This thread is for tropers who have trouble with English and would like some help with the crazy grammar of this crazy language.

Write down what you wish to edit on the wiki. If you have been suspended from editing, another troper might be kind enough to edit for you after your suggestions have been corrected.

The thread is for help and feedback on your own suggested edits.

If you want help correcting other people's edits (e.g., if you find a page which seems to have grammar problems but want a second opinion, or you don't feel able to fix it by yourself) then that's off-topic here, but we have a separate Grammar Police cleanup thread that can provide assistance.

On July 24th 2023, the moderator Synchronicity told you you needed to spend some time here having your work proofread until you stop making major English errors.

^ All of these are Zero Context Examples because they don't say how the example fits the trope, they just claim that they do. Please read Zero-Context Example for more information.

^ Also, the first two examples don't make any sense.

^ I have formatted these properly by putting an asterisk at the beginning of each one.

Kurtz Baratier (Kurt Baratier) Voiced by: Genki Okawa (Japanese); James Kot (English)

  • Lean and Mean: He was mean at the beginning, but later he becomes nicer, like Kyoya and Kai, the previous gang leader in the previous Bayblade anime.
  • Gang of Bullies: Like Kyoya and Kai. He was the leader of a gang before, but in the underground.

Mitsuri Kanroji Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese), Kira Buckland (English)

  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Her whisper to Tanjiro makes him get nosebleeds, but she did not mean to. She just wanted Tanjiro to know there was a secret weapon in the village that could make him stronger. When she rushes over Tanjiro in tears, Tanjiro reminds her that her breasts were spilling out from her bathrobe.

Kamen rider Geats

  • Shout-Out: The Desire Driver. The Perfecter Core of the driver resembles the Drive Bay of the Sengoku Driver, as they can set a device in it; The Torus Reactor of the Driver resembles the Progrise Reactor of the Hiden Zero-One Driver; The function of the Driver resembles the Ziku Driver, as they can insert the Transformation Trinket on both sides and can press the top button of the Driver to unlock and rotate.

  • One True Pairing: Isobel and Josie are easily the most popular pairing, due to their well developed romance and the chemistry between their actresses. Its next to impossible to find a fan who doesn't ship them or ships them with anyone else.

@ Watchers Slayers

@ Babylon Five Earth Alliance

    General Smits
Played by: Lewis Arquette
One of Sheridan's superiors at the onset of the Earth Civil War.
  • The Brigadier: He is a high-ranking headquarters soldier who has the visage of a likely combat veteran, gives orders to the high-ranking Sheridan, and makes those orders reasonable ones.
  • Internal Reformist: He officially remains loyal to President Clark during the Earth Civil War and tells Sheridan to do the same, but he words his orders in a way designed to make Sheridan defy Clark, indicating that he is trying to undermine Clark from within.
  • No Full Name Given: His first name is unknown.
  • Old Soldier: He is an aging general who looks like he's probably been a professional soldier for about forty years.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He is never seen again after his first and only scene, where he gives Sheridan a pretext for disobeying President Clark, which partially leads to Babylon 5 later siding against Clark in the civil war.

    Major Ed Ryan
Played by: Bruce McGill
General Hague's adjutant.
  • Majorly Awesome: He is a major who is first seen keeping a cool head during the middle of a space battle and giving orders that lead to his opponent's destruction.
  • Martial Pacifist: At least toward fellow Earthforce soldiers on the other side, as he won't fire on them unless it's the only way to keep them from killing him and his allies.
  • Nice Guy: He is polite to his allies and treats killing fellow Earthforce enemies as a sad affair.
  • Put on a Bus: He departs Babylon Five to participate in other theaters of the war and is never seen again.
  • You Are in Command Now: He takes over General Hague's resistance faction after Hague's death.

