Thanks, Arivne

YMMV.Xanadu 1980

  • Awesome Music:
    • The soundtrack composed by the Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John is filled with gems, with even many of the film's detractors regarding the music to be the one redeeming quality of the film (as a matter of fact, in complete contrast to the film, which was a critical failure and a box office bomb, the soundtrack album would become a massive worldwide critical and commercial success, to the point that it would be certified as double platinum in the US). The main theme song, "Xanadu", is especially a feel-good bop backed by groovy and upbeat music and cheerful lyrics. It is so good, in fact, ELO still performs it in concerts to this very day.
    • In contrast to the other disco-filled songs in the album, "Whenever You're Away From Me" is a beautiful, swinging, and heartwarming big-band duet between Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton-John that would fit well in the 1940s and 1950s. Props to it being one of Gene Kelly's final performances.

  • Broken Base: The film's reception can be divided into three camps. Those who find it to be a campy but genuinely enjoyable and endearing musical fantasy, those who consider the film to be ironically enjoyable because of the Special Effects Failure and cheesy script, and those who find the film to be a schlocky mess with no redeemable qualities outside of its soundtrack.

  • Narm Charm: The film is filled with some of the campiest and cheesiest effects and writing to ever grace an '80s film, but for many who watch it and regard it as a Cult Classic, that is exactly what makes the film so delightful and endearing. It helps that it is backed by some genuinely fun and passionate performances, a hopeful and optimistic tone, and Awesome Music by ELO, all of which only add to the film's charm.

YMMV.Super Mario Maker:
  • Many Sonic fans were baffled and unpleased that Sonic's running sprite is him rolling instead of his iconic Wheel of Feet animation from the Genesis games. While this makes some sense, given that rolling is typically how Sonic achieves full speed in the classic games, many fans still found the decision to make it his running animation ridiculous, especially since Sonic already had a proper running sprite via the Wheel of Feet animation.

YMMV.Super Mario Bros:

YMMV.Super Mario All Stars:

  • Broken Base The 16-Bit rearrangements. Some love the rearrangements to the point of preferring them over the original tracks, while others feel they miss the mark and lack the punch and simple charm of their original 8-bit counterparts.

YMMV.Puss In Boots The Last Wish:

  • Award Snub: Despite being one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2022 and having a successful run at the box office, it would lose the nomination for best animated feature to Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio at the 2023 Academy Awards. Unusually though, fans were not really upset by this loss, finding Del Toro's Pinocchio to be well deserving of the award and being quick to congratulate the film for winning. It helps that fans of both films were Friendly Fandoms during the Academy Award run up, with fans finding both films to be masterpieces and actively rooting for either film to win over Pixar's Turning Red (if only to prevent Disney/Pixar from winning once more).

Kangaroo Jack: G'Day U.S.A.!
  • Fauxreigner: Outback Ollie secretly talks in an American accent which he later speaks with after he gets exposed.

For Fanon.Live Action TV:

  • Abbott Elementary: Most fans headcanon Melissa as a bisexual or lesbian, mainly due to shipping related reasons. In canon, Melissa is only shown to be attracted to males and their is no hint of her being attracted to women.

For Dry Docking:

  • Abbott Elementary: One look at AO3 or Tumblr, will show that a large part of the fandom refuses to ship Melissa with anyone, canon or fanon, mainly so they can imagine or write fics were they or a reader insert ends up with her. The fact that she is played by the very beautiful Lisa Ann Walter certainly doesn't hurt this either.

Any corrections?

@ Krypton: Other Kryptonians

  • Adaptational Villainy: He is an ally of Superman in the comics but is a Black Shirt who dies long before Superman is born in this continuity.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She has few if any qualms about brutally oppressing the Rankless but seems to have real feelings for Daron-Vex.

     Tai-In

Tai-Un

Played By: Jennifer Lee-Moon

A Sagitari soldier loyal to Lyta.

