How's this?

  • Spanner in the Works: Despite their rivalry, Law demonstrates admirable bravery by rescuing Luffy during the intense battle at Marineford. This selfless action not only solidified their bond but also granted Law the ability to combat sinister schemes with the same determination and vigor as Luffy.

    • Their resulting alliance in Punk Hazard destroys many villains' ongoing plans. This not only derailed Doflamingo's 10-year rule but also devastates Big Mom's, Shogun Orochi's, and Kaido's plans.
    • Without the trip to Dressrosa, Big Mom would not have been able to capture Sanji. Luffy's brave rescue mission not only helped save Sanji, but also enhanced his reputation as a potential Emperor. Luffy's actions caused significant harm to Charlotte's reputation, ultimately leading to her downfall in Wano.
    • In Punk Hazard, Orochi and Kaido's adversaries are present. While rescuing Kin'emon and Momonosuke, they rejuvenate Wano's rebellion against the oppressive Orochi. Momo is revealed to be Oden's son, the scribe of the Roger Pirates. They also unintentionally save Zou from Jack's destruction because Kin'emon and Momo declare it their destination. The red Poneglyph in Zou provides the crucial clue to the Laugh Tale route. It's fair to say that Luffy and Law's journey and Wano's resistance would have failed if he hadn't decide to venture onto the perilous island to respond to the distress call.

"Plus isn't it present tense?"

Since it's referring to something that occurred in the past, it's in past tense.

One Piece:

  • Boa Hancock:
    • Accidental Hero: In a manner of speaking. During the Egghead Arc, Hancock's Seraphim clone S-Snake petrifies some of Luffy's crew members and kills one of Dr. Vegapunk's Satellites. Once Luffy sees S-Snake he mistakes her for the original Hancock in spite of the physical differences he begs her to undo the petrification. Turns out Hancock's Seraphim clone inherited her feelings for Luffy and manages to break away from York's orders to kill the Straw Hats and returns everyone back to normal. So, in a way, Hancock's feelings are what saved Luffy and the crew from her clone.
    • Break the Haughty: Hancock is renowned for being vain, arrogant and prideful, justifying anything she does that she can do because she's beautiful. However, she has years of being a terrible person for years as Empress, and once the Warlord system is abolished the Marines and the Blackbeard Pirates target her and her island. She fights off the Marines and Blackbeard Pirates to protect her people but is easily defeated by Blackbeard once he nullifies her powers and chokes the life out of her in front of her people. She is saved by the timely arrival of Rayleigh and manages to broker a peace between the three parties to leave. By the time the ordeal is over Hancock's pride took a heavy blow. She almost died at the hands of Blackbeard and could do nothing to stop him, was humiliated in front of her people being utterly helpless, her home was destroyed and several of her fellow Kuja's were wounded or even killed. Worse is that all her efforts were for nothing, as Rayleigh, and outsider, is the sole reason she and her people are saved, something Hancock herself doesn't deny. Worse is that Elder Nyon, her adopted mother, bluntly states she thought they all were going to die had Rayleigh not show up in front of her adopted daughter. Once everyone is gone, Hancock is wounded, scarred, and can do nothing but rest herself on Rayleigh's leg trying to figure out what to do next other than leaving her home to reunite with Luffy.
    • Jerkass Façade: Deconstructed. Hancock acts like a selfish and cruel woman in front of her people in an attempt to appear strong and confident to reassure her people that they are safe. However, she acted like this out of fear of being taken advantage of again due to her years as a slave. Her true self is a scared and vulnerable woman who is terrified at the thought of her people knowing their current Empress was a slave and tarnishing the reputation of the Kuja. As acting like this for years ended up causing the facade to become a real part of her personality. Elder Nyon even comments on this, fearing that her own adopted daughter had truly become cold as ice up until she finally drops her guard after falling in love with Luffy.
    • The Power of Love:
      • Hancock uses the power of love as a weapon and becomes a victim to it. She uses her beauty and the power of her Mero-Mero no Mi (Love Love Fruit) to make anyone turn to stone just for lusting after her. Luffy's obliviousness to her looks, and later her love for him, keep him from turning to stone.
      • Hancock's love for Luffy is so strong that initially it makes her feverish and physically ill at the thought of parting ways with him. Elder Nyon recognizes it as Love Sickness, and recounts that several Empresses of Amazon Lily have died to it because they suppressed their own emotions, with herself and a scant few others surviving by virtue of embracing the love they felt and pursuing the target of their affections. Notably, Hancock's symptoms vanish the instant Luffy asks to speak with her, and disappear permanently after she becomes consciously aware of her own feelings.
Elder Nyon: Love is always a hurricane!
      • Her love for Luffy ends up overriding her Seraphim clone S-Snake's control over York and obeys Luffy's request to return his crew members back to normal. Even Dr. Vegapunk was shocked by this as he never programmed her to behave this way.
    • Spanner in the Works: During the Egghead Arc, Hancock's Serphim clone, S-Snake, ends up gaining feelings for Luffy just like Hancock herself. It's later revealed her clone inherited Hancock's love for Luffy and overrides York's control to kill the Straw Hats. If not for Hancock's love for Luffy, S-Snake would have never broken free from York's commands.

