This thread is for tropers who have trouble with English and would like some help with the crazy grammar of this crazy language.

Write down what you wish to edit on the wiki. If you have been suspended from editing, another troper might be kind enough to edit for you after your suggestions have been corrected.

The thread is for help and feedback on your own suggested edits.

If you want help correcting other people's edits (e.g., if you find a page which seems to have grammar problems but want a second opinion, or you don't feel able to fix it by yourself) then that's off-topic here, but we have a separate Grammar Police cleanup thread that can provide assistance.

Here are some more tropes for the Scream fic, Quantum Entanglement.

• Disappeared Dad: Tara's dad left when she was eight, after finding out that Sam isn't his biological daughter.

• My Greatest Failure: Before getting hit by a car, Tara talks about how she failed to notice Amber's psychopathic tendencies until it was too late.

• Not What It Looks Like: When Tara asks Amber what is Richie's shirt doing in the latter's house, Amber says "it's not what it looks like".

• Parental Issues: Tara has this with her mom and dad. Her dad left when she was eight and only left her a necklace that she gives to Amber as a gift. Her mother is an alcoholic who is verbally and physically abusive to Tara.

• The Alibi: When Amber is arrested for killing Wes, Vince is able to prove that he saw her with Tara at the time of Wes's death when he delivered a takeout to Tara's house.

The Boys (2019)

Pokemon: Festival of Champions

  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Pikachu starts off as downright hostile towards Red, rejecting his kindness. It’s easy to see why when it’s revealed he was an outcast from his herd due to his weakness, caught by a monstrously abusive trainer who only pretended to show him kindness before beating Pikachu and discarding him for his inability to use electric attacks.
    • Green Took a Level in Jerkass between the time he started his journey and the time he entered the Indigo League. After learning this happened because his Raticate died saving him in a battle with Team Rocket, and Green blames himself for not being strong enough to save his Pokemon, it is impossible not to feel bad for him.
  • Too Cool to Live: Green’s Raticate is, in all of his appearances, an Invincible Hero who is an obstacle Red can never overcome. As a result, Raticate dies before Red can get anywhere close to defeating it.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Pikachu’s original trainer is established as a massive Jerkass with his abuse of Pokemon, but he really shows how monstrous he is when he attempts to kill Red, showing he will not heistate to harm humans.
  • Unexpected Character: Since the comic is focused on the Indigo League, nobody expected Steven, the Final Boss of generation 3 games, to be a participant.
  • The Woobie: Green’s Arcanine is a Pokemon who is introduced as a Growlithe being smuggled by Team Rocket before Green’s Raticate frees it. It follows Green out of gratitude for freeing him, and soon witnesses Raticate die. After becoming Green’s Pokemon, Arcanine gradually sees his trainer become a much colder person, who eventually tells Arcanine to stop using the Extreme Speed they spent so much time mastering to honor Raticate.

Father Ted S1E3 "The Passion of Saint Tibulus"

  • Bad Boss: Bishop Brennan has nothing but contempt for Ted, Dougal, and Jack. Even considering his valid criticism, he goes well beyond making a point and becomes outright spiteful after Ted and Dougal's protest against the movie makes it a hit, even though they do exactly what he orders them to. As punishment, Brennan plans to send them to parishes where they will almost certainly die.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: As much of jerk as Brennan is, he is disgusted with Ted’s theft of money that was supposed to go help a sick child and spending it at Las Vegas. He likewise is outraged with Dougal causing the Blackrock Incident, and when Dougal says the people harmed were only nuns, Brennan responds that "nuns are people too!"
  • You Have Failed Me: Outraged that protest of the movie only drew more attention to it, not caring that he ordered the protest in the first place, Brennan plans to send Dougal, Jack and Ted to much worse parishes where they will almost certainly die. He is stopped thanks to Jack stealing the video of Brennan with his secret mistress and lovechild, giving the trio leverage against their boss.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership

ShipShape Team & Allies

A growing group of friends aboard the mobile Shipshape Island, led by the Mario Bros. and Connie, is setting out to achieve the impossible: to restore the broken Concordia and stop the sinister plans of Zokket and his dark forces.

