For CharacterPerceptionEvolution.Live Action TV (Stranger Things tree)

  • When the first season aired, Jonathan Byers was one of the most popular characters, due to his desperation to find his brother and romance with Nancy Wheeler, with many finding their Ship Tease cute and preferring him to Nancy's current boyfriend Steve Harrington. However, in the years since and the following seasons, many fans grew to dislike Jonathan and his romance with Nancy. A lot of Jonathan's actions are now seen more as creepy then cute, most notably photographing Nancy without her consent and pursing her while knowing she had a boyfriend. Furthermore, with the rise of those who prefer the idea of Nancy ending up with Robin, it is far more common to see Jonathan get Die for Our Ship than it was before.

Any corrections?

  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Pulp adventurer Nick Carter being specifically singled out as an Invented Individual in a series that mostly gives detective stories A True Story in My Universe treatment can be a bit disappointing, given how much fun the thought of Nick, his colorful Fair for Its Day supporting cast, and his notorious Rogues Gallery existing in this universe is (although the tones of the two series' would probably clash).

Adding to YMMV/Dwarf Fortress:

* Scrappy Mechanic:

  • The mechanics related to justice, artifacts and their theft is considered to be riddled with flaws that make them much more bothersome than genuinely entertaining:
    • Once a dwarf has been convinced to steal an artifact, they will steal it, even if they were just interrogated about it, making it preventing them from taking it extremely difficult.
    • A visitor that has just confessed to being beind a plot to commit a crime, they are still allowed to roam free unless you actively convict them, which makes bringing them to justice before they can leave the map (and leaving you with a case that can never be solved because they can't be convicted).
    • A visitor that is in your fortress to commit a crime (or convince a dwarf to commit a crime), is a visitor that isn't there to genuinely visit, making visitors as a whole feel more like a bother than an actual opportunity since a good number of them will only be there to commit crimes.

YMMV.RWBY

  • Broken Base: The decision to canonize Yang/Blake in volume 9 has divided fans over whether or not it was a good decision. Since it was one of the most popular ships from the show's beginning, many fans immediately embraced and celebrated the ship finally becoming canon after nine volumes worth of Ship Tease. Others, however, didn't like it being canon, either viewing it as a poor attempt at Pandering to the Base that felt underdeveloped and forced or wishing that Team RWBY remained a familial sisterhood, arguing that the other teams were already in romantic relationships with each other and found the Family of Choice aspect of Team RWBY to be more interesting. This isn't even getting into the often fierce shipping wars.

  • Never Live It Down: Many fans have never forgiven Yang for ignoring Ruby's emotionally distraught state in volume 9 and opting to protect her newfound girlfriend Blake from Ruby instead of trying to comfort the latter, which has led many to view her as a horrible stepsister who prioritizes her girlfriend over her sister. This is ignoring that Yang had no idea Ruby was not okay and is understandably protective given that Ruby was quick to attack them, and that Yang quickly realizes her mistakes and is mournful when seeing Ruby's corpse as part of the tree.

Trivia.Sonic Generations:

  • What Could Have Been: According to one interview, Ian Flynn wanted to expand on Sonic Generations's story for the remaster and flesh out certain aspects like how the two Eggmen got out of White Space), but Sonic Team rejected this, preferring to keep the story the same as the original game.

Shot-for-Shot Remake:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog: This is the franchise's default approach to remakes/remasters. While the series has had plenty of remasters, all of them are one-to-one faithful to their original games with only some minor new additions or Anti-Frustration Features at most. Christian Whitehead did try to propose expanding on his remake of Sonic the Hedgehog CD with two new zones — Desert Dazzle and Final Fever — however, Sonic Team would reject both zones to keep the remaster faithful. This even extends to the graphics, as the remakes of the original Genesis games all retain their original 16-bit graphics despite being on newer hardware, and the cutscenes for Sonic Adventure DX remain unchanged despite Sonic Team's improved experience since the original game. This is largely because Sonic Team prefers to put their creative juices into new projects, rather than remasters.

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Norman

  • Famed in Story: Norman is widely admired in the local community for his appearance and role as a Gym Leader. He has a strong following in North Petalburg and is gaining popularity in Petalburg City. According to Max, Norman has the potential to join the Elite Four, as mentioned in Balance of Power.

Pokemon S 7 E 22 Disguise Da Limit

  • Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting: Mrs. Grimm, a determined businesswoman, aspired to see her son, Timmy, thrive in life. However, the weight of her parents' expectations made her strict and uncompromising with her family. It took a confrontation with her past and her parents' influence in this episode for her to realize how her upbringing had shaped her behavior. Although initially frustrated with her son's decision to pursue a career as a Pokémon Coordinator and run away, she ultimately embraced the idea of supporting his ambitions to prevent history from repeating itself.
  • Freudian Excuse: Growing up in a wealthy household, Mrs. Grimm was expected to take over the family business, which she dutifully did as her parents wished. Despite her love for Pokémon, she was prohibited from having any as they were seen as distracting. When her parents took away her beloved Poochyena against her will, it caused her to develop a strong dislike for Pokémon. Fortunately, she decided not to repeat her parents' mistake and allowed her son to pursue a career as a Pokémon Coordinator as long as he maintained his studies.