  • Locked Out of the Loop: She helps search the outlander for Seg, capture Zod and hold Adam prisoner after his lies are revealed, but is made to wait outside of the room while the time travel reveals are discussed.
  • Remember the New Guy?: She first appears in episode 5, but Lyra knows and trusts her well enough to take her as backup on a vital mission.
  • Token Good Teammate: She is the first Military Guild member besides Lyta shown doing anything useful and beneficial with her authority.

     Taz-Ran

Taz-Ran

Played By: Desmond Eastwood

A young officer who becomes suspicious about the preparations for the Vex coup.

  • Bald Head of Toughness: His head is shaved (although he has a couple weeks growth of hair) and he puts up a decent fight against Jayne when she decides to silence him.
  • Properly Paranoid: He is suspicious about the release of a terrorist bomber and pretends to drop the matter when Dev-Em talks to him about it. However, he is secretly suspicious of Dev-Em and goes to their commander while also preparing a report about the possible threat to the Voice of Rao. Unfortunately for him, Jayna is in on the plot.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He serves a sinister theocracy and is alert to threats against it but seems genuinely concerned with protecting people rather than enforcing tyranny.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He dies in his first episode.

    Dar-On

Dar-On

Played By: Patrick Buchanan

A Military Guild officer who ends up obliviously following orders from Brainiac later in season 1.

  • Enemy Mine: He joins forces with the rebel army he has been enforcing curfews against after being convinced of the truth about Brainiac but vows to place them under arrest once the threat is over. Brainiac exploits this for a Divided We Fall ploy.
  • One-Steve Limit: If you eliminate the hyphen in his name, it is the same as main character Daron.
  • Tap on the Head; He is knocked out with a blow to the head during a fight with Seg and Nyssa, but is walking around fine a few hours or days later.

    Yim-Gar

'Yim-Gar''

Played By: Nicholas Prasad

An Air Force commander seen in the season 1 finale.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!: He is introduced packing up to try to flee the city as Brainiac prepares to collect it. It takes a punch and Rousing Speech from Lyta to change his mind.
  • Uncertain Doom: He presumably dies when Brainiac destroys the waves of attacking airships.

    Mal

Mal

Played By: Nicholas Prasad

A Black Zero soldier who serves Jax as her lieutenant.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: He acts as a guard for Jax-Ur and is no wimp, but lacks her lethality.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: He rejects a huge bribe to help Daron escape and affirms his intent to help punish the man whose government (among other things) hoarded medicine for the elites while Mal watched his family get infected and die a slow death.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He has prominent roles in the last two episodes of season 1 (and survives the final battle) but never appears in season 2.

  • Secret-Keeper: He is one of the few people who is told about the threat of Brainiac and Adam being a time traveler.

    Sevi and Anda

Sevi and Anda

Played By: India Mullen and Kim Adis

The Voice of Rao's two main acolytes.

  • Ms. Exposition: Sevi is the one who reveals that the Brainiac-possessed Voice of Rao is draining the lifeforms of embryos from the genetic plant, as she spied on him doing it before fleeing.
  • Never Bareheaded: They are only ever seen wearing Acolyte robes that cover their heads.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: They serve a sinister theocrat, but are fairly nice women who come to oppose Rao as they grow more alarmed by the signs of Brainiac controlling him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Neither is seen (aside from in a hallucination scene) after they fully turn against the Voice of Rao.

The Cythonnites

     Cythonnites in General

Cythonnites

A group of worshippers of an ice god whose followers were declared heretical by Rao. They also act as the guardians of the imprisoned Doomsday and will do anything to keep him locked away.
  • Demoted to Extra: They have a big presence in season 1 but are scattered offscreen in season 2 and only Raika appears before being quickly captured and brainwashed.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: They have fairly heroic goals but sometimes ruthless methods and go back and forth from helping Seg and his allies to threatening or double crossing them multiple times, depending on whether they share a common goal at the time.
  • Tunnel King: They live in a series of tunnels in the wilderness and know about tunnels that go all the way to Kandor.

