Sega of America and Sega of Japan are the same company just different branchs.

[up] Yes, but last I checked, due to differences in American and Japanese copyright law, the American and Japanese branches each own some properties that aren't legally shared with each other.

Remember how Archie Comics was in a lawsuit with Scott Fulop?

Turns out Archie won!

Archie wins. Every single claim and request by Fulop was essentially dismissed.

  • [U.S. District Judge Vincent L.] Briccetti dismissed the copyright infringement and unfair competition claims, citing a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that it is not improper to reproduce an author’s ideas without proper attribution.
  • The judge dismissed the deceptive business practices claim because Narrative Ark provided insufficient evidence of how Archie Comic Publications had harmed consumers. Briccetti dismissed the unjust enrichment allegation under New York law because copyright law preempts claims under state law for matters covered by the federal law.
  • He dismissed the claims against Sega because the licensing agreement was not enough to establish jurisdiction in New York.
  • Fulop wanted to add two Archie Comic co-owners to the lawsuit, Nancy Silberkleit and Jonathan Goldwater. Briccetti denied the request, finding that the basis for adding them was “threadbare.”

In other words:

  • SEGA is in the clear and they don't have to worry about anymore losses.
  • Archie is in the offensive rather than the defensive, so it's one less thing to worry about.

Archie also issued a counter-claim for slander that not only hasn't been dismissed, but it looks like they'll win it:

  • Fulop also is asking the court to declare that Archie Comic Publications’ original copyright registrations are invalid. And he asked the court to dismiss the publisher’s counterclaim that Fulop slandered Archie by casting doubt on the validity of its ownership of the works.
  • Briccetti rejected Fulop’s slander motion, for now, because if Archie Comic Publications can establish that it is the owner of the copyrights that Narrative Ark claims to own, then Archie will have established an element of slander.

And yes, Archie can, in fact, establish that. In theory, they can even prove irreparable harm and/or damages against Fulop. Why? Because Archie lost the Sonic license.

So, which of the unfinished storylines bother you the most? Me, I wish we knew what was that treasure from last pirate arc, and I would like to know what's Maw's deal is, especially his odd power.

Yeah, but it was probably going to be elaborated on. Also, I could swear I could see tiny objects after his attack, so I thought his power is based on Magic Hand from SA 2.

So apparently, Penders has discussed his plans for the comic in the event he had never left the book, and supposedly, the goal was to have Bunnie and Antione married in the 200th issue before rebooting the entire fucking universe. Years before Worlds Collide was even so much as a twinkle in Ian Flynn's eyes. Now, it's hard to tell how much of this is actually true and how much of this is 'No guys, I was totally gonna do it first, seriously!", but can you imagine what a rebooted Sonic-verse would look like under Penders' thumb?

I can see it now: Sonic himself would be nothing more than a footnote, a Tagalong Kid playing the role of Tails to the real hero, Knuckles the Super-Echidna. There would also be no game characters whatsoever aside from Sonic, Knuckles, and the Chaotix, with the focus instead being on Knuckles, the Freedom Fighters, and any and all other characters created purely by Penders. It would also have absolutely nothing to do with the games. Instead, Robotnik would simply be an old evil defeated ages ago, with the real Big Bad from the getgo being Dimitri and his Dark Legion. The whole setting would also be bleak and lifeless, a bland, colorless wasteland composed of nothing but empty corridors and old Star Wars tropes. And everyone — EVERYONE — would be one-note caricatures drawn and written though as they were being illustrated and given dialogue by a kindergartener. Except even something by an actual kindergartener would be more compelling than whatever Penders could come up with.

And I'm betting even that wouldn't be as terribad as whatever Penders would actually do.

I read about the Ant and Bunnie wedding in 200, but most of the stuff he and Karl Bollers planned was for the next batch of stories up to 175-ish.

Karl originally wanted to reintroduce the Iron Queen and have her brainwash Knuckles, and she'd get in a 4-way-war over a Master Geode which I guess acted like a big honkin' Chaos Emerald, have Antoine be brainwashed by the Source of All and become a villain, introduce Metal series of Sonic's friends, including Metal Amy and the Tails Doll, and ship Sonic/Fiona and Sonic/Amy, leaning towards the latter.

Ken's plans included Uncle Chuck and Rosie dating, Snively turning good and dying a hero's death, nanotechnology helping Jules look more Mobian even though he wasn't, Ant and Bunnie's wedding being set up in 175 and marrying later on, and the FF going to Station Square as embassies, where they'd get into conflict with Evil Sonic, Rouge, and Knuckles. He intended to re-ship Sonic and Sally gradually by having them overcome the fallout from the Slap XD;

[up]Karl's stuff sounds... okay, but most of Pender's stuff just sounds awful. Snively turning good? Seriously? I'm not saying no-one's incapable of redemption, but turning someone like Snively would take a LOT of time and a LOT of effort as well as just some damn good writing, and I'm not sure Penders would really be up to the task. Besides, Snively's at his best when he's a backstabbing SOB, and having him turn good would kind of be contradictory to that. Even when he was working with GUN Postboot, he was still planning on biting them in the ass sooner or later.

