It's the same issue as the original, from a different angle.
So it doesn't really matter.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I mean, 16 was right on the money with the line "you think you're better than everyone else". Gohan has been acting like a bit of a shit for this arc. He's only 11 and he acts like he's smarter and more logical than everyone else. Also, there have been points where Gohan was visibly frustrated with everyone else for fighting and exasperated that of course everything devolves into violence.
No. No he is not.
Though his hatred of his dad got really crazy in this arc, and it was already growing back in the Frieza Arc.
One Strip! One Strip!Got crazy? It was getting better.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I feel like since they explicitly had Goku do this to prepare Gohan for possible future dangers after he's gone, the whole "Gohan doesn't like fighting!" realization shouldn't even matter.
Like, who gives a shit if he gets excited about it like Goku does if the literal fate of the world is at stake?
And that's kind of always been there even in the original, but I feel like this exasperates it.

That's Piccolo's rationalization, who in canon and in Abridged is an overprotective dad in contrast to Goku.
Goku's right that Earth needs a protector other than him. Piccolo is right that forcing an eleven year old to fight a soul eating chimera with the fate of the Earth at stake while his dad stands on the sideline watching him getting punched in the face is also maybe a bad idea.
The problem is that they added "Gohan is an egotist" on top of the natural conflict existing in canon that Gohan fears his anger and his need to overcome that.

I feel like the point, mainly in this version, is that Goku never bothered to see if Gohan was actually ok with being his successor and just kind of thrusted him into the role. Had Goku talked about it with Gohan beforehand, I'm pretty sure Gohan wouldn't be so adverse to fighting Cell here.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Piccoro's an over protective daddy in canon?
I'd like to see that.
If only it were true.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. You have indeed been taken by those things.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. He's really not doting either.
He has a softer spot for Gohan than he does most other people, but the two of them really didn't spend a lot of time together outside of crisis and fighting, and for a lot of that Goku was there too.
That is, until Super, but Super has no problem going with fan interpretations of things, outside of what was actually shown.

From the Buu saga
Goku: Sure thing. If I know my son what he'll regret most about losing to Buu is not being able to see you anymore. You know, Gohan always looked up to you. Thought the world of you.

Well he only starts calling himself a pacifist when Cell calls him out.
So it comes across as more an excuse to justify himself than something he actually is.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
