Draft of a page for Anime.Mei And The Kittenbus. Any corrections?

Mei and the Kittenbus is a 2002 13-minute short film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and a pseudo-sequel to his 1988 film, My Neighbor Totoro. It is the first direct sequel to a Studio Ghibli film.

As the title indicates, the short film stars 4-year-old Mei Kusakabe as she comes across a tiny version of the Catbus called a Kittenbus on a very windy day after it winds up flying into her house. Later in the night, the Kittenbus takes Mei on a short little adventure where she not only has another encounter with Totoro, but discovers a whole world of other Totoros and Catbuses.

The film is one of twelve short films made exclusively for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan, and to this day, visiting the museum remains the only possible way to watch the film, as it has never been released outside of the museum in any form.

The short film features the following tropes:

  • Animal-Vehicle Hybrid: Beyond the returning Catbus and the titular Kittenbus, the film reveals that there is a whole world of Catbuses, including a super long cat bus and a giant elderly catbus in the shape of an airliner.
  • A Day in the Limelight: As the title indicates, the film is primarily focused on Mei and the newly introduced Kittenbus, alongside the Catbus himself.
  • Demoted to Extra: Satsuki, the other main protagonist of My Neighbor Totoro, only makes a brief non-speaking cameo in this film, as she is shown to be sleeping at night before Mei hops on the Kittenbus.
  • Immediate Sequel: The film takes place only two months after the events of My Neighbor Totoro.
  • Mini-Me: The Kittenbus is a tiny kid-sized version of the Catbus, with only enough room for one small child.
  • Name and Name: The short is titled Mei and the Kittenbus.
  • Retraux: Given that it is a direct sequel to My Neighbor Totoro, the film is deliberately animated and styled exactly like the 1988 film. It helps that the short film is directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: Mei gains Kittenbus' trust and becomes friends with him after giving him a tiny piece of caramel candy. Likewise, she later develops a friendship with the Catliner after giving her a piece of caramel candy as well.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
    • While Satsuki makes a brief non-speaking cameo, Mr. and Mrs. Kusakabe are absent.
    • Chu Totoro and Chibi Totoro are both conspicuously absent from the film, despite being Totoro's main companions in My Neighbor Totoro, and the fact that Mei goes into a whole area filled with Totoros.

Trivia.Mei And The Kittenbus:
  • Refitted for Sequel: The idea of there being multiple giant Totoros was an idea that was originally planned for My Neighbor Totoro before it was scrapped in favor of the singular Totoro that appears in the film. This short film revisits and realizes the idea.
  • Sequel Gap: The short film was released in 2002, 14 years after the release of My Neighbor Totoro.

Warcraft: Characters (WC 2 Knight / Ogre)

  • Oculothorax: Ogre-mages can summon the Eye of Kilrog, a flying eyeball who observes the battlefield.

  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The more optional party members you have, the weirder your roster gets.
    • Gamblin' Jack is a gambling addict guard from the Psy Academy who got enslaved by shadowlings until you bought him into your team. It's notable that he will stay with you even if you choose to go against the Psy Academy in the end, so he's also a potential traitor.

    • Helena is a traitor to the Mechanics who joins you for money. Flint follows her everywhere.

Major Spoilers Warning:

For Thanatos Gambit and Heroic Sacrifice Anime And Manga:

  • Kirby: Right Back at Ya!: In the episode "Crusade for the Blade" ("Sacred Sword! Galaxia" in the original Japanese version), the flashback reveals that Sirica's mom didn't die because Meta Knight let her be killed by Kirisakin, but the legendary sword Galaxia can only be held by the chosen ones: Meta Knight and Kirby. Sirica's mom knows that she wasn't a chosen one at the moment she was electrocuted by Galaxia when she wielded it, but because Kirisakin was in front of her, she knew that her sacrifice was necessary to fend off Kirisakin by wielding the Galaxia, and she tossed it to Meta Knight before she died so he could use it to defeat Kirisakin.