    General

  • Island Base: Shipshape Island is a mobile, ship-like haven that serves as the brothers' base as they navigate the expansive ocean of Concordia. As the game unfolds, it becomes a bustling hub for their growing band of allies and civilians. More islands will be connected along the journey, introducing various shops and merchants to enhance the experience.
  • World Tree: Connie is seeking to grow a new Uni-Tree on Shipshape Island, and the brother's goal is to link the disparate islands to the new tree.

    IDLE

Four Concordian children from Desolatt Island proudly consider themselves the guardians of their home. However, when they team up with the Shipshape Team to restore and save Concordia, they seize an incredible opportunity to prove their bravery. With the uplifting support of Peach and Starlow, these young heroes are ready to rise to the occasion and show what they're made of.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership

  • Big Bad Ensemble: Bowser and his minions are locked in a fierce battle against Zokket and his forces, both vying for control over the fate of Concordia.

  • Darker and Edgier: If the heroes fail to reconnect Concordia, and uncover and thwart the dark plot unfolding in the fractured world, the repercussions could extend far beyond Corcondia. This is especially troubling, considering that a dark force has already succeeded in tearing Corcondia apart in the first place.

  • Fan Nickname: Many fans tend to refer to Vivid BAD SQUAD as "Vivid GAY SQUAD" due to the heaps of Homoerotic Subtext and Ship Tease between Akito & Toya and Ann & Kohane.
  • Mis-blamed: A lot of older Vocaloid fans blame this series for killing off Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA. However, Colorful Stage had nothing to do with Project Diva's demise, as what killed Project Diva came down to the games being too costly to make with little payoff, which isn't helped by the series' main producer — Hiroshi Utsumi — having left Sega following the underperformance of X.

Hope you had a heartfelt, productive or relaxed Vererans Day, depending on your situation. That was a good day to take off. Thanks for getting us CB an early start today or late start last night (depending on your time zone).

I apologize for having so many instances where you couldn’t tell what I was saying and Halloween and Law and order examples where my syntax made your suggestions not quite right. Feel free to de-read them now if you want and think it will help you understand my writing style better.

@ Buffy Sunnydale

  • Gang of Bullies: He has at least one fellow Jerk Jock crony who he sends to take his place in an after-school brawl with Xander after Joe gets a chance at some Auto Erotica with Harmony in that timeframe.
  • Serendipitous Survival: A monster drawn to attack people with lots of confidence, callousness, or aggression attacks the fight Joe scheduled with Xander and kills the boy Joe had take his place once he got the opportunity to go on a last-minute date.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: The Scoobies randomly pick his name from a list of tenants at a building where they need to confront a villain in order to get past the front desk. When that confrontation turns deadly, Sledge arrives in a Big Damn Heroes moment after the concierge tells him about his supposed visitors.

@ Drive Me Crazy

  • Pet the Dog: For all other passive-aggressiveness toward Nicole, Alicia does step in when she engages in too much Drowning My Sorrows over Brad dating Kathy, taking away the beer Nicole is drinking and calling her a safe ride (although this is downplayed by her refusal to drive Nicole home herself when Nicole might puke on Alicia's leather seats).

@ Exit Wounds

@‘Law order bad girl

  • She Cleans Up Nicely: While never quite unattractive, the punk wardrobe and hygiene Monica displays in her early scenes are off-putting, while her makeup, better-groomed hair, and the sweater she wears during her trial give her a more cute and innocent look. Once Jack begins feeling conflicted about getting her sentenced to death, one of the other characters asks if maybe her new look is giving him a Double Standard moment.

@ Serge AM Fm

  • Bit Character Caylee seems to be a Genki Girl with a thing for bright colors and a place on the more idealistic side of the Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism of her clique-separated high school crowd (turning off her cellphone at the movie theater and otherwise regularly checking in with her parents while going out) and wears a tie-dyed t-shirt for the Dream Pop group Smashing Pumpkins that a con artist uses to identify her during a fake ransom call while she is at the movies.

@ Unwitting Pawn Serge

  • Caylee and several other high schoolers who innocently obey the rules to turn off their phones at the movie theater are consequently unreachable when a con man who watched them go into the theater calls their parents to claim they have been in car accidents and need immediate wire transfers for medical attention.