Yeah, probably should've clarified that better.

YMMV.Hilda

  • Common Knowledge (revision): The twin-tailed girl who torments David in "The Nightmare Spirit" is not named "Marra". "Marra" is the name of her species, not her actual name. Like with most of the Marra, her name is unconfirmed.

YMMV.Wario Land 4

  • Fans Prefer the New Her: While her good ending design is her canon design (being the design depicted in promotional artwork and in the game's opening), many fans vastly prefer her non-canon Golden Ending design instead due to her Bifauxnen-like appearance being very attractive and making her stand out greatly from the other Mario series princesses.

YMMV.Thomas And The Magic Railroad

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Thomas and the Magic Railroad had a lot going against it from the very beginning. As popular as Thomas & Friends was, there was little general interest in a theatrical film starring Thomas the Tank Engine, with films based on properties aimed at children historically doing awful at the box office. Even without that going against it, those who might've been interested in the film were turned off by the focus on new human characters over the familiar engine characters and the shoehorning of magical and fantasy elements into a work that was popular due to its gritty realism, with both aspects clashing horribly with the show's pre-established elements and setting, creating a very messy and incoherent narrative (director's cut or not). All in all, the film was a massive flop at the box office, only making $19.7 million on a $19 million budget.

Thanks you

@ Everest (2002)

  • Acrofatic: Plump Sherpa Babu is a tireless worker who can move at amazing speeds in a crisis.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Sammi is constantly zoned out listening to rock-and-roll on her Walkman, which once causes her to not realize that an avalanche has breezed through the base camp until several minutes later.
  • What a Piece of Junk: In Book 2, the expedition briefly travels in a The Korean War surplus helicopter with visible duct tape repairs. Contrary to Tilt's snide prediction, it does actually manage to lift off and take them to their destination.

@ Everest (2002)

  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: The Training from Hell necessary to even attempt the summit is grimly described, as is the danger of mountaineering, the fact that many Everest expeditions are forced to turn back before the summit, the uncomfortable camping conditions, and how expeditions to Mount Everest can bring out the worst in people due to all the corporate glitz involved, with Cap even wondering Was It Really Worth It?. However, the sense of boldness and enthusiasm of climbers like Dominic can still be infectious.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Tilt's movies being VCRs, the camp's VCR player being viewed as a luxury item, Sammy using a Walkman, the lack of mention of climate change affecting the mountains, and the novelty of kids climbing Mount Everest all emphasize the pre-2010's setting.

@ Everest (2002)

The Contest

  • Tilt's Establishing Character Moment is leapfrogging over Dominic during the middle of a run while they're both wearing full packs. Dick move or not, it's pretty impressive.
  • Dominic taking off at a running start to reach a good handhold for climbing "the mushroom", the boulder that no one else at camp could climb. This is what seals his place on the expedition when Cap came close to cutting him three times earlier.
  • Dominic and Cap rescue an injured Brynn from a crevasse and use their ice axes to make a wide enough hole just minutes before the rescue window would have ended.

The Climb

  • Pemba Babu saves Sammi's life when she falls the height of a five-story building by bumping into her at just the right moment (trying to catch her would just crush him) to divert the momentum of the fall and turn a fatal landing into a mere bruising one.
  • When Ethan Zaph is dangling from a cliff, Tillt, a fourteen-year-old, pulls him part of the way up singlehandedly.
  • Dominic gets an injured Nestor down the mountain in time to get him medical attention, even after they run out of rope, by sliding down the mountain slope while hanging onto Nestor as if they were tobogganing.

