I wonder what the people in here who think Roshi is some serial predator would make of Happosai.
I only read the first few volumes of Ranma but it's all so absurd that I didn't care. And the best characters were the dads because they were the funniest. "JUST A LOVABLE PANDA!"

I see your point. I recently rewatched IY and I can easily understand how Miroku, Sango and Shippo always backing Kagome's feelings can get frustrating. And you're right, there is a lot more going on than "guy is hung up over his ex." But, well, I've been told "true literature" is when the fantasy reflects reality. It's not about the orcs and magic, it's about making the orcs and magic mean something to the real world. LOTR isn't great because of wizards and talking trees, it's great because those things stand for something we can understand in our lives. I bring this up because I think Kagome and Inuyasha re clearly meant to appeal to real people ya know? So even though they are in fantastical situations, they're supposed to be viewed or comprehended as a "real" couple.
notsure if I'm making sense....

Absolutely.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The fact that they are horrible people is what makes them all perfect for each other, pretty much like Kono Suba.
The fact that there are actually decent people in the Ranma crew though is the stickler. Manga Akane is actually not a bad person at all, just a reflexive Tsundere.
Also like Love Hina the actual violence in Ranma was cranked up in the anime, especially the early chapters. Also it suffered from massive Flanderization overtime and changes from the manga to anime.

There are some anime I've seen, like Fushigi Yuugi, that just lapse into Super Deformed stuff for comedy scenes and we're obviously not supposed to think the heroes actually look or act like that. It's just a gag.
You compartmentalize the gag scenes off in one area and the real drama stuff off in another. I really don't get why this is so hard for people. Do Kagome and Inuyasha need to magically become 1 foot tall with huge faces to represent scenes you're not supposed to give more thought?
Because the comedy stuff has bearings in the plot? It's not like Kagome loses the ability to force Inu Yasha to sit down so hard it causes a fucking crater (and is noticeably unpleasant to him) outside of joke scenes. It doesn't change the fact that their entire relationship is based on "Do as I say or otherwise I will physically hurt you for whatever petty whim or perceived slight crosses my mind"
(And before anyone goes "But it doesn't REALLY hurt him", realise that's like saying it's okay punch your wife if she gets right back up after)

Or maybe instead they should not play abusive for laughs and also expect the relationship to be taken seriously.
I don't get the sentiment of "don't count gags" because that's where a lot of these issues come from to begin with. Roshi for example does the majority of his awful behaviour in gags. That you're not meant to take it seriously is part of the problem!
A relationship isn't healthy if you aren't walloping the guy over the head at least once every other week.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!It mostly comes down to where you draw the line. A lot of humor with those types of characters is that their behavior would not be tolerated in real life, so it creates a cognitive dissonance.
You know they're terrible people, but because you understand it's fiction you're able to laugh it off.
Whether that's a good thing or not is up to you, but that type of humor seems to be falling out of favor due to political climate changing in the world.

Violence is not sex. I'm frankly astonished people whine about Kagome doing the equivalent of bonking Inuyasha on the head (dude gets hands punched through him and survives being hit by his super attack that destroys mountains. He can take a "Sit") when Miroku is right there groping women and that's treated as a joke. Although in his defense I don't recall him doing it to anyone besides Kagome and Sango and he and Sango end up together. Still wrong, though. Although it leads to one of the funnier moments in the series.
But I'm rambling. My point is, gag scenes are obviously not to be taken seriously because they're just random and meaningless. Since we're in a DBZ thread, let's look at one of the more infamous filler gag scenes. KRILLIN SERIOUSLY INJURED GOKU WITH THAT ROCK! AN UNPROVOKED ATTACK UPON HIS SLEEPING BEST FRIEND, WHAT A MONSTER!!!
Or you just chuckle at the fact Super Saiyan got hurt by a pebble and move the fuck on because it means nothing.

I have no idea what you're talking about. No such scene exists.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! That's not what I said. I was merely voicing confusing at a non-issue causing all this while there's a real issue right there that everyone who knows even a little about IY is aware of.
I mainly brought it up to contrast types of gags, anyway.
You might remember this whole conversation started talking about shounen with good depictions of women. If I were going to criticize IY's treatment of women, I'd start with Miroku, not Kagome.

It could be as simple as us not thinking that love interests hitting each other is very funny.

Oh God! Natural light!

In my experience, series of that nature aren't supposed to be watched because you like any of the characters.