    PFC Elizabeth "Dodger" Durman
Played by: Marie Marshall
Part of a unit of infantry shock troops, Dodger and her comrades are briefly quartered on Babylon 5 in season 2, during which time she develops a relationship with Garibaldi.
  • Action Girl: She is a fierce hand-to-hand combatant and dies offscreen in a ferocious firefight where she seems to have advanced a ways.
  • Back from the Dead: Despite dying in her debut episode, she temporarily returns to life three seasons later during a mystical Brakiri ceremony.
  • Bully Hunter: She is introduced defending Delenn from a group of racist fellow soldiers who she happily engages in a brawl with.
  • But Now I Must Go: When her temporary resurrection is coming to an end, she says goodbye to Garibaldi and calmly walks out of the room so he doesn't have to see her fade away.
  • Ethical Slut: She wants quick and physical relationships between brushes with death, but does care about her boyfriend's feelings and is honest with them.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: She describes herself as agnostic even after coming back from the dead, although she's willing to discuss the matter in depth.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She spends a lot of her second episode not wearing pants and also has a Sexy Silhouette scene while changing.
  • The Lost Lenore: She and Garibaldi never consummate their relationship, but he seems to feel her loss deeply and is happy to see her spirit again years later.
  • Smarter Than You Look: She seems like a gruff, career military ladette, but she is good at telling when her superiors are keeping things from her and enjoys replacing the lyrics from "The Yellow Rose of Texas" with lines from Emily Dickinson poems.

@ Tomboy with a Girly Streak

  • Small Soldiers: Christy rides a moped, listens to Led Zeppelin, sneaks out of her house, wears fairly gender-neutral sweaters and jeans, and is embarrassed about having a doll collection, but she is seen attentively arranging a doll case in one scene and is apparently a baton twirler.

@ The Golden Age

  • Little is said about Thompson's political policies (besides his anti-communism) and why they are simultaneously appealing to both patriotic, idealistic, and intelligent superheroes and his covert Nazi backers. His views on race could have been used to bring Amazing Man (the first chronological black superhero) into the story, which would have been interesting given how he was once a pawn of Humanite.

@ Spy School

  • Cuteness Proximity: In Spy School Goes North, Ben and Erica can’t help notice the adorableness of various seal and otter families in a fjord that they are fleeing through, and work hard to make sure that they don’t cause the heat-seeking torpedoes that are fired at them to hurt any of those animals.

    • Implausible Hair Color: During the trailer, an unnamed character with bright pink hair appears. However, it's quite clear from her appearance she's not exactly human, either being a robot or some kind of cyborg.

YMMV.Yellow Submarine:

  • What Do You Mean, It Wasn't Made on Drugs?: Between the colorful Deranged Animation, the trippy designs, the lack of a cohesive narrative, and the Beatles' songs in the film being their more psychedelic tracks, it's little wonder that the film is often described as being an animated film on acid. Despite this, animation director and character designer Heinz Edelmann has stated that he had never used any illegal drugs.

YMMV.Sesame Street:

  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception:
    • Despite it being his name, Cookie Monster does not only eat cookies, and suggesting that he only eats them (or calling him things like "Veggie Monster" whenever he eats veggies) will easily enrage fans. He is an Extreme Omnivore who will eat just about anything, including non foods like machinery, tables, computers, cars, and even the Sesame Street sign itself. Cookies are just his Trademark Favorite Food.
    • Jim Henson did not create the show. Sesame Street is the brainchild of Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett. In fact, Henson reportedly didn't join Sesame Street's production until very late in production (as in, several months before the show's premiere). He did create and own the Muppet characters that populate the show, but even then, they were handed over to the show's owners after his death in 1990. Suggesting that Sesame Street is created by Henson will annoy both Sesame Street and Muppet fans.
    • Kermit the Frog is not a Sesame Street character. He predates Sesame Street by over a decade (having been created for Sam and Friends in 1955) and even in the show's early seasons, he was not much more than an semi-reoccurring Guest Star rather than a core part of Sesame Street's cast of Muppets (and by The Muppet Show, his appearances would become far less frequent). Suggesting that he is a character made for the show is a good way to greatly anger Muppet fans.

Trivia.Sesame Street:
Trivia.Revolver Beatles Album
  • What Could Have Been: The early work tapes of "Yellow Submarine" sung by John Lennon featured on the Super Deluxe rerelease of "Revolver" reveal the song was originally starkly different early on, with the song originally being conceptualized by Lennon as a dark and melancholy ballad evocative of Lennon's later solo work, a far cry from the cheerful and upbeat children's song sung by Ringo Starr.

For Dry Docking:

  • Fate: The Winx Saga: On sites like Tumblr and AO3, the headmistress of Alfea, Farah Dowling, has a large group fans (both male and female) who refuse to ship her with anyone mainly so that they write fanfics where she ends up with their Author Avatar instead. This is mainly due to Farah being played by the beautiful Eve Best.