Thanatos Gambit and Suicide by Cop Video Games:

  • The Kindaichi Case Files: Devil's Murder Voyage: In the Golden Ending of the case, Hiromi Akagi (the true culprit) summons Luna's (the cruiser which was formerly a warship and Hajime and his friends are in it) sister ship Stella after he went to the holy land to perform an Evil Gloating in front of everyone on Luna and says that he will be better to shoot the torpedo to destroy Luna rather than being arrested, which leads Yoichi Takato, a.k.a. "The Puppet Master of Hell" (who previously disguised himself as Paris), destroys Stella by using the canon of Luna. After Stella was sunken along with Hiromi, Hajime reveals that it is exactly what Hiromi wants, and he further deduces that if Hiromi wanted to win or meant it, he would have shot the torpedo first instead of gloating (and before Takato could do it). Definitely, both Hajime and Takato (the latter escaped after his perfect crime murder plan failed) aren't happy; the latter even realized too late that he fell into Hiromi's provocation.
Takato: I can't believe you let me pull the curtain back on your revenge drama. Hiromi Akagi... I can't forgive you...

Player Two Start

Different World, Different Movies:

  • In-Universe example: Scream 3 was originally gonna be a live-action slasher film like the first two films, but it was changed to a traditional hand-drawn animated horror slasher film when Wes Craven hired Don Bluth and Gary Goldman from Fox Animation Studios to co-direct the film, although at first Don Bluth was too concerned to make a sequel and R-rated horror animated film. However, Bluth eventually agreed to make an R-rated horror slasher animated film as he actually bought the Scream videotape and watched it several times after the production of Anastasia was done. The plot was written by Kevin Williamson. It would take place four years after the events of Scream 2, with Stu Macher who turns out to be alive, orchestrating new Ghostface attacks from prison on high school students and ultimately targeting Sidney. The film was released on March 30, 2001 and aroused controversy for its graphic violence. Despite the controversy, the film received positive reception from critics and fans, with an 84% score from Rotten Tomatoes, a 71 score from Metacritic and a B+ score from Cinemascore despite the controversy. This makes Scream 3 the only Scream film to be animated as well as Don Bluth's only film to be a R-rated and distributed by 20th Century Fox instead of Dimension Films, due to production difficulties with The Weinsteins.

@ Jeremiah

  • Theo and her soldiers get a good Establishing Character Moment when several bandits try to rob their town's marketplace. They gun down the thieves from strategic locations, then have kids gather up the used shell casings to recycle them, and take the best of the robbery loot for themselves. Jeremiah also gets some points in that scene for asking if Theo is engaging in Screw the Rules, I Make Them! thinking, which causes her to give some compensation to the man whose stolen batteries she won't return.
  • Both of Theo's speeches to Jeremiah about how she saw the value of protecting things and people that other kids didn't in the early days after the Big Death, namely a school-with its civil defense shelter, fence, and roof- and kids smart enough to learn mechanical engineering,
  • One of the first indicators of how much strength and infrastructure the Valhalla Sector has is when they send six gunships (when the heroes were shocked enough to encoutner two working helicopters earlier on) to respond to the capture of Quantrell.
  • "Journeys End at Lovers Meeting" has a brief car chase that ends with Jeremiah driving backward to run their pursuers off the road.
  • Before Smith rescues Kurdy and the other captives, Kurdy refuses to leave without the others when their captors make a Spare a Messenger offer.
  • The first battle of the Unskilled, but Strong soldiers whom Kurdy has been training throughout "The Question" has most of them working well as a team and the previously cynical Gina carrying a wounded comrade to safety and later slugging the one man who abandoned the others.

@ Jeremiah

  • Farralon from "City of Roses" is a (possibly self-trained) young scientist who is working on a vaccine for the Big Death (which includes getting volunteers sick with milder forms of the disease to test their reactions). He is working for the Valhalla Sector but was in communication with Simon, who trusted him enough to tell him about Thunder Mountain. Farralon could have either been developed as an Unwitting Pawn of the Valhalla Sector who got a Heel–Face Turn or someone who knew exactly what he was doing and used the Thunder Mountain colony's trust in him to strike at the faction. Instead, he disappears after "City of Roses" except for a short flashback scene.
  • "Journeys End at Lovers Meeting" features an unnamed town leader who is committed to the survival of his town during a hard winter and is fairly resourceful (he got two cars working) but is also a Jerkass and The Social Darwinist, with a us-vs.-them mindset that makes him a Villain of the Week. He could have been a good Distaff Counterpart to Theo and either joined Daniel in season 2 or had some interesting Teeth-Clenched Teamwork with Jeremiah and Kurdy if he joined the Western Alliance, but he remains a One-Shot Character.