@ Serge Wasted Character

They even fail to reappear in the Anachronic Order fourth book despite Dorsey saying he wrote it to bring back characters he killed off too fast.

  • Other colorful characters killed off in the first two books who fans might have similarly enjoyed seeing reappear before their deaths in the chronologically earlier Triggerfish Twist yet also remain absent include Corporate Samurai Charles Saffron, Affably Evil Zargoza, and various future possessors of the cursed Briefcase Full of Money like Patty, Joe, Sammy, Jethro, and Paul (while the last two are still alive at that point, they are killed off quickly in the fifth book in a way that it seems Dorsey may have had planned out while he was writing Triggerfish Twist).

@ Order of the Phoenix ymmv

  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The omission of most of the glorious prank campaign against Umbridge, Ron and Hermione being Prefects, assorted DA members like Susan, meeting the Longbottom parents at the hospital, Petunia reacting to the news Voldemort is back, and some of the scenes of Malfoy provoking the Gryffindors due to feeling emboldened by his new power and the return of Voldemort are all moments that many fans fiercely resent the movie leaving out even if they sometimes acknowledge some of those are smaller parts of the bigger plot and would have added up to a colossal runtime.

@ Street Samurai

  • The Fast and the Furious: Dominic Toretto and his street racing crew evolve from petty crooks to globetrotting, tech-savvy rogue crime fighters out to bring down major forces that include the odd crimelord or dictator in the making (whose evil plots often involve some super weapon the drivers need to understand and counter).
  • Mad Max: Fury Road: Furiosa is a genius mechanic with trust issues and immense skill with various weapons who may act loyal to Immortan Joe and the Wasteland Cities but starts out simply trying to escape that regime and later agrees to help bring it down for a better government.
  • Jeremiah: Jeremiah and Kurdy are long coat-wearing nomads of the post-apocalyptic world who seek to learn more about The Virus that killed almost all of the adults fifteen years earlier and keep it from being brought back for a fresh slaughter by whoever created it in the first place. While they are nominally loyal to Hidden Elf Village Thunder Mountain, they have strong independent streaks about helping people and following leads on their own, although by the end of season 2 this begins to fade away as Thunder Mountain morphs into The Alliance and Jeremiah and Kurdy receive promotions that change their attitudes and duties. They typically use guns, but can fight well with a sword and quarterstaff, respectively.

@ Resilience Law Order

  • Ambiguous Situation: The episode ends with Jackie saying she's finally going to stop doing what her father wanted and not keep the unborn baby for their family, but that could mean having an abortion or giving up the baby for adoption.
  • Practically Different Generations: Jackie is 14 and her half-brothers are 2 and 4.
  • Released to Elsewhere: Tom wrote a fake letter to his family's nanny's grandmother and only living relative, claiming she was taking a job in Europe when he'd really killed her.

@ Film Flint

Their final scene shows that the well-intentioned part isn't just an act when they plead with Flint not to destroy the technology which could make every part of Earth an Eden and are even willing to surrender and let him and the council have the technology to preserve it (although a treacherous attack by Rodney ruins that).

@ Our Man Flint

  • Signature Scene: Flint spotting two fake guards with a Sherlock Scan, beating them in a colorful fight, then shocking one of the men they had tried to Kill and Replace back to life with a lightbulb is a pretty iconic moment, as is the montage of the villains kidnapping all of Flint's girlfriends.

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The Comically Serious and surprisingly helpful Lieutenant Avery is a quite popular supporting character.

@ Non-Protagonist Resolver

  • Family Man and reluctant spy ring hostage/accomplice Josh Redmond is the protagonist of Money For Nothing by Donald Westlake, while actor Mitchell Robbie shares his circumstances but only debuts over a quarter of the way into the book. But Robbie is the one to outsmart the spy ring and leave them scattered, captured, dead, or defected (with some help from his cast-mates and new girlfriend) in the climax. This is lampshaded in the final scene when Robbie mentions that he is negotiating to sell Hollywood the film rights for the story and that Josh will be in the movie but not be a main character.

