some tropes

for Usopp

  • His Own Worst Enemy: Usopp's main obstacles towards his dream to become a brave warrior of the sea are his own insecurities and his cowardice, which, at least at first, prevent him from fighting at his best. At the beginning of every fight, Usopp attempts to flee, sometimes even leaving his own comrades behind, but always manages to come back and fight properly in the end. His own self-esteem issues reach a turning point in the Water 7 arc, where, after the crew decides to get rid of the Going Merry because is beyond repair, Usopp fears he might be the next one to be left behind because he's the weakest.
  • Honor Before Reason: Inverted. While saving Kin'emon, who wishes to die honorably as a way to follow the samurai bushido code, Usopp calls him out on this attitude, saying that he would rather flee and survive at any cost rather than dying because of some made-up rules. This line of thought is also the closest the Wano arc gives as a counterpoint to the philosophy of Kaido, the main villain of the arc, about the glory in death.
  • Humble Hero: Zigzagged. Usopp usually boasts about made up feats and seemingly paints himself as a legendary warrior, but in truth he's very aware of his limits and fears. Usopp drops his biggest fears in the Dressrosa Arc when, for the first time in the story, he admits being a liar and boasts to the Tontattas that he will became their legendary hero.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: While at Greenstone, Usopp ends up extremely fat but, afer two years of training, he returns as thin as before, even if a bit more muscular.

Thank you once again, Arivne.

@ Meg Langslow Mysteries

  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Dr. Blake's first appearance mentions he had a legitimate son and grandson who died before he learned of Mr. Langslow's existence and became a part of Meg's family. This could have been an interesting recurring aspect of his character, but neither he, Meg, her dad, nor anyone else in the family ever seems to reflect on those dead relatives.
    • Taking a close look at the Pruitts' adjustment to their fall from grace after Randall becomes mayor (ending their century-long period of being able to claim that I Own This Town) could have been an interesting storyline. Unfortunately, it's barely brought up except in the book right after the one where they lose power, with the Pruitts being a mostly offscreen but apparently sullen interchangeable mass besides one suspect working a Fallen-on-Hard-Times Job and a Bit Character who is said to be a White Sheep of the family but has little about his position in the community or views on the clan's downfall revealed. Subsequent books are inconsistent about whether the Pruitts remain in Caerphilly and don't mention whether the next generation of Pruitts, such as kids in the same softball league as Meg’s son, is shaping up to be like the old ones or is learning from the past.

@ The Unit

  • Ass Pull: Many fans feel that Molly wanting a divorce from Jonas at the end of the show is a complete 180 of her characterization for the entire preceding series.
  • Death of the Author: While a lot of the outline for the cancelled Season 5 that the showrunner eventually revealed is well-liked, his plans to have token Action Girl Red Cap get Stuffed into the Fridge can come across as a big disservice to the character, especially after how , she was meant to be a short-term character who was popular enough to keep around and had already been subjected to the controversial plot line where a Fake Defector pretends to try to rape her to make his defection look real

@ Cheating Death: Those That Lived

  • After her first meeting with the warm-hearted Harp, Crystal thinks that her grandfather was right when he said the nobles of their district were alright. The narration notes that he did say that, but Crystal misunderstood the meaning of that comment due to being Sarcasm-Blind.
  • During the interviews, Crystal regales the audience with a story of battling a mutated plant monster, which is really a grossly exaggerated version of a time she removed a dandelion from her back yard.
  • Crystal is almost as big of a Motor Mouth as her future fellow Victor Crown while she makes one logical leap after another while trying to outwit a Riddling Sphinx that will eat her and her allies if they get a question wrong. After she solves the riddle, the sphinx lets them pass, but says that her deduction was “far more complicated than it had any right being.”

@ Cheating Death: Those That Lived

  • Crystal’s district partner Jacinth is a ruthless and obnoxious Blue Blood, but he has a slight Pet the Dog moment when he kills his remaining Career ally before seeking out Crystal. Part of this is pragmatism (Crystal is a much weaker final opponent), but he does accept the possibility that he may lose and is content with the knowledge their district gets the glory and food that comes from getting a Victor no matter which of them survives.

