[up] Probably not much different. Dragon Ball's anime came out at the time where the mentality in the Anime Industry was to keep the money train rolling, even if it means padding the shit out of it with filler.

Yea, blaming all of the Anime's shortcomings on Toei seems like scapegoating.

If I swear while attacking Toei, do I have to add two dollars to it? 'Cause seriously, f*ck Toei.

But no, I agree that not all of the anime's shortcomings are their fault. They cocked up in how they padded and filled out the series, but the existence of padding and filler is a problem that crosses the entire medium. It happens because Japan insists on adapting mangas that are still being written when the anime is produced.

Dragon Ball is just one of a million anime where they overtook the manga and then had to stall for time while more chapters were being written. It's just more noticeable in Dragon Ball than it often is, because it goes for these huge, long battles against a single foe, which means often times they have to stall for time while the characters are still fighting.

Shit like Captain Ginyu possessing Bulma and the humans fighting the Ginyu Force happened because good god, Goku and Frieza are still punching each other and yet there is a compelling need for a filler arc right now.

Look, we have... had... enough in that one jar to fund the entire TV Tropes staff for a year. After taxes.

But then the jar was stolen. And the company selling those infinite storage jars went out of business. So nuts to that.

[up][up]Yeah it's only really been in the past half decade or so where Studios (and other parties involved) finally came around to adapting to more "seasonal" formats when it comes to adapting anime from manga.

But Attack on Titan, A Certain Magical Index, Haruhi, Highschool of the Dead, and My Hero Academia...

My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan both were released in the last half decade. And High School of the Dead ltierally ran out of material to adapt. tongue

Looking at Mal admittedly, it was probably Hajime no Ippo's production that first started the shift.

The author of High School Of The Dead died just yesterday. And Haruhi's author stopped writing and there isnt really enough material to adapt, even stretching it the arc does not finish in any way.

Raildex stuff is isnt targeted at the same demographic as continual Shōnen shows as well.

But studios are still doing the whole filler hell and stretch the series at least a full year or more, Sousei No Onmyouji is a stellar example of it, sadly, done by Studio Pierrot the guys who do Naruto and Bleach.

Pretty sure Zel was blaming Toei for specific Toeisms, it's not like they're innocent just because filler was unavoidable - that doesn't mean garbage filler is unavoidable.

Fuck Toei.

You say that as if other anime not made by Toei doesn't have garbage filler; just look at stuff like Naruto and Bleach. Plus, you get the anime that end up going onto a different path than the original manga, like what the Rosario + Vampire anime did.

How we got here:

It's a comedy attack. Comedy attacks work differently than serious attacks.

You mean like Launch being able to hurt Goku with Bullets when he's already tanked a handgun to the face back when he first met Bulma?

Yeah, and what about the time he got hurt in his SSJ form when Krillin hit him in the nose with a rock, when he was able to completely No Sell a friggin' death beam from Frieza in that same form?

Fuck Toei.

I wonder what the Dragon Ball anime would have been like if a studio that wasn't a pile of garbage got their hands on it

Sometimes you need a little light-hearted nonsense. I see no problem with the Krillin throwing a rock gag, or Launch shooting Goku. Seriously, lighten up, no one's using either of these scenes for power level discussion. No need to jump into full-swing "burn all filler" mode like that.

Except One Piece and Bleach Filler, but that's for another thread.

Wasn't the Lunch thing in the manga anyway? Toei had nothing to do with that one.

Given Toriyama supposedly being obsessed with gags I wouldn't doubt it.

Well, as others mentioned, the Launch thing was in the manga. I honestly don't care about some filler if it doesn't actually affect anything, so the Krillin rock thing is water under the bridge to me as well, manga only or not.

I mean, did hitting Goku with that rock affect anything either way? Nope.

As for other filler, if it has doesn't contradict anything, then it's fine as well.

Perhaps, Toriyama should have written all the filler himself so that nothing went against what he'd already set up.

Well he was working very hard on a manga at the time. That probably wasn't possible. It's not like some small contradictions are the end of the world anyway.

How long have you been on the internet to even ask that?

Small contradictions are sins of the highest calibre.

Every single forum on earth has taught me that.

Any way, we are we declaring war on Toei? I'm busy Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays for the next ten years.tongue

No... I say that as if filler doesn't inherently have to be bad. I'm not saying another company definitely would have done better, just that Toei don't get a pass for the crap they put out.

edit: Lunch hurting Goku with bullets in the manga came before his training, and he didn't bleed - it's consistent with Bulma's handgun hurting Goku when it struck his head.