About the supposed reboot, he only revealed that recently. Penders said that he only talked about it now due to IDW now having the license. It is becoming more and more looking like he does not plan anything at all.

[up]This I know. That doesn't mean it isn't fun (or horrifying,) to speculate on just what a Pendersian reboot would be, would it?

Can we cool it with the Penders-bashing? It's been getting old since before the lawsuits.

Also, I found something new to discuss! LHT's site updated witha big post.

http://bumbleking.com/lost-hedgehog-tales-update/

"With recent events I’m getting a fair number of folks asking about the timetable for “Lost Hedgehog Tales.” The short answer is: no time soon. Now that you’re good and mad/disappointed, the long answer:

  1. – Legal Concerns: Many folks have been kind enough to point out that the most recent publicly known legal matter has ended with the case thrown out. That’s true, but there’s also the possibility the plaintiff will appeal the decision, starting the mess all over again. I’m in no position to ask about it, so for now it’s a waiting game to see if that storm has actually passed.

  2. – IDW: The Sonic license moving to IDW is very cool, but it brings up a ton of new questions. IDW is famous for bringing back and completing older runs of fan-favorite franchise books when they can. Does this mean I can maybe one day finish my post-reboot plans? Does it mean I might one day finish my pre-reboot plans? I have no ideas. But the possibility, even if it’s infinitesimally small, now exists. And it’s entirely too early to predict whether or not it might happen. “Lost Hedgehog Tales” could, potentially, derail that. And if sitting on the project now means we actually get to see it as a comic later? I think it’s totally worth waiting a few more years. And if not? If it just takes a while to make sure those will never happen and I’m in the clear? Then so be it.

  3. – Other Stuff: There’s other things floating around in the background that I can’t talk about. Some of it I’m not even fully aware of since I’m just the writer; a small part of a much bigger mechanism. But there are other potential pitfalls and issues that make me wary of getting into “Lost Hedgehog Tales” right now.

I understand that this is frustrating for a lot of people. It’s frustrating for me too. When I announced the project, I thought it would be a simple kind gesture and we could all move on. But nothing in life is simple. Once again I appreciate everyone’s patience with this. It will happen. I just don’t have a lot of control over when."

So apparently, Adam Bryce Thomas has released his pencils of Sonic Universe #95 and #96 as well as rough pencils of #97 onto the internet for all to see. We've also got plot summaries for 95 and 96 here and here, and pairing them with the pencils helps give you a decent idea of what's going on. In any case, it's great stuff, and it makes me wish Archie would have just finished them up and released them before calling it quits. We would've even gotten some new villains out of it! But them's the breaks.sad

EDIT: or maybe Void from Sonic Shuffle, cause Null and Void. XD

I get more of Mephiles vibe.

On a semi-related note, while it's neither Archie or IDW, Flynn and Thomas are doing for Sega new free online comics to promote Sonic Forces. First two parts are here and here and two more should arrive soon.

If IDW is doing Sonic do you think they'll continue Archie's Mega Man? It's been on "indefinite hiatus" for 2 years and counting, and part of the reason the main Sonic comic and Sonic Universe went under was due to Archie's finances and putting more focus on their own properties.

[up] Wait, but isn't their upcoming Mega Man Mastermix series just an official re-release of a 10 year old manga, now in color?

I'm not sure if that constitutes as a "brand-new-series-that-totally-cans-the-Mega-Man-series-by-Archie-in terms-of-newness."

(In any case, unless the situation changes, I'll join you in the "RIP Tempo" business.)

Oy. So, I can't link this just now, but apparently, Penders is including an issue of Archie Sonic(specifically something from 25YL,) with the Lara Sue Chronicles. And it's got Knuckles in it. It's not even a cameo, he's front and center. Is... Is that even legal? Because I'm pretty sure this is blatant copyright infringement here.

We can worry about it once he gets close to actually publishing his book - and I think by that time, fighting Skynet will keep us too busy to think about that.

[up] So, to be clear, this online comic shows what might've happened during the whole "Mecha Sally" arc if the Archie Sonic universe didn't have its first crossover with Mega Man?

kkhohoho (4 Score & 7 Years Ago)

[up]Partly. Once that's done though, it's going to do it's own thing.

Anyway, I just read it, and... it's pretty good! It's on par with STCO, which isn't a bad thing. As far as I'm concerned, Archie's back.