    Anireh

Anireh

Played By: Beatrice Comins

The leader of the Cythonnites.
  • Minor Major Character: She is an important faction leader with very few scenes, while her subordinates Raika and Junra appear more often.
  • Signature Headgear: She is always shown wearing a horn-shaped hat bigger than her head.
  • Wasteland Elder: She leads a tribe that has spent generations subsisting in the icy, barren Outlands to fulfill their sacred duties.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: She is never seen after season 1, after Zod scatters her group during the Time Skip.

    Raika

Raika

Played By: Sonita Henry

The first Cythonnite Seg encounters, who maintains a complicated relationship with him.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Her hair is cut very short, almost shorter than Seg’s.
  • Death of Personality: She is captured, brainwashed, and loses most of her old memories and personality in season 2.
  • Hero of Another Story: Seg finds her having been captured and tortured by Zod as part of his failed efforts to find Doomsday, and she does a lot of work on behalf of her group offscreen throughout the show.
  • I Owe You My Life: She repeatedly helps or spares Seg because he saved her from Zod.

    Junra

Junra

Played By: Lukas Loughran

The main enforcer of the group.

@ Citywide Evacuation

  • Krypton: In the season 1 finale, Brainiac tries to collect the city state of Kandor, shrink it, and put the residents in suspended animation, and lots of people try to get out before he can finish the process. Many citizens and soldiers flee in skimmers offscreen (although some are shot down), Seg tries to get people out through tunnels and calling transports from other cities, and Ajax-air and her Black Zero troops pack up to flee across the Outlands on foot.

Captain America: The First Avenger

  • Lost in Translation: The part where Steve assumes that "fondue" is something sexual doesn't make sense in the French dub since every French people know that fondue is melted cheese.

Super Mario Bros Z: Character (Mecha Sonic/Metallix)

  • Bottomless Magazines: His arm cannon never runs out of bullets and missiles. Not only his whole body shouldn't be able to store all of these ammunitions, but he shouldn't even be able to create more since he's stuck in a world that doesn't use the same weaponry as his.

Amorphous+: Characters (Inkies)

  • Interface Screw: If the player gets it by one of them, the screen turns black for a few seconds.

Uncle Albert's Adventures

  • Talking Animal:
    • Tom can talk despite being a chameleon. It's never explained why.
    • Mysterious Island has a talking parrot called Kipling. He can still talk if you turn him into a frog.
  • Top-Down View: The mainline games use a "from above" sight since it's the best choice of perpective to interact with a book world.
  • Trilogy: Altough there are five mainline games, the first three are officially considered a trilogy. It's notable that, on top of having a graphical overhaul, Le Temple Perdu and La Statuette Maudite do not make any reference to the plots of the original three games. There are some Call Backs about these games, but not about their plots. It's also notable that only the original trilogy was released outside of France, meaning that from the point of view of non-French players, the games are a true trilogy.
  • Uniqueness Decay: In the first three games, Uncle Albert only had one album which was considered his most precious property and was located in his attic. Le Temple Perdu and La Statuette Maudite reveal that Uncle Albert has multiple albums hidden around the world.
  • Units Not to Scale: Most animal have unrealistic sizes so they can all fit together in the album and be interacted with by the player. As a result, frogs, ladybugs and snails have similar sizes for example.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Averted. The narrator's mother thinks that Uncle Albert's stories about him travelling all around the world may not be true, but everything in the games indicate that Uncle Albert's stories are real.
  • Vocal Evolution: Altough his voice actor is still the same, Alberto sounds completely different in the French version of Fabulous Voyage and Mysterious Island.
  • The Voice: We never know what the child narrator looks like. The most we see is his arms in the last Magical Album cutscene.
  • We Named the Monkey "Jack":
    • While stranded on an island, Uncle Albert tamed a monkey which he named "Gus", because the monkey reminded Albert of an old friend of his.
    • The original French name of Kipling the parrot is "Hugo". Its said in a cutscene that it's after Victor Hugo.

