One Piece: Monkey D. Luffy:

Before - While this applies to most of the crew, Luffy is special because he quickly becomes a legendary pirate, his bounty quickly increases until, by the events of Marineford, he earns a bounty of 400,000,000 berry. After the Time Skip, he's considered by the general public one of the frontrunners for becoming Pirate King and captain of one of the strongest crews on the Grand Line; later, after escaping from an Emperor's territory, he earns a 1,500,000,000 berry bounty and is considered on the same level as an Emperor by the general public (despite the other Emperors disagreeing with his status).

After Edit- While this applies to most of the crew, Luffy is unique because he quickly becomes a legendary pirate, his bounty quickly increases until, by the events of the Post-Marineford, he earns a bounty of 400,000,000 berri. After the Time Skip, he's considered by the general public one of the frontrunners for becoming Pirate King and captain of one of the strongest crews on the Grand Line; later, after escaping from an Emperor's territory (Big Mom), he earns a 1,500,000,000 berri bounty and is considered on the same level as an Emperor by the general public (despite the other Emperors disagreeing with his status) before doubling that bounty and officially being named an Emperor of the Sea himself by defeating Kaido during the Raid of Onigashima shortly afterward.

For YMMV.The Devil Wears Prada (Base-Breaking Character tree):

  • Nate used to be a straight up scrappy when the film first released, due to many finding him dull, along with him being in a relationship with Andy getting popular ships but in more recent years he has developed a lot of vocal defenders. The main sticking point that causes flame wars is his treatment of Andy's job. His detracters point out that he constantly insults her job and her boss, encouraging her to quick when this is the only way to get her dream job, but his supports will often point out that Andy clearly hates the job, he is absolutely right that Miranda is a horrible boss, and that the job is indeed changing Andy.

Any corrections?

@ The Island at the Top of the World

  • Cult Classic: The film only made a small profit and is rarely hyped up by Disney today, but the dynamics between the cast and powerful cinematography and effects, as well as how its plot and tone are more adventurous than many Disney movies of the era, make it stand out to some fans.
  • The Scrappy: The Team Pet poodle isn't liked that much by most people, who view her as an overly Disney element in a film that otherwise tries not to seem too much like typical Disney fare.

@ Doctor Syn ("The Scarecrow")

  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The Cult Classic status of the miniseries, the large amount of demand for home media copies, and the fact that (as of 2023) it isn't on any streaming services cause this to be a film that some fans seek out through other means even in comparison to other Disney flicks.
@ Doctor Syn ("The Scarecrow")
  • Adaptation Displacement: Syn's lieutenants don't have bird and skull masks of their own in the books, but the way they do have such masks in this version has stuck with the fandom.
  • Improved by the Re-Cut: The condensed British movie version is often regarded as being better than the miniseries and American movie version due to cutting out a Romantic Plot Tumor and a lot of long conversations between secondary characters while leaving in a comprehensible story plot and all the chases and spooky scenes.

Species: Human

Homeworld: Alderaan

The eldest of three Alderaanian brothers living on Delaya in the second Rebel Force book.
  • Informed Ability: He is described as someone who is always able to charm anyone but comes off as gruff or nervous in many of his scenes. This may be justified by how 1) the loss of his parents and homeworld has changed his personality, and 2) the person who makes that claim is one of his adoring but not necessarily accurate younger brothers.
  • Serendipitous Survival: He and his brothers survive the destruction of Alderaan because they'd convinced their parents to let them go to a sports tournament on Alderaan's neighboring planet Delaya and were just about to head home when the Death Star blew Alderaan up (although many Alderaanians on Delaya survived under similar circumstances).
  • Troubled Teen: He is an orphaned and homeless fifteen-year-old who is introduced trying to mug the Heroes of Yavin at knifepoint, but he is more angry and scared than really nasty.

@ Descendants

  • Doug quickly zeroes in on why the claim that Evie, Carlos, Jay, and Ben are going camping is suspicious (although he still ends up buying it): that story requires him to believe that Evie would go anywhere she can't plug in a hairdryer.