The Summit

  • After Sammi's boyfriend dumps her through email, she takes the picture of the two of them that he'd asked her to put on the summit, tears out his half of the picture, and makes it into a paper airplane.

@ Dive (2003) The Dive Trilogy (The Discovery, The Deep, and The Danger) is a middle-grade suspense series written by Gordon Korman in 2003. Like his earlier Everest Trilogy, the book follows four kids forming a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits and going somewhere few people have gone before. Kaz, Star, Dante, and Adrianna apply for a summer internship of diving in the Caribbean and are baffled at being chosen out of thousands of applicants. Star is graceful in the water but has cerebral palsy that hampers her movements on land, and the other three have perhaps a dozen prior dives between them. It becomes clear that they have been selected by a trio of mysterious so-called scientists who don't want expert divers snooping around a shady treasure hunt that ultimately leads to at least one murder, although the four teens set out to make the treasure hunters sorry for their choice of patsies and find the treasure themselves. There is also a series of flashbacks revealing how the treasure came to its resting place. These scenes are shown through the POV of Samuel Higgins, a fifteenth-century orphan who becomes the terrified cabin boy of a mass-murdering privateer named James Blade.

The series has no relation to DIVE!!

Tropes in the trilogy

  • Artistic License – History: Captain Vanover tells the kids about a diver named Mel Fisher who is still in court fighting over the rights to the treasure he found aboard two Spanish Galleons off the coast of Florida. Fisher was a real person, but the trilogy was written in 2003, and Fisher won his court case in 1982 and died in 1998.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Marina is the only one of the scientists who acts consistently welcoming and caring toward the divers, which sometimes causes them to forget that she's still manipulating them, dynamiting coral reefs, and trying to steal sunken treasure just like her partners. She is also willing to kill for the treasure, while her partners have a Heel–Face Turn rather than do the same.
  • Cool Uncle: Adrianna and her brother spend most summers with their archaeologist uncle, who has imparted a lot of knowledge to them, while their parents constantly neglect them. However, he only had one spot available for his latest trip and took Adrianna's brother, causing her to apply for the Caribbean expedition.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Expressing concern for Star or wondering if she can keep up with the others due to her disability infuriates her and makes her double her efforts.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Captain Vanover, who helps the kids with both diving and figuring out the lay of the land, is killed by Marina's sabotage at the end of The Deep.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: When the kids tell Dr. Gallagher that Cutter and his team are hunting treasure under suspicious circumstances rather than taking sonar readings, Gallagher says that he just runs the institute and doesn't have oversight over the various project teams who visit there, then sends them away without any signs of concern.
  • A Taste of the Lash: Blade carries a whip everywhere with him and loves using it on his crewmen at the slightest excuse.
  • Threatening Shark: Zigzagged. When Kaz sees a shark on his first dive, he panics, stabs it, and is promptly rebuked for doing so, with Captain Vanover lambasting Jaws for creating a negative stereotype of animals who will swim past divers without a moment of aggression unless there's already blood in the water. However, whenever there is blood in the water, an eighteen-foot tiger shark nicknamed Clarence is willing to hungrily lunge at the heroes while displaying a wide maw of teeth.

@ The Choices That Make Us

  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Junior Death Eater Regulus is on better terms with several of the Order of the Phoenix-affiliated kids than Harry ever was with Draco and his cronies. They occasionally chat together at mealtimes or while working on spells and are guarded but affable and trying to understand each other better. However, the tension is still there, such as when Regulus tells Gladys that she'd better not put off any conversations she wants to have with her grandmother Dorcas Meadows, due to Dorcas being on the Death Eaters' radar for her Order of the Phoenix work.
  • Have You Told Anyone Else?: In Defiant Until the End, when the Potters, Remus, Edgar Bones, and several other Order of the Phoenix members learn that Barty Crouch Jr. is a Death Eater when they clash during a mission into werewolf territory, Mrs. Crouch enchants James to forget about her son's allegiance, and then asks him to tell her who else knows so that she can alter their memories as well. James tells her that he has taken a magical oath not to reveal the names of Dumbledore's followers, and Mrs. Crouch acknowledges this will keep him from revealing the names, but uses her spell to make him go and erase all of those memories himself without knowing who he will visit.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: Regulus and Bellatrix kill Alphard Black by using the Imperius curse to make him take a lethal amount of his drug stash.