Inuyasha - Main Characters

Kagome

  • Love Makes You Dumb: Over time, Kagome awkwardly falls in love with Inuyasha, and her clumsiness becomes especially apparent when she's around him. Her tendency to become absent-minded, moody, and irritable in his presence serves as a reminder of the challenges that arise when a 15-year-old girl with a kind heart and fiery spirit falls for a crass yet good-hearted Half-Human Hybrid.

Rukia

  • Berserk Button: Seeing Ichigo so distraught and having a Heroic BSoD is really serious for her. She's DETERMINED to snap him out of it by any means necessary, possibly due to her own experiences with distress and the problems it can cause.

Hi, I would like to ask what's the use between the use of Who and Whom? As I had that confusion when editing tropes.

And what's the difference between the tropes: "Throw the Dog a Bone" and "Pet the Dog"?

Pet the dog is when character a, who is usually mean, does something unexpectedly nice to character b. Throw the dog a bone is when character b, who is usually unlucky, wins or is treated nicely.

@ Radio Days

  • A woman talking about how to kill a witness to murder and hide a body? Not funny. Her intercutting this with fond reminisces about how she knew the victim as a kid and also urging the woman to have some of her shrimp? Hilarious.
  • Values Resonance: While the Casting Couch is played for some comedy, it is still treated as a sleazy and exploitative misdeed that even a gangland assassin finds disgusting.
@ Monsters Demons

@ Sunnydale residents

  • If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: A nonfatal version in the season 3 comic "A Boy Named Sue." Amy's use of magic turns local musician Todd into a woman after he cruelly rejects her crush on him and then spreads awful rumors about her former savior Buffy for refusing his advances, giving her rapid Broken Pedestal feelings toward Todd. Buffy convinces Amy to lift the curse by saying that doing that kind of thing temporarily is just a (admittedly a bit extreme) prank, but leaving him like that would make her as callous as him.

    Todd

Todd Dahl

A slimy musician who has an unwarranted crush on Buffy.

    Pepper

Pepper Roback

A Fish Tank waitress who appears in Immortal.
  • Friend to All Children: She has wanted to be a teacher for a long time and, following the end of that dream, she settles for being a library reading volunteer, which is one of the only things that gives her joy.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She is killed by a body-swapping vampire at the end of her first scene.
  • World-Weary Waitress: She has spent years as a waitress at a job she hates, unsuccessfully trying to save money for college, and has a "hard" look to her and a sense of depression about her life.

@ Buffy the Vampire Slayer

  • In Immortal, it's also a Tear Jerker moment, but a We Hardly Knew Ye victim has a nice moment of reflecting on what a happy reading session she just took part in at the library.

@ Buffy the Vampire Slayer

  • The final flashback scene in "The Hollow" has Angelus leading about thirty other vampires armed with melee weapons against a vampire-eating Eldritch Abomination while making a Rousing Speech about reclaiming the night.
  • When Buffy and Angel rough up Tergazzi, a demon informant, for information, Queenie, his human girlfriend, gives them a prolonged What the Hell, Hero? rant about how he has been nothing but helpful to them so far and that the Slayer and her vampire companion have no right to interrupt their privacy. She finishes by saying that if they "lay one more hand on my little demon, [then] I'm gonna back your ass from here back to Vegas." She quickly folds when she sees Angel's Game Face, but it's a good effort while it lasts.

@ Buffy the Vampire Slayer

  • Even detractors of Night of the Living Rerun frequently praise Puritan Slayer Samantha Kane, and some also enjoy the scenes of Occult Detective duo Lora and Rick Church.
  • Portal Through Time:
    • Time-traveling vampire assassins Lucien and Victor are among the best novel villains for some fans.
    • Quirky Reasonable Authority Figure King Gilgamesh makes a huge impression in just a few pages.
    • The two mentioned but unseen Slayers (Slayer turned vampire Kafara and an unnamed Combat Pragmatist) from alternate timelines where Buffy was never chosen and Liam, the Watcher of the Combat Pragmatist, are still hugely interesting and memorable for the adventures and traits they are described as having.
  • The version of Baba Yaga seen in The Deathless is seen as an interesting take on the old folklore character.

@ Nick Carter

  • Vanilla Protagonist: Given how Nick has a rather far-fetched background, but his methods and personality frequently change to reflect whatever the current popular trends are, some fans feel that Nick can be overshadowed at times, in concept, execution, or both, by many people in both his Rogues Gallery (Dr. Quartz, the lost tribe in the Himalayas, Zanoni the Woman Wizard, Dazar the Arch Fiend, Scylla the Sea Robber, Praxatel of the Iron Arm, Gaston Dupont, etc.) and his rotating cast of sidekicks (cowboy Chick Carter, Badass Bookworm Ten-Ichi and Ida Jones, Master of Disguise Adelina, etc.).

@ Self-Made Lie

  • The Cinderella Murder: Actress Madison brags about earning her first and greatest role with a killer audition, but leaves out how she blackmailed the director by threatening to falsely implicate him in a murder that took place near his house.

@ Furiosa settlements

Throughout the film, it only takes Furiosa a few seconds to offhandedly dispatch him in the final chase.
  • Dumb Muscle: His brawniness is not matched with cunning, as shown when he fires a flare gun into the ground while unsure what it does.

@ Chosen

  • Evil Old Folks: He is about eighty and quick to see Jesus as a threat that must be destroyed.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He wants to pit Jesus against the Romans rather than have the Pharisees go after him themselves and look weak or unworthy of respect in front of the occupation force.