  • In "The Face in the Mirror":
    • Dr. Monash making a telegraph device out of a battery and a bike and sending a morse code S.O.S.
    • Kurdy escapes from an ambush where Sims is after him, Jeremiah, and the defector in their truck by rendezvousing with about twenty other scouts in identical trucks and then having different convoys of three cars drive in different directions so Sims doesn't know who to chase.

@ Jeremiah
  • Sims's first reaction to seeing the wanted poster Thunder Mountain made of him in "Running on Empty" is to say he thinks he's more handsome and ask if it got his good side. His snarky main goon asks which side that is supposed to be.
  • In "The Question", one of the New Meat soldiers says that he is sure whoever Markus has training them is the best of the best. The scene cuts to Kurdy nervously stepping in front of a mirror and practicing a Cliché Storm of stock phrases from Boot Camp Episodes.

@ Jeremiah

  • In "The Question", the miracles Markus and Kurdy want to wish for are pretty heartwarming. Markus wants to see Meghan resurrected and uninfected and Kurdy wants to wish away every weapon in the world besides what is needed for sustenance hunting, in order to stop the upcoming war and preserve the lives of the soldiers he has been training and everyone else.

~Tropers/Clare ~Tropers/Arivne I am preparing to add some content in Genshin Impact: Character Stories—Inazuma.

Imperatrix Umbrosa (Ei/Beelzebul, Raiden Shogun)

Act II: Transient Dreams

Released: v2.5 "When the Sakura Bloom" (February 16, 2022)
Minimum Adventure Rank: 40

Arriving at Adventurers' Guild Inazuma branch, Katheryne greets the Traveler and Paimon, telling them that the Yashiro Commission has placed out a request to help defending the Sacred Sakura from aggressive rifthounds. The Traveler accepts the commission and Paimon remarks on how the rifthounds are trying to defile Hanachirusato's legacy.

Upon their reaching the spot, two Thundercraven Rifthound Whelps encroach on the Traveler, Ei appears and eliminates them. They remind her of the Cataclysm 500 years ago, and the Traveler recognizes this is due to the collapse of Khaenri'ah.

Along with the Traveler tracking them down to some gnawed roots, Ei inspects them and states that the Yashiro Commission are more than capable to nurse it back to health. The mysterious sap begins to glow and a recollection of some of the incident 500 years ago manifests. Kitamura, a samurai spawned from the manifestation, informs the Traveler about the rifthounds and advises them to flee, stating that both the Shogun and Kitsune Saiguu are gone. Much to Kitamura's relief, Ei joins in and tells him of Inazuma at peace.

Tracking more monsters in Araumi, Ei dispatches them easily. Just then, one of the roots glows again, manifesting her entourage Furuyama. Ei introduces him to the Traveler, telling that he specializes in tea. Surprised to see the Shogun return so soon, Furuyama states regretlessly that he is satisfied with life, as all good things must come to an end. As he seeks his tea set to serve tea to the pair, the Traveler offers to get him one at the Kamisato Estate, where Hirano is surprised to see the Shogun arrive. As Hirano fetches the tea set, Ei speaks with the Traveler, telling her that Furuyama's views actually came from her sister, Makoto, although she suspected that he pretended not to know the difference of two Shoguns. Hirano then returns with the tea set and they return to Furuyama.

By the time they returned, Furuyama disappeares. Brewing tea, Ei reveals that Makoto has inexplicably been to Khaenri'ah without informing her. By the time Ei realized the truth, Makoto had been unconscious and died, but Ei was able to preserve her conscience and returned to Inazuma. Therein, she noticed the Sacred Sakura rising, but others told her it had already existed. She believes that Makoto's remnants spawned the tree, but nonetheless exhausted its powers against the monsters ravaging Inazuma. Answering whether the Traveler's sibling had participated in the event, she states that she arrived too late to know, for preoccupation with Inazuma's safety simultaneously.

Continuing to track the mysterious residue, they eventually arrive at a cave where the roots glow and spawn three samurai, who notice the Shogun and fight off the rifthounds with the Traveler's help. After killing the monsters, the samurais remark on how the Shogun has given them hope before they fade away. Though they are simply fettered memories of a time long past, she realizes having neglected her archon duties and promises to uphold their trust. As they leave, Ei suddenly freezes. The Traveler checks up on her, and tells them that they need to bring her underneath the Grand Narukami Shrine as the puppet Shogun is calling her for her final battleground, one where she would cut her past and look towards the future.