One Piece:

  • World Government:
    • Five Elders:
      • Blind Obedience: They are forever loyal to Imu, the true ruler of the world. No matter what order they give, even if it means committing the genocide of the Lulusia Kingdom, they agree without argument.
      • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: All the Elders care about is maintaining order for the world and ensuring the government is portrayed as a benevolent force. When Akainu argues with them during the Dressrosa Arc, they shut him down siting the Marines are the image of the government and meant to serve as their force of justice and obey orders, innocent lives dying mean nothing to them so long as the World Government's reputation is good. With the reveal of Imu, the Elders further show how much they are willing to commit mass atrocities to appeal to Imu, who they basically worship as a God.
      • Grumpy Old Man: They are grumpy, sour cruel old men with little patience and no regard towards the lives of innocents so long as the World Government gets what they want.
      • Lack of Empathy: Zigzagged. They are capable of some degree of remorse for their actions, such as the destruction of Ohara. However, they have shown countless times that the ends justify the means. No matter how many civilians die from the corruption of the government, they only care about maintaining order, lives be damned.
Jay Garcia Saturn: Humans are no different than insects...Even if they lose their numbers, they will reproduce again!!'''
      • No-Nonsense Nemesis: While they have not been seen engaging in combat, when Imu is ever involved in any way, they throw all caution to the wind and will enforce Imu's wishes and brutally attack Sabo and kill Cobra to keep Imu's existence a secret.
      • Undying Loyalty: They are all blindly loyal to the true ruler of the world, Imu, who they reverie as a God. No matter what they demand, they will follow Imu's orders without hesitation justifying their cruelty as the will of the creature of the world. (Note: Imu's gender is unknown, so I'm using different pronouns).
      • Villainous Friendship: The five of them usually discuss politics of the world and what needs to be done in spite of their differences of opinion. However, there appears to be a mutual respect amongst each other as colleagues who truly seem to care for one another.

I am writing three tropes in This Isekai Maid is Forming a Union! and to know if the three tropes I have written here have any grammar errors.

  • Münchausen Syndrome: In the Momentary Duchess timeline, Previous Demeter poisoned his daughter with a non-lethal poison in order to make her dependent on him.

  • Parental Substitute: Phoebe's child, Claire Tree (originally called Little Dimitri) , clearly indicates this, as she prefers Emilie over her mother, having even called her "Mama" on occasions in the past. Emilie also affirms Claire's gender as trans, Phoebe doesn't care about her own child Claire, whom she views as soulless as the "fictional" people in this world.

  • Struggling Single Mother: Sadie is in this as well, she eventually gives up her child. Which she was keeping from the orphanage for xenophobic reasons, as the orphanage had Limpetta children.

@ * Cheating Death: Those That Lived:

  • Lovable Coward: Platinum is a rare Played for Drama example, being a mediocre Career trainee who goes into the Hunger Games after an unwanted Disqualification-Induced Victory in the academy ranking system. She spends quite a bit of time during or before the Games vomiting, crying, screaming, or running, but she is a kind person who has a lot to be genuinely afraid of, feels terrible about her one kill, and perseveres through a brutal six weeks of isolation, injury, and near-starvation before her Victory by Endurance.
@ Cheating Death: Those That Lived
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The series has a wide variety of non-Career district tributes who become Career allies, with this happening several times per decade on average, but not even one of those tributes becomes a Victor despite the interesting story potential and how at least one person in that situation winning could have made it more believable for other outlier tributes to keep joining the Career pack.

@ The Victors Project Fallen Tributes And District Citizens

Benji (23rd Hunger Games)

  • Big Man on Campus: He is a handsome boy who gets good grades, has a pretty girlfriend, and is far better-liked by the people of District 9 than his district partner Evelyn.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He dies making a “mad dash” for the Cornucopia despite the strength of the Career pack.

Doris Flaherty (70th Hunger Games)

  • Flat Character: The only thing revealed about her is that she is the first merchant kid who has been reaped as far back as Peeta can remember.