@ Pursued Protagonist

Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars begins with Jack, the eponymous group’s leader, jumping into the Thames in a failed effort to escape a kidnapper.

@ Harry Potter - Gryffindor

Other Gryffindor Quidditch players and applicants

Several other teenagers try out for the Quidditch team, some successfully, during the fifth and sixth books.

  • Butt-Monkey:
    • Most mentions of Jack Sloper and Andrew Kirke emphasize their incompetence as Beaters and neither get any special favors when Harry holds tryouts for their positions the next year.
    • Downplayed with Demelza Robins, who is a skilled member of the 1996 team but gets constantly yelled at by Ron during his bad moods and gets a bloody nose during practice.
  • Extracurricular Enthusiast: Vicky Frobisher is part of several clubs and tries out for the keeper position, only losing it to Rob (who performed less well than her) because Vicky admits she will prioritize the Charms Club over the team in the event of scheduling conflicts.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Jimmy Peakes is a short young man who is nonetheless broad-chested, while Ritchie Coyote is weedy-looking but has a good aim for hitting bludgers. Peakes also seeks to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts before being turned away due to his youth.
  • Quit Your Whining: Angelina Johnson fails to select Geoffrey Hopper for the 1995 team due to his constant complaining.

@ Dive (2003)

  • Back-Alley Doctor: In the flashback scenes, wounded privateers are left to the not-so tender care of York the barber/dentist/sea doctor, a menacing figure whose main treatments seem to be amputations and maggot therapy.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Iggy Ocasek is a brilliant tinkerer and marine biologist, but he has no social skills and is introduced using a blowtorch and a mollusk shell to pop popcorn.
  • Burial at Sea: After Caltain Vancover drowns and the other characters go to a lot of trouble to recover his body for his family, it turns out that he wanted to buried at sea anyway.
  • Disability Superpower: Being color blind makes it difficult for Dante to take underwater photos at the right lighting, but it also keeps him from being distracted by how coral encased manmade objects are the same color as real coral and lets him notice when the texture is different from surrounding objects.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Captain Blade kills all of the prisoners from the Spanish galleon for little more reason than one of them throwing his gem-encrusted whip overboard in an effort to defend his Captain against Blade’s abuse.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: In the penultimate flashback, Captain Blade murders the crew of the Spanish galleon and sets it on fire for good measure once he has moved the treasure to his own ship. He missed at least one Spanish sailor hiding below deck, and as the galleon burns, the Spaniard hurls a firebomb at the Griffin, which sets off a powder explosion and sends Blade and most of his crew to the bottom of the sea.
  • Funny Foreigner: Downplayed with Menasce Gérard (aka English), the grouchy dive guide who is descended from native Caribbean tribes, French settlers, and one English castaway many generations back. His frustration at the hands of his young charges provides a lot of humor, but is also justified due to their dangerous inexperience, with English coming across as a Hyper-Competent Sidekick who saves their lives several times and also gets a lot more nuanced and approachable as time goes by.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: In the Backstory Kaz quit playing hockey, after previously devoting every waking moment to the sport, due to the guilt that came with accidentally paralyzing another player. When his father and sports agent asked what else he wanted to do with his life, he came up blank and said he was interested in fish (leading to his applying for a diving internship) just because he was looking at a fish tank across the room.
  • Running Gag: Each book has a lot least one scene where English calls the protagonists "American teenagers" and Kaz interjects that he is Canadian.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • In the flashbacks, Captain Blade is willing to strike or whip the thirteen-year-old Samuel at the slightest provocation and also is willing to murder young Spanish prisoners. One of his men, York, also backhands Samuel for questioning Blade in one scene, although this is portrayed as a Cruel to Be Kind moment that keeps Blade from expressing his displeasure himself by whipping Samuel.
    • Before going to sea, Samuel is kidnapped by a chimney sweep who sends dozens of kids up chimneys as slave laborers and is shocked when Samuel actually survives long enough to get too big to fit into chimneys anymore.
    • Marina is willing to endanger the four teenaged interns over the treasure.

@ Silo

  • Being Evil Sucks: During a private confrontation with Jules, he admits that he constantly considers quitting his job as the secret tyrant of the Silo, is aware that things going against his plans can be a good thing, and feels that every life has value, but that he feels obligated to do the things he does to keep everyone alive.

