They dislike Gotendo more than Trunks...

Crazy rationale to be looked at.

And now he's back as the lead for a big-budget movie, apparently better than ever.

Even Kaiser's hyped for him.

Mr. Satan is a stage name only, so it wouldn't be Videl's surname.

The Son family is the only known existence of a surname in Dragon Ball.

For context, it's an animated series of their own creation called "Fist Master", not based on anything else.

The Son family is the only known existence of a surname in Dragon Ball.
Off the top of my head, there's also Tao Paipai (Tenshinhan just calls him "Paipai-san" at the Budokai) and it's heavily implied to be the case with Tenshinhan (Chaozu consistently calls him Ten-san, the announcer at the Budokai calls him Contestant Ten, and in the anime, Tenshinhan refers to his Four-Body Technique as a “Ten Style” move). There's also Mou Kekko. Plus the people at Penguin Village.

[up][up][up][up] I don't necessarily know if those really are surnames. Ten seems like a nickname, and both Tao Pai Pai and Tenshinhan wouldn't fit the name order unless 'Tao' and 'Ten' were the surnames (or Chinese has a different name order? not actually sure).

For something like Mo Kekkou, how do we know that the name is meant to be rendered in two parts? I can't tell that from the Japanese text.

Ten seems like a nickname
Highly doubt it. With Chaozu it could just be a cutesy nickname, but if so it'd be very odd for the tournament announcer to call him that.

"Paipai" definitely isn't just a nickname, since Tenshinhan adds that polite san on there and just generally acts very formal and respectful around him.

Ten seems like a nickname, and both Tao Pai Pai and Tenshinhan wouldn't fit the name order unless 'Tao' and 'Ten' were the surnames
That seems to be the case. So their given names would be Paipai and Shinhan.
For something like Mo Kekkou, how do we know that the name is meant to be rendered in two parts?
Jake Schutz translates it like that and I vaguely recall him listing Mou Kekko as having a surname.

Yeah I'm really doubting the Paipai and Shinhan as being given names. While that's a logical consequence of assuming they have two names, Schutz wasn't convinced of that either.

It could also be possible that name order is different in the region they're from. The use of surnames varies, with Satan and Videl coming from a region where they're less coming and it being more common in the East (hence Son Gohan).

I still don't know how Schutz determined that Mou Kekko is a surname and can't find anything on the matter, but I'll take his word on it since he is.

Chinese names, like Japanese ones, have their surnames first. So having Tao or Ten being their surnames isn't weird at all.

Speaking of names, i wonder if Android 18 will be referred by her real name, Lazuli, or just her number.

Well, when you come up with a reason for anyone, including 18, to remember/know they even have real names, they probsly will.

[up][up][up] No. Some people took 'Briefs' as her family name from Dr. Brief, but she's just listed in the police registry as Bulma and no-one in West City is shown with a surname.

Which makes it most likely that Brief is Dr. Brief's only name.

I think the making it up was a joke about 16 being modelled after Gero's son. Of course, he could also mean the same about 17 and 18's real names. That and also being a jab at Toriyama making things up as he goes.

Also, considering that Krillin in abridged is Hispanic and his surname being "Sanchez", it would be very funny if 18 married name would be Lazuli Sanchez.

Hey, you know how Shenron couldn't, or wouldn't, revive 16? What about Arale? She's a robot too. And she would have been on Earth when it blew up. Assuming the human extinction attack didn't get her.

Arale is a joke, so I'm assuming she was exempt for some reason.