@ Creepy Good

  • The Only Way: Mr. Lassen's Gate Guardian is helping Jews flee the country, but is only introduced with a cold glare, standing on a foggy street. This is justified and possibly done intentionally though, given how he needs to be suspicious in case of betrayal that could get dozens of innocents killed and is actively trying to keep away anyone who isn't there on life and death business.

@ Dead Guy on Display

  • The Only Way: The first group of Resistance fugitives to make it to the church after a shootout between the Germans and an earlier group find a Rebel Leader hung from the rafters there.

@ Harbinger of Impending Doom

  • The Only Way: As the Steins and Mr. Peterson discuss the latest vague rumors of Nazis rounding up the Jews, a stranger from La Résistance who serves as a Mysterious Protector for the film shows up to tell them that government sources are confirming the story and every Jew in Denmark is being warned. They still don't believe him until Mr. Peterson goes on his way and sees all of the Jewish businesses on a nearby street deserted, with a baker ominously saying they won't be coming back.

@ Heroic Sacrifice

  • The Only Way: Lars runs into a German soldier who is starting to ride his motorcycle after the car with the fleeing Steins and is killed in the process (although it is unclear if this is a deliberate sacrifice or he was just trying to nonfatally distract the German).

@ Interrogation by Vandalism

  • The Only Way: When the Nazis fail to find Stein, a buyer and restorer of antique violins, they smash the instruments in his workshop in an effort to make Stein's gentile assistant Lars talk.

@ Restricted Rescue Operation

  • The Only Way: Lassen, the first fisherman Peterson can find who is actually taking Jews out of Denmark, is giving priority to people older than sixty, children, and the mothers of children, meaning that the fortyish Steins and their young adult daughter have to wait a while longer.

@ Translation Convention

  • The Only Way: The Danish characters are played by English-speaking actors (although some of them are actual Danes), while the invading Germans either need a translator or Bilingual Bonus knowledge to know what they are saying.

@ The Only Way is a 1970 World War II movie following the Jewish Stein family (including a young Jane Seymour (Actress)) and their friends Morton and Lars. One day, it is business as usual for them in occupied Denmark, the next, word is spreading throughout their small country that the Nazis are preparing to deport the Jews. Aided by their friends and Resistance fighters such as the mysterious Morton Jensen, the Steins and thousands of others abruptly go into hiding and find themselves racing from one place to another as they hope for the opportunity to escape the country by boat before the Nazi net closes in.

Tropes:

@ Soldier of Orange

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Jewish Bully Hunter Jan is seventh in the credits and the first of the group of friends to die by a significant margin but is quite popular.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The scene of a terrified Guus being dragged away and guillotined is quite haunting.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Rutger Hauer appeared in other movies before this Star-Making Role, but few that non-European audiences are likely to have seen.
  • Signature Scene: The Go-Karting with Bowser scene where former friends Erik and Alex run into each other at a tango event and remain tense but civil before Erik races to warn some rebels of a trap is praised for its tension and complexity.
  • The Woobie: Esther faces persecution as a Jew, leading to her fiancée Robby becoming a traitor initially to protect her before Slowly Slipping Into Evil, something she tries to deny but ultimately can't, and she ends the film as an outcast who's had her head shaved by La Résistance for staying with Robby.

@ cain civilians

    Jerval Sekara
The author of the travelogue Interesting Places and Tedious People: A Wander's Waybook.
  • Hero of Another Story: He has traveled much of the galaxy (although, implicitly under more safe and comfortable circumstances than Cain) and knows intimate details about planets far apart.
  • Mister Exposition: Amberly includes excerpts of his book to describe the geography, history, and industry of various planets Cain visits.

    Stententious Logar
An amateur historian on Gravalax whose writings are edited into Cain's first memoir volume by Amberly.
  • Blatant Lies: He titles his book an "impartial account" but spends most of it in full Propaganda Machine mode for the Imperium or ranting about his ridiculous biases against Rogue Traders. That said, he is analytical and careful (albeit still completely wrong) when discussing the rumors about Cain's role in the battle.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: He is right to insist there had to have been some shadowy conspiracy behind the revolt for it to go the way it did but blames Rogue Traders and not genestealers.

