This thread is for tropers who have trouble with English and would like some help with the crazy grammar of this crazy language.

Write down what you wish to edit on the wiki. If you have been suspended from editing, another troper might be kind enough to edit for you after your suggestions have been corrected.

The thread is for help and feedback on your own suggested edits.

If you want help correcting other people's edits (e.g., if you find a page which seems to have grammar problems but want a second opinion, or you don't feel able to fix it by yourself) then that's off-topic here, but we have a separate Grammar Police cleanup thread that can provide assistance.

Can we ask for word definitions here? I'm really good with grammar but every now and then I run into words I don't know, and I have no idea where to ask.

An article of clothing: A sleeveless sweater that's typically worn over another sweater - looks like a vest but doesn't have buttons.

What is it called?

From page 374 @Melinda

"While I clearly still have a long way to go, could you give estimates (both optimistic and pessimistic) of how long I need to stay on this thread?"

  1. When deciding whether to release you from this thread, the moderators look at how many mistakes you make per post. Based on their responses to such requests in the Edit banned/Suspended - would like to edit again thread, regularly having any number of mistakes causes them to say "no".

  2. The number of mistakes you make in a post varies from a few to a lot. If you could get the average number of mistakes per post down to "very few", you would be close to being ready to leave this thread.

The only advice I can give you is to (a) write out your post in advance in a text file or Sandbox page, then carefully re-read/proofread it before you post it and (b) obtain a spell-checker, preferably as part of your browser.

If a mistake is due to a problem with understanding English, then re-reading it won't help. However, some of your mistakes are typographical (due to improper typing) and you can catch and correct them. I often make typographical errors when typing things, but I use Firefox (which underlines words it doesn't understand) so I can correct them.

@Arivne: Thank you for the help. So like this?

  • Miss Sherlock: It didn't take long for most fans to latch onto shipping Sherlock and Wato. As with most versions of the two characters, it had already started before the first episode aired, and only grew as the episodes aired. There's plenty of fanfiction, fanart, and fanvids for the ship, along with the pairing blowing up on Twitter and having a strong following on Tumblr. This is mainly due to the chemistry between their actresses, the Les Yay between them, and the fact that their dynamic is the focus of the show. This continued even after Wato was given a proper love interest, Moriya, though thankfully he managed to avoid Die for Our Ship, and continues even after the show ended.

@ Hang 'Em High Alternate Character Interpretation

  • Cooper's desire to quit at the end casts doubt about whether he really intends to pursue the last two members of the group that lynched him even after agreeing to remain a marshal.
@ Hang 'Em High
  • Benevolent Boss: This trait is the one thing that keeps Captain Wilson from indisputably crossing the Moral Event Horizon when he decides to murder Cooper to stop his pursuit. Wilson gives his cowhands Loomis and Tommy a chance to back out, telling them that they're both young men who wouldn't be ruined by a prison term and that he'll understand if they turn themselves in.
  • The Family That Slays Together: Marshal Bliss is ambushed and murdered by seven members of the unseen Walker family to keep him from taking custody of one of their relatives.
  • It Has Been an Honor: When Charlie Blackfoot chooses to run from Cooper, he calls the five years he's worked for Wilson "good years."
  • Karma Houdini: The Walker family and the murderers of Rachel's husband are never caught.
  • Modesty Bedsheet: Jennifer, the prostitute, is covered by a bedsheet as she lies in bed with Cooper.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Shorty McLeod, who committed the murders that Cooper was non-fatally lynched over, is only seen briefly and from a distance as he's being executed.
@ Glory Road
  • Anti-Villain: Coach Rupp is portrayed as being at least slightly racist and a Sore Loser, but has some redeeming traits. He's A Father to His Men, speaking encouragingly to his players rather than blowing up at them once they start losing. He doesn't resort to cheating or personal attacks during the game. And he eventually lets black players onto his team, as detailed in the epilogue.
  • Bathroom Stall of Overheard Insults: Inverted. As several white coaches and reporters inside the bathroom stalls make racist comments about the Miners, one of them steps out and sees Haskins standing by the sink with a Death Glare.
  • Education Mama: Mrs. Flournoy is excited when her son is admitted to a university to play basketball and flies out to Texas to embarrass him in class upon hearing that he's been falling behind in his studies.
  • It Will Never Catch On: Pre-Character Development, trainer Ross Moore feels this way about having more than a token black player or two on a college team.
Ross: You carrying on like Negroes gonna be the future of basketball. Could you imagine that?

Star Wars: The Clone Wars S5E20 "The Wrong Jedi"

Unfortunate Implications: As some Star Wars fans have pointed out. I have a new trope to add to the Manly Badass Hero page:

  • Surprise Creepy: Several games he had played started cute and cheerful before becoming outright disturbing.
    • His playthrough of Ruff Times is arguably the best example. The game starts as a cute, simple game about breeding cute dogs to make cuter ones as well as taking care of them before becoming a downright disturbing commentary about how people are obsessed with having cute breeds of dogs while ignoring their birth defects. The game also features a trash can to dispose of dead dogs that progressively gets more filled the more you do so, culminating in several trash bags with dead dogs inside littered near it.

I spell-checked using Grammarly as well.