For Live-Action TV:

  • Fate: The Winx Saga: Especially on sites like AO3, Farah Dowling is shipped with almost every other character in the show, including her students. Her most popular ship is with Saul Silva, but she has also been shipped with Queen Luna, Ben Harvey, Rose Harvey, Rosalind, Andreas, and the entirity of the Winx Suite (most notably Bloom). That is not even getting into the OCs and Author Avatars she has been paired with.

For FanPreferredCouple.Live Action TV:

  • Fate: The Winx Saga: Musa is canonically in a relationship with Sam, but, while that has its fans, it is far more popular in the fandom to pair her with Riven, due to many feeling that she has better chemistry with Riven. The fact that in the original cartoon, Musa and Riven were an actual couple helps as well.

Any corrections?

Somethings I'd like to add to Looney Tunes Cartoons...

  • Bomb Whistle: This is common when characters or objects fall from a great height, similar to the classic Looney Tunes shorts, except rather than Treg Brown's classic "airy" falling whistle sound, Hanna-Barbera's "shell screaming whine down" Stock Sound Effect is typically used (similar to the Warner Bros. - Seven Arts era of Looney Tunes).

  • Stock Sound Effects:
    • Even though several classic Warner Bros. sound effects are used a lot, not all of them are featured (a notable absence is Treg Brown's classic "large junk crashes", replaced with newer realistic crashing sounds presumably created for the series).
    • There are also several Disney and Hanna-Barbera sounds and some additional sound effects that tend to make the series sound more like a 1990s Nicktoon than classic Looney Tunes (and the supervising sound editor has worked on such shows, like Rocko's Modern Life and The Angry Beavers, both of which also used WB's sounds quite a bit.)
    • However, the Hanna-Barbera sound effects do fit with "Crumb and Get It", given the Seven Arts era of Looney Tunes (that the short was parodying) also used them (especially the "shell screaming whine down" when someone or something falls from a great height).

Some tropes fro Fright Krewe

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Season 1 ends with Belial back at his full power and in proces of summoning new demonic minion to defeat the kids.
  • The Dreaded: Mere mention of Belial’s name has other supernatural inhabitants of New Orleans vary and even horror obsessed Soleil is left frigthened by encouter with him.
  • Never My Fault: Mayor Furst blames vampires and rougarous for death of his wife because they refused to turn her after car accident because there were to many people on street for them to stay hidden. He completely ignored his wife only died because of him passing on red light, resulting in the car crash.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Our heroes are girl with fetish for scary things descended from Voodoo Queen who sealed Big Bad, her former best friend who is now popular girl dating mayor’s son who becomes outcast after her new powers cause her to injure member of dance club, unpopular new kid whose aunt is Voodoo priestess who spend his childhood living in the swamp, quiet kid from family of musicians who is taken care by his older brother because their parents are on a tour, and friendly jock.

YMMV.Adventure Time Fionna And Cake

  • He Really Can Act: Tom Kenny's performance as Simon was already praised by fans and critics in Adventure Time, but it is agreed that this is one of the best voice acting performances to date, pulling off a mature and heartwrenching performance that perfectly sells Simon's loneliness, depression over losing Betty, and being a Stranger in a Familiar Land. Kenny was not kidding when he said this was the most emotional performance he had ever done.

YMMV.Haunted Mansion 2023:

  • Critical Dissonance: If Rotten Tomatoes is anything to go by, audiences were kinder to the film than critics were, as the audience rating is 79% (counting all audiences), while the Tomatometer score is 38%.

Trivia.The Beatles 1965

  • Approval of God: While the rest of the Beatles hated the cartoon at the time due to its poor quality, George Harrison stated in a 1999 interview that he had always liked the cartoon, albeit in a So Bad, It's Good way. John Lennon has also admitted in a 1972 interview that the cartoon grew on him over time.
  • Bury Your Art: Despite having owned the show since the '90s, Apple Corps (the owner of the Beatles) seems to hold this attitude towards it, as it has not released the show on any home media and only barely acknowledges the show in a historical sense.
  • Disowned Adaptation: Aside from George Harrison — who had always liked the cartoon in a So Bad, It's Good sense — The Beatles themselves hated the cartoon at the time due to its poor quality and how they're depicted in it. Their distaste for it is a big part of why they distanced themselves from Yellow Submarine (which had many of the same people from the cartoon involved) for most of its production. That said, John Lennon would admit in a 1972 interview that the cartoon grew on him over time.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The show has not seen any official rerelease on home media, meaning your best chance of seeing the cartoon is through bootleg recordings on YouTube or elsewhere.