    Lukas

Lukas Kyle

Played By: Avi Nash
A computer worker who befriends and assists Juliette. He is an amateur astronomer.
  • Asian and Nerdy: He is an Asian computer technician who has made a star map.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: In a surprising departure from the books, he ends season 1 by being sent to the mines for ten years.

@ The King Nobody Wanted

  • When Alester Florent asks Garth Tyrell to be a Character Witness at his trial, Garth deliberately lets out a loud fart.
  • Tytos describes how his father chose their family name after being ennobled when he found the coat-of-arms of an extinct house named Clegane that showed a man wielding a decidedly Phallic Weapon. Tytos's father adopted the name on the spot, declaring that "a name so bold must endure." Tytos uses a few awkward euphemisms while recounting the story to his free-riders decades later, and they find the whole thing hilarious.
  • Rys Chelsted spends his Establishing Character Moment oozing with Gentleman Snarker quips, such as saying that if Stannis doesn't want an Honest Advisor like him and wants a Professional Butt-Kisser instead, then "say the word and I will go find you one. They are about King's Landing in great abundance."
  • There is some Black Comedy in Impoverished Patrician Zor Alexi describing how meaningless his various titles are (eg. being the lord of Silver Hall doesn't mean much when said estate "has been stripped of silver and indeed, of much of the hall").

Thanks, Arivne.

WesternAnimation.Coraline:

  • Foreshadowing: In the scene of him playing the piano for Coraline, the Other Father is playing the keys wrong, with the song he's playing and his actual piano playing not matching up (he is effectively just smashing the piano), subtly foreshadowing that not everything is as it seems.

WesternAnimation.Hilda:

  • Precision F-Strike: Downplayed in "The Ghost" (this is a kids' show after all). After things fall apart with Hilda, David, and Frida at the end, as the former two are leaving Frida's, David tells Frida that "she could learn to tidy her own flipping room". "Flipping" being used as a G-rated stand-in for the F-Bomb in this case.

Trivia.Chicken Run Dawn Of The Nugget:
  • Saved from Development Hell: A sequel has been planned by Aardman as far back as the original film's development, with there originally being plans to include a Sequel Hook in the original film showing a second chicken run being built, which ended up being cut late in production due to Aardman not being sure at the time if a sequel would be made. It wouldn't be until 2018, 18 years after the film's release, that the sequel would finally happen and be formally announced by Netflix, with it being released in 2023.

Characters/A Song Of Ice And Fire House Baratheon of King's Landing: Myrcella Baratheon: Morality Chain: Despite the Martells's murderous hatred of her family including the Dornish prince Doran, not one of the Martells ever suggest harming her despite their ample opportunities to do so and her lack of agency as a 10 years old girl. Arianne even hatched the Queenmaker scheme to crowning her queen in place of her younger brother Tommen. This is severely deconstructed by the end of the Queenmaker storyline, with her being caught in the crossfire and severely injured with a huge scar on the side of her face and one of her ears cut off. The Martells also casually discuss killing her beloved younger brother Tommen, something which would probably severely upset Myrcella, showing that even if the Martells do not murder her on sight, they still capable of some very bad actions that would make her life miserable.

Bloons Tower Defense: Trivia

  • Dummied Out:
    • The first game has an unused tower called the "Spikey Ball Tower", which is a tower that shoots spiky balls in all four cardinal directions. The only graphic this tower has is a green circle serving as a placeholder. The placeholder is also in present the second, third and fourth game's files.
    • Bloons Tower Defense 5 has unused graphics for a pile of monkeys, a spider, a Venus flytrap and Super Monkey Junior from Bloons Super Monkey 2.
  • Refitted for Sequel: The idea of a tower shotting spiky balls was planned since the the first game, which has an unused tower called "Spikey Ball Tower". It took until the third game for players to be able to use a tower that shoots spiky balls with the Spike-o-pult.

Warcraft: Characters (WC 2 Mage / Death Knight)

  • Animate Dead: Death Knights can bring dead units back alive as skeleton soldiers.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • If a Mage uses the Polymorph spell on a Demolition Squad or Goblin Sappers unit, it will turn into a single critter, even though they are respectively two and three characters as a single unit.
    • The Death Knights' Raise Dead spell will turn any corpse into a generic Orc skeleton, even if the corpse was a human, elf, troll or ogre.

Gaston Lagaffe: Characters (Bertrand Labévue)

  • Related in the Adaptation: Several translations make him Gaston's cousin, even though they aren't related in any way in the original French version.