@ Jeremiah

  • In "Journeys End at Lovers Meeting", Kurdy criticizes how pessimistic Jeremiah is and recites a parable his mother told him about how if you show a kid a box of shit, some of them will leave in disgust while others will dig through the shit to see if there is an animal inside the box. Jeremiah’s takeaway from this is surprise that Kurdy’s mother said the word "shit" in front of her six-year-old son, causing Kurdy to get indignant at the idea Jeremiah is insulting his mom.
@ Jeremiah
  • Meaghan's situation in general. She spends fifteen years locked in an underground quarantine room that is barely bigger than a prison cell, unable to feel the sun or the wind, and with no companionship beyond one visit from Markus per day. Even for most convicted murderers, that kind of situation would be considered cruel and unusual punishment, but Meaghan is a kind woman who is innocent of anything besdies being a Typhoid Mary carrier of the Big Death who hopes her blood can provide a cure but lives in constant terror that she might accidentally expose someone to the disease and cause a deadly pandemic all over again.
  • In "Journeys End at Lovers Meeting", Kurdy opens up about his sense of isolation, even from Jeremiah, and desire to find belonging with a group of pilgrims who hope to be raptured. He briefly leaves them to help a captured Jeremiah while meaning to come back, despite their warning that leaving to do violence will estrange them. However, when he does return, he finds the pilgrims (including a woman he has romantic chemistry with) gone and is left to choose between two depressing possibilities: that those people he viewed so positively were really a Cult and committed suicide, or that their miracle came true and he got left behind.
  • In "The Question", Kent, the biggest idealist and team player out of the New Meat soldiers, is the one who has to Hold the Line and sacrifice himself for the others to escape their first battle alive. His teammates are pretty morose in their next scene.
@ Jeremiah
  • The Mook who Kurdy catches trying to lead a group of pilgrims into a trap in "Journeys End at Lovers Meeting", beats up, and interrogates, is never seen again afterward.
@ Dick Francis
  • Values Dissonance: In Wild Horses (written in 1994), a movie producer openly admits he is sleeping with the leading lady (who is repeatedly mentioned as someone desperate to do a picture that will earn her respect) and subtly threatens the narrator not to to take her away from him, with the narrator treating this as normal and acceptable. In the Me Too era, the producer looks more like a Yandere engaged in an Unequal Pairing, and the narrator's indifference to this has aged equally poorly.

  • Given how misogynistic the Fury of Russia is, what dynamics would come into play if he had a super-powered daughter or granddaughter?
  • Green, Red, White, Purple, and Golden Gary have all had lots of superhero activities which sound interesting but get little in-depth description.
@ Proposal Thread
  • Bandits: Joe Blake and Terry Collins break out of prison and embark on a bank robbery spree where they kidnap bank managers and their families the night before the robbery, merrily have dinner with their well-treated hostages, and make their hostages let them into the banks the next morning. Terry is good at long-term planning and logistical realities, while Joe excels at brilliant Refuge in Audacity Indy Ploys. The two manipulate and betray each other in escalating ways after falling in love with their hostage turned accomplice, Kate Wheeler, but ultimately get over these problems and reaffirm their bond. Even when they are cornered by the police and blame each other for this, it is all a deliberately staged show to publicly exonerate Kate and then fake their own deaths by using special effects to pretend they shot each other and wired their bodies with explosives. The two end up rich and retired in Mexico, in a polyamorous relationship with Kate, while the world assumes they are dead and sees them as folk heroes.
  • City For Conquest: Googi is an impoverished young man during The Great Depression who serves prison time for petty thefts and vows to never take risks again except for big stakes. He becomes a prominent gangster who is ruthless toward his enemies but throws generous parties for his friends, including his old friend Jimmy, a boxer who Googi makes money betting on. When Jimmy loses both his eyesight and a championship match Googi bet heavily on at the same time, Googi's main concern is for his friend. He seeks revenge on the gamblers who had Jimmy’s opponent grind rosin dust into his eyes, tricking them into inviting him to leave the match with them in their car when he has already had his bodyguard dispatch and replace their driver. He covertly checks the two men for weapons, then kills one of them without warning and lets the unarmed man leave with the threat of future retaliation unless Jimmy recovers. When the other man turns the tables and kills him, Googi's last words are to admit he didn't see that coming.