Arriving at the cave underneath the Grand Narukami Shrine, Ei opens up a torii gate, sucking the three into Makoto's consciousness. She then reveals the puppet Shogun is the one trying to reject her commands as it now sees her as an enemy of eternity. After a short duel, Ei states that she is to demonstrate to the Shogun that she has not succumbed to it, with the Traveler witnessing. She then expels it from the realm, telling them to inform Miko to govern Inazuma in her stead.

After being kicked out, Paimon wonders what they can do when the Traveler reminds her they needed to inform Miko, so they decide to go pay a visit to her.

Learning of the situation from the Traveler, the three return to the torii gate. Miko manages to reactivate it and informs the Traveler she can send them to a rough location of where Ei may be, but reminds them to remain focused or they could be potentially dropped off elsewhere. They return to the plane where Ei is surprised to see them so quickly without any change, as centuries had passed inside. The Shogun, impressed with Ei's abilities and the Traveler's return, proclaims that they will have their final duel.

Ei manages to defeat the Shogun, who finally acknowledges that she is not suffering from erosion and allows her to remain in control. Ei admits to the Shogun that she would have lost were it not for her new perspectives before offering it to become her kagemusha for the present, which it accepts. The Shogun is also left impressed with the battle and looks forward to the rematch in the future. Just then, the Musou Isshin begins to glow and spawn a fragment of Makoto's consciousness, which she had placed in the sword and would only be evoked when Ei drew out its full power. She gives her a seed which Ei plants and turns into the Sacred Sakura.

Returning to the current timeline, Miko learns of the entire situation inside the plane. Deciding to investigate the current state of Inazuma, Ei abolishes the Sakoku Decree (Country Lockdown Decree), thanking everyone for their support.

^ The phrase "has one" is a Zero-Context Example as it doesn't make it clear what "one" is or how it is used in the work. Even with context, it becomes Word Cruft of the "this example is an example" variety. Therefore, I've changed "one" to "an unspoken plan".

For Unintentionally Unsympathetic/Pokemon

  • Anime
    • Kenny is meant to be seen as a guy who secretly loves and admires Dawn despite his teasing. Many fans however feel that Kenny's Loving Bully tendencies lean far too much into the bullying angle to be seen as genuine affection. This perception is caused by how often Kenny embarrasses Dawn by sharing embarrassing stories from their youth, or by constantly referring to Dawn as "Dee Dee", a nickname Dawn has made clear she hates. Compounding the issue, Kenny's final appearance has him try to force an ultimatum on Dawn by making a bet with Ash that states Dawn has to travel with him instead if he beats Ash in a Pokémon battle, something that screams Entitled to Have You.
    • Iris is meant to be seen as somebody who's a good friend of Ash despite the insults she gives toward him. However, many felt her constant teasing of Ash came across as outright bullying since, unlike Ash's dynamic with Misty, Ash had become such a Nice Guy it came off as undeserved and he rarely hurled insults back. Iris being an Adaptational Wimp compared to her Gym Leader/Champion counterparts (at least until Journeys made her the Champion of Unova) made her attitude and insisting on acting like she's a better trainer than Ash undeserved, as she was no more experienced and just as prone to foolish plays. That her criticisms of Ash relied on how he Took a Level in Dumbass during Black & White, when he should have been the more mature and experienced did Iris no favors.
    • Faba is meant to be somebody whose villainy came from letting jealousy get the better of him in a Moment of Weakness and is working towards improving himself and making amends. However, since Faba's first action upon being caught was trying to pin his crimes on Lusamine, his Heel Realization occurs offscreen, along with a lack of any major changes in his behavior, makes many feel he's just pretending to be remorseful to gain a lighter sentence. A sentiment that got reinforced when he tried to sabotage Ash at the Alola League by attempting to control him with hypnosis, one of the actions he was previously treated as a villain for doing.