@ Jack Frost (1997)

Several of the bigger scene stealers in the film have pretty secondary roles.

@ Jack Frost (1997)

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Jolly storekeeper Paul Davrow offers discounted bullets to the rest of the town the moment he hears there is a killer on the loose, and also starts smashing snowmen as soon as he witnesses a living snowman commit another murder. He also helps defeat Jack in the climax.
@ Other Kryptonians

    Kiyo

Kiyo

Portrayed by: Sarah Armstrong
A member of Zod's Black Zero splinter cell.
  • Impersonating an Officer: She poses as a Sagitari to operate in the city without being questioned.
  • Secret-Keeper: Dialogue indicates that she knows about Brainiac's approach and Zod being a time traveler who is no longer taking orders from Jax-Ur.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Despite helping Zod with some important errands across multiple episodes and seeming to know a lot about important events in the show, she is unceremoniously shot down when Lyta comes to rescue Seg from Zod.
  • Torture Technician: She implants a bug in Seg's body to cause him pain and make him surrender information.

    Mama Zed

Mama Zed

Portrayed by: Shobu Kapoor
A matriarchal figure among the Rankless.
and she only returns, as a Resistance leader, in the season 2 premiere.
  • Parental Substitute: She raised Kem, but is not his mother.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Portrayed sadly, when she leads the Sagitari to the other Resistance leaders (apparently just to save her life) after being captured, despite clearly being upset about it, but they shoot her In the Back anyway.
@ Krypton
  • But What About the Astronauts?: Referenced indirectly. Krypton has three moons, and while only one is described as having a "completely self-sufficent, fully sustainable colony", that also seems to indicate that the other two moons have colonies more dependent on the planet (or at least they are during the main series). What happens to those moons and their colonists after Krypton is destroyed in the original timeline is unclear, although the two non self-sufficent ones would have been in for a rough time. While the third moon, Wegthor, is destroyed during the course of the series, the chain of events that causes this happens due to history changing, making it unclear what happened to it in the old timeline.

@ Teen Power Inc.

  • The Ghost: In Danger in Rhyme, the perpetrator of the crime spree is not present during the denouement where he is identified, is arrested offscreen, and never encounters the narrator beforehand (although he is mentioned by name in one earlier chapter).

@ Teen Power Inc.

  • Zim’a son disappears while Zim is on a business trip. Zim comes racing back to town to help investigate and, through some quick deductive reasoning, figures out which past enemy of the gang is the vengeance-seeking culprit even after Nick overlooks that person during their brainstorming session.

@ The Rise of Renegade X

  • Briar Patching: In the first book, Pete tries to torture Damien by making him torture Kat, and Damien mocks him as a coward who is too scared to hurt Kat himself or kill Damien, even though they are standing right by the ledge of a skyscraper and Damien has a well-known fear of heights. Pete buys it and makes Damien jump off the roof, certain he is subjecting his foe to the cruelest death possible for him. Unfortunately for Pete, Damien has recently developed the power of flight.
  • Extreme Doormat: In the fifth book, Kat is initially envious of how her Alternate Self seems like The Ace, before realizing that she just does everything her parents tell her to (even get engaged) without any reflection of whether it is the right thing to do and/or what she really wants.
  • Gene Hunting: When Damien learns his dad is a superhero, he runs around collecting the hairs of the three most likely candidates for a DNA test. This becomes unnecessary when he ends up calling his mother with a phone belonging to one of his suspects and his mother thinks he has already found out the truth and goes into a rant about how that guy is indeed his dad.
  • Kidnapped Scientist: In the first book, Damien's Mad Scientist mom kidnaps Sarah’s dad to force him to make a hypnotism device for her after reading about how "Dr. Kink" has invented such a device. Actually, Sarah herself is the one who invented that device and her dad has no idea how to duplicate her experiment. Damien points out to his mom that she really should have realized that sooner, as the elder Kink is a biologist and not an engineer.