    Dagblat Tincrowser
A historian on Adumbria whose chronicles are edited into the third volume of Cain's memoirs.
  • Not So Above It All: He mostly comes across as glorifying the Imperium (although they had a lot to glorify themselves over that time) but does include some snark about the local aristocracy and the Conspiracy Theorists who think that the lack of proof that a former governor was murdered is proof itself.

    Baltazar Thromp
A writer specializing in Eldar whose works are edited into Cain's tenth memoir volume.
  • Fantastic Racism: It stands to reason that a man who writes a book called The Eldar: a History of Their Presence in the Ultima Segmentum and Some Musings Upon Possible Means of Their Eradication is not partial to the species, with him not seeming to make any kind of distinction between Drukhari and Asunyaril.

@ Children Forced to Kill

@ Loyal Animal Companion

  • The Island on Bird Street: Alex's only constant companion as he travels through the ghetto is his pet mouse, who he likes to talk to when he's lonely or contemplative.

@ Puppy Love

  • The Island on Bird Street: The preteen Alex meets a girl named Stasya (in the book, she is another Jew in hiding) during his excursions to the park, and they become close but not intimate.

@ "Rear Window" Homage

  • The Island on Bird Street: Unable to leave the ghetto ruins, Alex spies on people in nearby parks, streets, and buildings and learns that one doctor is with La Résistance, technically a crime in occupied Poland, but one that makes Alex investigate only to the point where he wants to approach the man for help.

@ Robinsonade

  • The Island on Bird Street: Alex, whose favorite book is Robinson Crusoe, undergoes an urban version of this when he remains in hiding in the bombed-out and deserted ghetto and makes rope ladders to get around and hide from the Nazi soldiers while struggling to feed and care for himself alone.

@ Scenery Gorn

@ The Island on Bird Street The Island on Bird Street is a semi-autographical work of Middle Grade Literature by Holocaust survivor Uri Orlev, who originally published the book in 1981 in Israel.

Alex is a young Polish Jew in the Warsaw Ghetto who is separated from his family during the deportations and remains in hiding in the abandoned and war-ravaged ghetto, struggling to survive while clinging to the hope his father will return one day. He engages in Robinsonade methods of survival and eluding detection from German soldiers and looters while also eventually encountering other fugitives and Resistance fighters. The story is an episodic one and a partially escapist Lighter and Softer version of the real Orlev's story, as he was unable to remain in hiding until the end of the war like Alex and was caught and sent to a concentration camp, which he fortunately survived, and was only reunited with his father nine years after the war.

The book has been translated into several languages, being one of several Orlev works which saw him awarded the Hans Christian Anderson Award for children's literature, and was adapted into a movie in 1997, with the Danish-produced film starring a young Patrick Bergin and Jack Warden.

Here are the last tropes for the Scream fic, Quantum Entanglement.

• 20 Minutes into the Past: The story starts with Tara in New York in 2023 (the fic's year of publishing), but she goes back in time to 2022 to stop Amber from killing people.

• Alliterative Name: Mindy Meeks-Martin.

• Big Sister Instinct: Just like in the movie, Sam comes back to Woodsboro to protect Tara after being told by Wes that she was attacked.

• Forced to Watch: While being punished or fighting demons in Hell, Amber watches Tara's journey to stopping the alternate timeline version of herself from killing people like she did before.

• Hate Sink: Richie is a manipulative bastard who tries to convince Amber that Tara would never love her in a romantic way so that she can hurt Tara to get Sam to come back to Woodsboro and kill other people to make a better Stab film, and when Amber refuses to do any of those things as she and Tara are a couple, he sends threatening texts to Amber, steals her phone and car and attacks Tara instead.

• Jerkass: Richie. He pretends to be kind and supportive to Amber when she talks to him about her crush on Tara and her jealousy towards Wes who also has a crush on Tara, but Richie starts making Amber believe that Tara would never love her in the same way to motivate Amber to not only hurt the girl she loves but to kill Wes. When Amber has second thoughts about hurting Tara after they become a couple, Richie becomes angry, sending threatening texts to Amber and then decides to attack Tara himself.

• Save the Villain: Subverted. The reason for Tara wanting to go back in time to stop Amber from killing people was out of guilt for not noticing Amber's romantic feelings towards her and to save Amber from Richie's manipulation that caused her to commit the murders in Woodsboro.