Thanks Arivne:

Anime.My Neighbor Totoro:

  • Period Piece: The film takes place in rural Japan roughly around the early 1950s, as evidenced by the fashion, the technology, several calendars dating to the 50s and there not being any television sets present.
  • Decomposite Character: The film was originally planned to only have one girl as the main protagonist. However, at some point during production, Miyazaki felt the story wasn’t working with one girl, so he decided to split her into two sisters, Mei and Satsuki, instead. Despite this, the young girl still made it onto the Japanese theatrical poster.

Trivia.My Neighbor Totoro:

  • Cash-Cow Franchise: Well, okay, "franchise" is probably a stretch, given that the only works in the franchise consist of the original feature film, a novel adaptation of that film, and a short film sequel exclusive to the Ghibli Museum. However, there is no denying that My Neighbor Totoro is Ghibli's biggest moneymaker, with Totoro having made $1.46 billion dollars as of 2019 thanks to its box office gross ($41 million), home video sales ($277 million) and merchandise sales ($1.142 billion). After all, he is Ghibli's mascot for a reason.
  • Early Draft Tie-In:
    • The film's original theatrical poster features the original sole protagonist, instead of Satsuki and Mei, as is the case in the final film. The poster was later reused by Disney and GKIDS for their North American DVD/Blu-Ray releases of the film.
    • The cover art of the official soundtrack release is a piece of concept art that shows Catbus filled with giant Totoros, which was an idea that was considered for the film, but scrapped from the final production.
  • Mid-Development Genre Shift: My Neighbor Totoro was originally developed to be a children's picture book in the mid-1970s, before Miyazaki decided to turn it into a film in the early eighties shortly before founding Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki's original plan would eventually come to fruition a couple of decades later, however, as My Neighbor Totoro would be adapted into a novel by Tsugiko Kubo in 2001.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: Many of the film's promotional art depicts a few scenes of Totoro and the girls hanging out that were not featured in the film itself, such as them fishing, relaxing, and riding the Catbus, amongst other scenes. It is unknown if these were scenes that were cut from the film or if they were just made for promotional use.

YMMV.My Neighbor Totoro:

  • Common Knowledge: Many viewers tend to assume the pre-Disney English dub was done by Fox, to the point that it is often referred to as "the Fox dub" by fans. However, the dub was actually done by Streamline Pictures. Fox only distributed its home video release in North America (the 1993 theatrical release was handled by Troma through their 50th Street Films division).

YMMV.Porco Rosso:

  • Cult Classic: It is far from Hayao Miyazaki's most popular film and outside of Japan, where it did very well at the box office, it flew under the radar for many people. Over the years, however, it has obtained a dedicated cult following who consider it to be one of Miyazaki's best movies due to its more mature and grounded tone, making it stand out compared to the bulk of his work.

For Too Bleak, Stopped Caring Anime And Manga:

  • The Kindaichi Case Files: The problem while reading the "File" and "Case" arcs (a.k.a. the early arcs) for modern readers. Aside from violent victim deaths and high body counts, it's easy not to care about most of the minor/guest characters, especially official couples and the ones in Fudo high school (the school Hajime attends), who are students, teachers and friends except the main characters and some semi-regulars (Hajime, Miyuki, Officer Kenmochi, Superintendent Akechi, Reika, Itsuki, Fumi and Ryuji Saki), because most of them are either being murderednote , murderers or worsenote , often in very tragic ways. It should be noted that the setting is in the mundane world Japan where all character deaths are permanent. It certainly doesn't help that the character death prevention rate (both victims and culprits) is one of the lowest of all Japanese detective works besides Missing Parts The TANTEI Stories. Granted, when the scenario writer is replaced by Seimaru Amagi after Yozaburo Kanari retires, the rate of body counts and culprit deaths get toned down, but the violent deaths remain unchanged.

For YMMV.The Kindaichi Case Files:

  • Angst Aversion: The "Gentleman Thief The Killer" case. The story begins with Hajime comedically rescuing Sakura Izumi (Hajime's classmate) from bullies by stealing their underwear. A series of murders takes place in Gamo Gozou's (the painter) house, and Gamo is the painter who adopted Sakura. The culprit is revealed to be Sakura herself, as the victims she murdered were nasty Asshole Victims who murdered Gamo. She admits it and the case tragically ends with her stabbing herself, because it's implied that she can't take the consequences of being brought to justicenote , saying her Dying Declaration of Love to Hajime before she dies from said mortal wound. It's one of the moments where Hajime cries, and is one of the most depressing cases of the entire The Kindaichi Case Files series.