Mick Cahill (72nd Hunger Games)

  • Always Someone Better: He frequently wrestles with Peeta in school, and keeps narrowly losing while taking it in stride and expressing hope/determination that he will win their next match.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Peeta describes him as brawny and fast, both traits that make Mick a good wrestler.
  • Your Head A-Splode: Peeta is deeply traumatized by the sight of Mick’s head bursting like a piece of overripe fruit after Lupus bludgeons him with a mace.

@ The Secret Circle

@ Black Adam (2022)

  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: While this version of Cyclone is decently popular, many longtime Cyclone fans are disappointed that her Adaptational Seriousness means they won’t get to see her as a hilarious but multi-layered rare representation of a superhero with explicit mental disorders from the comics.

@ Picket Fences

  • “The Reason You Suck” Speech: In "Cold Spell," Littleton is prosecuting a case where the town is trying to terminate the parental rights of a Wiccan whose daughter painted a pentagram in the school out of misguided fear of all the black kids being bussed into town (with her actions being influenced by the negative reaction most of the adults in town, even Jimmy and Jill, display to the bussing). Littleton's closing argument has him launch into a prolonged, sarcastic Does This Remind You of Anything? speech where he says that of course the townspeople have a right to keep Rome pure and avoid interacting with people who are different than them under the argument that it leads to unpleasant tensions and opens the door for making them deal with even more different people. Everyone in the courtroom can tell that he is being sarcastic and really calling the townspeople out for their segregationist attitude, and he follows this up with a private, specific condemnation of Jimmy for seeing immediate desegregation as a cause for fear over hope and leading the town by example in that regard.
  • Butt-Monkey: It is often Played for Drama, but Oslo is disrespected by both his offscreen wife (who cheats on him) and students, is wrongfully suspected of multiple crimes, and has a dying aunt who is eventually poisoned by a mercy-killer.
  • Emasculated Cuckold: Oslo's wife hasn't had sex with him in six years as of season 3, and the reveal that she’s been having an affair (combined with how dismissively the cops treat him as a potential suspect) almost drives him into making a false confession out of a frustrated desire to be taken more seriously.
@ Her Alibi

  • Phillip has just been Shot in the Ass with an arrow when a detective calls him on the phone and thinks that Phillip and Nina are having sex after listening to Phillip make agonized yelps and say things like "it's coming," and "don't touch the shaft," as they try to get the arrow out.
  • Every Unreliable Voiceover scene where Phillip has a Humiliation Conga experience while narrating the Purple Prose adventures of his Marty Stu literary hero, such as claiming he and his diminutive literary agent Sam-who he calls a hulking bodyguard-are wearing fancy tuxedos during The Infiltration when they are really dressed in clown costumes.

@ The King Nobody Wanted

Garth Tyrell will turn himself into a poison man for a suicide run against either Stannis or any threat serious enough to form an Enemy Mine scenario between the two sides.
His discussion of the poison men and role as someone who is being set up as possibly too dangerous and vengeful to live if there is ever a genuine peace could be setting this up. Whether or not such a suicide mission would succeed is the question.

If the Whents and Lothstons both survive the story, Falena and one of Alys’ brothers will engage in Altar Diplomacy and they will make a stab at sharing Harrenhall.

@ Harry Potter

@ Stranger Things

  • Max escaping from Vecna to a triumphant musical score becoming the Signature Scene of the series can feel a bit less triumphant when he puts her in a coma during a subsequent encounter a few episodes later.

@ Black Tide Rising:

  • In "Social Distance," a group of teenagers are signed up for an intense outdoor survival course by their parents to shape them up after (mostly minor) acts of delinquency. Bring outside of the city when the zombies rise makes this punishment ultimately beneficial for them.

@ * Matthew Scudder

  • Have You Told Anyone Else?: In The Sins of the Father, Scudder tells a criminal he has told no one else about his deductions after deciding to Leave Behind a Pistol with someone people could think had committed suicide for less despicable reasons. Neither Scudder nor the criminal even consider the normal implications of this trope, though.