@ The Rise of Renegade X

  • Early in the first book, Kat, and Damien's mom, accuse him of giving Kat the cold shoulder even though Kat has his phone, and he has no way of calling her without it.
  • Damien finds his mom’s old diary and finds the date of his conception, where his mom talks about being unable to believe who she just had sex with in a bathroom. Excited at the buildup, Damien flips the page and reads "a foil pan and a turkey baster". After a moment of shock, he realizes that his mom tore a few pages out of the diary to hide the identity of her lover, but the sentence jump to his mother's Thanksgiving dinner preparations (complete with complaining about how her mother hates her cooking), with an unfortunate accidental sentence combination.
  • Damien's Two-Timer Date, in which he acts as both a villain helping Kat rob a store and a hero helping Sarah try to prevent the robbery.
  • Damien's file at the Academy of Evil he hopes to attend says that he may not be evil enough because he let his mother's lab rats go before she could kill them for an experiment. He sourly notes that his mom was the one who got the two of them treating the rats like pets in the first place and that one of the rats bit them after he let them go.

CommonKnowledge.Super Mario Bros

  • Many fans know Daisy used to be Ambiguously Brown before her redesign, to the point that some have accused Nintendo of "whitewashing" her when they redesigned her. However, Daisy has never actually been depicted with brown skin, as she has been portrayed as having white skin in Super Mario Land, with most of her early appearances depicting her with a fair-skinned appearance akin to Peach years before her redesign. While some of her renders and models from the early '90s and early 2000s do give her a slight tan, this was more a byproduct of the limitations of early CGI at the time than a deliberate creative choice, as several human Mario characters — including Mario himself — have been depicted with a tanned look in many early 3D renders around the mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s.

  • Mario and Peach are often regarded to be an Official Couple by many fans and critics, with some viewing them as the video game equivalent of Mickey and Minnie. However, while there is a ton of Ship Tease between them, and it is confirmed that the two have mutual romantic feelings for each other, the two are mostly Just Friends. There were plans for them to finally hook up and even get married to each other in Super Mario Odyssey, but this was scrapped from the final game (likely to maintain the series' status quo). The same also applies to Luigi and Daisy.

Rule 34 – Creator Reactions:

  • On his "Smash or Pass" video covering his series, asdfmovie, TomSka briefly touched upon the porn parody video of Beep Beep I'm a Sheep by the infamous Minus -8, suggesting that he would "smash" the anthro Sheep, only to then say it's a pass and admit that "it doesn't feel right".

  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: In "The Wrath Classic Launch Experience," Arthas, aka the Lich King, finds out the hard way that the current crop of players are rather insane when an Undead player starts licking the floor because Sylvanas stood in the same spot in the "Shadowlands" cinematic. He lets out a Rapid-Fire "No!", runs back to the Frozen Throne and mashes the "REFREEZE" button, hoping not to fight the crazed horde of players.
  • Something We Forgot: In "The Current State of Classic WoW," the Blizzard employees are celebrating the launch of Dragonflight. A younger employee says that he feels like he forgot something. The older employee tells him to relax and that if he can't remember, it wasn't important. The younger employee agrees, before revealing the thing he forgot was maintaining the status of Classic WoW, with players having to wait 40-50+ days for ticket responses.

  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Season 5 Episode 28 has only three people advance to the second challenge rather than the usual four. Two of them are rivals who are stealing the whole show. The third contestant barely gets any focus throughout the episode, except to talk about how quiet he is compared to the other two. Ultimately, he creams them both in the final challenge and wins the $50,000.

Unico

  • The Heckler: During the manga's prologue, Unico gets verbally harassed by an unamused spectator in the middle of his performance during a Pet Contest held in Thessila by telling him "He's not real unicorn, just a person inside a costume!". He orders a cat to "remove his disguise" before Unico counteracts by ramming into the cat which then hits the spectator into the stadium's walls. The announcer responds to the heckler's comment by telling guests that "Unicorns hate tricks and harassment.", since everybody in the stadium are convinced in the existence of unicorns with Unico as real evidence.
