...So I was just checking the Z series Character page on This Very Wiki...
Wait? That reporter's name is actually Jimmy Firecracker!? I thought the Abridged crew just came up with that!
One Strip! One Strip! It just...I assumed Toriyama just wouldn't bother to name him, as he is wont to do with characters, some attacks that are just generic ki blasts, and entire races if Frieza is anything to go by.
I mean, he names this dude, but not the Budokai announcer, who's been around for way longer? We went years not knowing the name of Bulma's mom until recently (come to think of it, when the hell did we find out she was named Panchy?) and there's a whole lot of other shit that gets casually hand waved as unimportant despite being pretty impactful to the franchise, but this bum fuck jackass who shows up for a few episodes of one arc is somehow worthy of not only a name, but a full name (when only the Son family and their various offspring get such)?
It's a little baffling.
One Strip! One Strip!Panchy was named in a 2004 interview in Dragon Ball Forever.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Toriyama is such a Scapegoat Creator for this series, it's insane. It doesn't help that there's so much misinformation regarding what he's said.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Eh either we blame him or we blame Toei.
I never pegged him as a Scapegoat Creator. True, I give him a lot of shit, but that's because of massive Opinion Myopia that has me convinced my ideas are better.
One day, I'll eat those words. I hope they tasted good.
Then again, there are all the rumours about him doing this and doing that (forgetting characters, changing things because the audience wanted him too, shit like that ), so I could believe that he might sometimes take some undeserved flak.
One Strip! One Strip!Define "blatantly English" because a large number of characters have names in English.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!As far as we know, Toriyama didn't script the Funi dub.

Well, setting aside the canon names from English words, Funi added a lot of English/western names to characters who weren't named in the original. So no, he isn't the only one.

Bah. I should have known.
Well, done with this topic I guess. On to the next one.
One Strip! One Strip!Names that are explicitly English given or surnames, and not individual words picked as part of Theme Naming.
Or in other words, culturally English/American/Etc names. Rather than names that are simply based on words that are linguistically English.

On that topic of theme names, what is the theme for Namekian's? I find it hard to believe that there woudn't be one given pretty much everyone has one, but between Picollo, Dende, Nail, and Guru (?), I can't see a running theme.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=13239183440B34964700 Alfric's Fire Emblem Liveblog Encyclopedia!Dende = denden-mushi, which is another Japanese word for "snail".
Nail = Snail
namek = namekuji which means "slug".
Elder Moori & Katta (Kami's dad) = kattatsumuuri, a Japanese word for "snail"
All of King Piccolo's "children" are Musical instruments: Tambourine, Cymbal, Drum & Piano (And Piccolo Junior, Obviously)

Ooooooh, alright that makes sense. That's what I get for not watching Dragon Ball while trying to figure this out.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=13239183440B34964700 Alfric's Fire Emblem Liveblog Encyclopedia! So I've been rewatching the series at work - well, "watching" is a generous term; I'm playing the audio while working - and I noticed something. The Princess Trunks gag from the Broly movie was the payoff to a lot of "Trunks is effeminate" gags that actually started with Goku, when he remarked, "What a nice young lady," as Trunks departed their first meeting.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. Both him and Veggie agree that "Trunks" is a girl's name...apparently.