@ Somebody Owes Me Money

  • Fair for Its Day: Matt not minding that his friend Jerry is probably attracted to men in 1969 is decently progressive. The way that acceptance is implicitly dependent on Jerry only acting on those feelings out of sight of his poker buddies is more controversial.

Bold are additions to the original

Red Alert 3: Paradox

Paradox was originally conceived as a Game Mod, though due to engine limitations, it ceased production in 2014, with some of the assets from the mod to be released under Creative Commons attribution license. The lore continues to be developed and can be found here (which has also integrated the lore originally made for the unofficial expansions Echoes, Quantum, Annihilation, Null, Pandemonium, Insanity, Extremis, and Silentium, or PEQAN PIES for short; the original lore for the former two is preserved on a different wiki), and is being converted into a Hearts of Iron IV mod, named Shadow of Nibiru.

Denser and Wackier: While the original Paradox was a rather wacky expansion, from secret Christian conspiracy to doomsday robots. Echoes to Silentium further turned the world loony with the additions of Atlantis actually existing with the Atlanteans being distant humans who have evolved into Sea Elves, underground Rat People, an entire Hollow World filled with Dwarves (who happens to be evolutionary divergence of the Sea Elves) and Kaiju, Modern/Sci-Fi Vikings, Italian facists (that is still being led by Mussolini), shadow creatures, and Communist Germans wielding Nazi-esque superscience coming from different dimensions, various evil and good aliens from Bio Punk Orks to alien robots emulating the Transformers and Nikke, Yuri's psychic division from Red Alert 2 returning for revenge, and the Allies and Soviets from Red Alert 2 arriving into Paradox to save their timeline, and the units from Uprising (which was cut form the original Paradox) being reintroduced.

Serial Escalation: What started out as an expansion of Red Alert 3 with additional wacky technology has spiraled into Earth having a Hollow World, multiple dimensions, multiple alien invasions, psychic using "magic" factions. And the forces from Red Alert 2 jumping into the Paradox world.

Continental Revolutionaries

Unfortunate Name: The meta reason why they were renamed from Confederate to Continental. As their old name was referenced to the side of the Civil War known for owning slaves (and other unsavory practices), despite the Revolutionaries being one of the more light gray factions.

Comintern Volunteers

Canon Foreigner: The Comintern is the first, and only, faction introduced into Paradox years after it ceased production.

Our Life: Now & Forever

Qiu Lin

Meaningful Name: Their name, Qiu, means 'autumn' (秋), which is commented on in the game, and their surname, Lin, means 'forest' (林), thus their full name is 'autumn forest'.

Their Name Really Is "Barkeep": Their nickname, Autumn, is literally their first name translated into English.

Tamarack Baumann

Big Beautiful Woman: Tamarack as an adult (Step 3) is definitely on the full-figured side, and she is still as cute as a button.

Meaningful Name: A tamarack is a type of tree, which she happily discusses when meeting the MC, and her surname, Baumann, is a nickname for neighbor in German.

Darren/Renee Murray

He-Man Woman Hater (replacing Does Not Like Men): Downplayed in Step 1. According to Qiu, Ren has difficulty interacting with women outside of her family, and is stand-offish towards Tamarack and an MC who identifies as female in any way, but she is never actively malicious and is, at worst, uncomfortable talking with them (unless it's her mother or Dorothea). She grows out of it by Step 3, and is implied that this behavior was due to her own discomfort towards her gender identity as a child.

Ernst Baumann

Meaningful Name: His first name, Ernst, means "serious" in German while his surname "Baumann" translates to "construction worker" in German. And he is considerably more Stoic compared to his wife and granddaughter and worked in construction prior to his retirement.

Red Oni, Blue Oni: The more withdrawn blue to his wife's more social red. Bonus points for him having blue eyes while Dorothea has red eyes.

Kiyan Yusuf

Unseen No More: In step 1 he's only referenced in speech. By step 2 onwards he gains a sprite.

  • Dark Ages (Marvel Comics): Doctor Doom is once again depicted like he is in mainline canon as a brilliant mastermind albeit more antiheroic than normal.