@ I Know What You Did Last Summer

  • Draco in Leather Pants: While there is no disputing that Helen is The Woobie and a Nice Girl, a lot of fans try to ignore or downplay her less than admirable actions in helping cover up the hit-and-run in a way that has a lot to do with the attractiveness of Sarah Michelle Gellar and the sad and frightened expressions she gives her character.

@ Friday the 13th (2009)

  • Ron the Death Eater: Bree sleeping with Trent while he is still technically dating her friend (although there are serious signs they are about to break up) and taping herself having sex with Trent isn’t exactly Final Girl behavior, but isn’t particularly bad for this franchise. However, a lot of fanfiction takes it for granted that she is a Gold Digger out to blackmail Trent with her sex tape and/or (due to a shot of an unopened box of condoms in the extended cut) deliberately get pregnant to make Trent marry or financially support her, and that she is planning to do so throughout all of her screen time.

    Dama Montalvo

Dama Montalvo

Species: Human

Appears in: Jedi: Mace WIndu | Purge
A Padawan who serves in the Clone Wars and survives Order 66, but is captured and killed by the Empire shortly before the Conclave on Kessel.
  • Defiant to the End: After being violently tortured by Vader over information he probably doesn't have, he merely replies that if he knew the information Vader wanted, he still wouldn't tell him.
  • Eye Scream: Darth Vader's torture leaves him with two bruised eyelids, with one being so bloated it is hard to tell if there is still an eye there.
  • Hero of Another Story: He survives Order 66 through unclear means and something about his subsequent actions convinces the Empire that he possess vital information that is worth taking him alive and torturing him over, with Vader even believing he may know where Obi-Wan Kenobi is. However, Dama is only seen being tortured and killed without any details about his actions between his two appearances being given.
  • Neck Snap: Vader breaks Dama's neck with his bare hands in a moment of anger after failing to learn anything from him in an interrogation.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: He only appears for a couple panels during his debut (a funeral scene where he never speaks) and is killed after appearing for less than a page of his second and final appearance.

@ Global Heresy Mostly just checking current tropes to maybe crosswick.

  • British Stuffiness: Lord Foxley, and to a lesser extent his wife, are English aristocrats who a bit uptight around their American guests at first.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: The record company bigwigs are trying to covertly record the band's music to sell bootleg copies and also attempt to trick them into signing away creative control of their songwriting.
  • Heroic Bastard: The Foxley's niece Georgia, who was born out of wedlock, is a fairly good person, and an environmental scientist.
  • I Have This Friend: Charles (claims to have learned legal language from his former law studdent Lord Foxley (Charles is realyl a disguised Foxley), when he stops the band from signing Chancellor's contract.
  • Land Poor: Lord and Lady Foxley need to rent their mansion just to be able to afford to pay part of the debt on it and are desperate enough for money that they are willing to pose as their own servants for the guests.
  • Logical Latecomer: As guests to the mansion, the musicians are exposed to stuff that the Foxley family have lived with for years, and some of their coments (like how not spending time with his niece just because she is illegitimate) strike home with Edward and make him realize he has been too proud and bad at communicating with his loved ones.
  • Nice to the Waiter: The band is initially a bit entitled towards the "servants" and not too considerate of them, but soon get better and are chumming around with them a lot. Ben's meanness to them is one of the final straws for their ability to tolerate him.
  • Promotion, Not Punishment: After Chancellor's Read the Fine Print fraud on behalf of his record company bosses is revealed, as the other musicians start hurling very angry and profane insults at him all over the place. Leo suddenly has this to say.
Leo: You've got everything it takes to be our manager.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: James Chancellor is trying to carry out the dishonest wishes of the record company, but does have some appreciation for the music the band is making and fondness for their members, as well as being driven due to his boss having threatened to fire him.
  • Read the Fine Print: Chancellor is trying to get the band to sign a 90 page contract which has a short clause that would give the record company control of the band's songs.
  • Slobs vs. Snobs: The Foxleys (posh aristocracy’s) and the band (American rock and rollers) have some Culture Clash at first.

@ Underworld (2003)

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Erika is quite eager to be Kraven's lover and is annoyed by his fixation on Selene. However, she remains friendly with Selene and gives up her crush on Kraven in the novel and a deleted scene.
