I hear TFS as my default voices whenever I'm reading the manga.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Honestly, Super has conditioned me to think of the Japanese voices when I look at the characters. I kind of waver between Funi, TFS, and the Japanese voices on a consistent basis. I also was exposed to the Dragon Ball manga first, so my original vision of what the characters sound like isn't really any of the anime voices. I imagine them sounding like what I imagined them sounding like in my head, though obviously that's influenced by the anime voices nowadays.
So, for me it's kind of a mix of "all of them" and "none of them", in terms of which cast sounds "right".

I wish any of the English Gokus had a hick accent.
Like, not Texan, necessarily, but like. Some sorta mountain accent maybe? Hillbilly as in lives on a hill.
I cant actually listen to Masako Nozawa's Goku because my ears bleed, but I appreciate the impact and importance of her portrayal.

That's a thing apparently...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I appreciate Nozawa more than I "like" her, I guess.
Toriyama is quoted as saying that there was a point after the Dragon Ball anime made its debut and started running where he started writing Goku's lines in the manga with Nozawa's portrayal and voice in mind to deliver them.
Which means she's basically the "canon" Goku.
Her hick, country bumpkin accent definitely fits with being raised in Mt. Paozu.
...The problem is her voice is so screechy it physically hurts me. So I refuse to actually listen to it.

Masako Nozawa's voice is probably the furthest of the main three from what I envisioned, but I can't deny that she has the most objective talent as a voice actor of the three. Her lines where Goku is quiet and serious and her screams give me chills.
Actually, since the manga translated Goku as using a lot of cut-off words with apostrophes, my headcanon Goku voice actually does have a bit of a hick accent, and it sounds perfectly fine to me.
The entire Son clan having the accent is one thing, but I really dont like Goten, Gohan and especially Bardock having her voice.
Especially since Bardock isnt actually part of said Son clan, technically, so wouldnt have the accent.
If I had to think of a "Low-class Saiyan" accent. I dont know, it might be more like Cockney or Brooklyn or something. Something crass, improper but urban. The dredge of civilization, but still civilization and not the boonies.
Bardock and other Saiyans just having "proper" or "accentless" voices works too though.
...I like the idea of Vegeta taking up some of Freeza's speaking patterns almost by accident a lot.

I'm not going off the dubs anymore for that. Not even the anime. Just accents that make sense to me.
Even without Nozawa's performance, Goku having a hillbilly accent makes sense because it's basically what he literally is. Chichi's from Frypan Mountain, so her too.
Mountains and other geographic features that make travel and communication difficult between regions tend to lead to linguistic drift.

Goten, Gohan, and Bardock don't have the accent. Gohan speaks very properly and politely and Goten speaks politely, but also like a child. Goku and Chi-Chi have the same accent because they're both from the same area on Earth. It's definitely meant to be an Earth accent that Goku picked up from being raised in the middle of nowhere by Grandpa Gohan.
I can imagine Gohan having a "proper" hick accent?
Like. A Southern Belle, almost. Polite, and with proper grammar, but still sorta twangy. If that makes sense.
...Part of the point of Goten is that he's basically kid Goku 2.0, especially in Z, so Goten being different from Goku doesnt make sense to me.

Yeah, the Son children don't have any accent to speak of. Gohan has a very polite and professional voice, and Goten has a very polite but childish voice, neither of which carry the accent that both their parents have. I guess Chi-Chi was ashamed of her accent and raised them to not have one.
Keep in mind that, in Japanese culture, accents typically mean more than just location. The Osaka accent is taken to mean "farmer, hillbilly, and idiot" and dropping the accent is an indicator of intelligence and being a sophisticated member of society. Yes, it's bigoted.

The thing with Goku is that he was raised in the backwoods, sure, but he was raised solely by Grandpa Gohan, who lived in the woods alone, but was apparently traveled enough to be a renowned martial artist so he wasn't from there.
So Goku's accent would be derived entirely from Grandpa Gohan. And I have no idea what that is.

Right, again, I know that, I understand it, I just reject it. I reject that reality and substitute my own.
I appreciate and respect the Japanese Dub more than I like it.
Given how much of the "joke" of Goten in Z is how he's basically mostly the same as Goku was at that age only stronger, (like, technically Goten is more polite than Goku ever was, but also somehow dumber. Goku hit his head and got brain damage, I dunno what Goten's excuse is) I dont think him being different from Goku makes sense.
I'm also given to understand that Japanese accents aren't actually as different or have as much variation as English? Which makes sense, less linguistic drift.
I think in English there's more potential nuances, and the Son clan could explore that.
Goku having the most improper, hick, hillbilly sounding voice possible, while Gohan speaks more "proper" but still with a twang. Like a southern gentleman or southern belle, like the upper class or country academics or doctors or lawyers.
I always assumed Gohan was from around Paozu originally, and after training with Roshi he just sorta went home.
EDIT: I like Goku Black having a more "posh" accent, but I notice that Sean Schemmel's Goku seems to get more British the stronger he gets in Super, with Super Saiyan Blue and all that, and I really really dont like that.

Is Gotendo dumber? Well aside from also being younger in Z, nothing seems to lead to that.

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I recall someone posting a video where Nozawa seemlessly switches between her Goku, Gohan and Goten voices and you can hear the differences between them with frightening clarity.
It’s like I never realized how different they were until I heard them back to back.
One Strip! One Strip!I can notice how different they are after someone says that they ARE different.

Oh yeah.
I mean, Precure was essentially DBZ with Magical Girls so I can see them still being good because of that.
And hey. Kamen Rider and Super Sentai. Can't kill that train either.
