Dude just dropped Yamcha for the announcer. Some Yamcha fan he is.

I'm pretty sure Yamucha isn't a tertiary character...

But I don't think there's a name for characters less important than tertiaries.

seriously, at the 23rd, Piccolo obliterated the entire surface of Papaya Island, killing almost everyone there, and the announcer kept doing this job

  • "Dude, this is way beyond normal. Everything is dead, and they're blowing up the entire island. Just get out of there already!"
  • "Bitch, no! I'm a professional, damnit!"

I wonder if Goku and co being portrayed as wife beating assholes will play into why the public is way more able to buy Mr. Satan as the hero of the Cell Games?

I mean, Goku being a hillbilly isn't even wrong. That's just facts.

I mean, in the Japanese version, the way he talks is specifically supposed to invoke ideas of a stereotypical rural hick. Not something that translates to English without seeming really forced and out of place, though.

[up] I was wondering why Goku's subtitles always leave the "g"s off of words that end with that letter ("doin'," "somethin'," etc.).

I think that's also why Chi-Chi calls him Goku-sa not -san.

I also remember MasakoX saying that he purposefully slurs his words when he does his Goku voice, while he tries to enunciate more when he does Gohan.

Goku and Chi-Chi have hick accents, Goten and Gohan don't.

I like the detail of Gohan using the original japanese names for everyone. It's a cute way of showing how "proper" he is.

I've noticed the slur. Masako's Goku has a sort of a lisp kind of thing when he talks.

It doesn't quite capture the country vibe that Goku's supposed to have, instead being more of a generic simpleton accent.

Well that's more or less how they portray Goku anyway, so it fits for their interpretation.

I notice every voice Goku has had, or at least the most popular ones, brings it's own distinction to his general personality.

Masako is more along the lines of a childish hick like most have described. Sean sounds more traditionally heroic while still making him sound innocent. And DBZA as described just makes him an all out simpleton.

Yeah Goku and Chi Chi speak a form of Tohoku Regional Accent, its not extreme to the point it needs subtitles for Japanese speakers but its there. Chi Chi's was rather pronounced in her appearances before the tournament.

The biggest sign that we can pick up is they both use "Ora" instead of "Boku" or "Watashi".

What would be the most accurate translation of the hick accent? Something akin to Android 13?

unnoun Since: Jan, 2012
#27998: Jun 27th 2017 at 7:02:44 PM

I mean, yeah, basically.

The fact that Android 13 calls Goku a city boy in the English dub is just. One of the most wrong things.

Like, just by definition. Goku has probably not spend more than a week in any given city in his life.

Are the tournaments inside cities? They always looked rather rural.

Heck IIRC isn't the tournament's backstory how it's held in a temple coz it used to be a ceremonial religious thing in the past? (Also why the staff are dressed like monks)
