Whew. I just got through a brutal Modern Age war as Ibn Battuta of Prussia vs. Confucius of Qing and Catherine the Great of Russia. Picked up roughly ten Settlements and employed the world's first nuclear weapon for good measure.

Combat feels really good in this game. No excessively long animations, for one thing, but the tactical mix of infantry, cavalry, ranged, and artillery units is perfect. I also employed air power to devastating effect. My naval power was a bit slow in getting into position but once it was it was also overwhelming.

It's very rare that a Civ VI game ever gets to this point, but based on the way the Age transitions work, the Modern Age opens in a way that almost invariably leads to warfare on an... well, "equal" would be a misnomer, but a comparable footing.

Would be really nice to have more control over road placement. The visual clutter is so intense that seeing which tiles have roads and which don't is incredibly hard. Also, Bridges aren't supposed to end movement, but they do. Grr.

Legacy bonuses are super powerful, though. I unlocked the entire tech tree by turn 50 and then it was mostly a matter of my Cities catching up via production. The Rankings screen looks a little silly: I'm 2/3s done on Railroad Tycoon, vastly over the top on Ideology, a few turns of building to Space Race, and vastly over the top on Geographic Society. Now it's a question of whether the Age will finish before I have one of the victory Projects done.

Victory in this game is all about amassing as many Legacy and Ageless bonuses as possible. It's that simple. I've seen lots of complaints that snowballing is no longer a thing — this is totally false. It just works very differently.

Edit: Just found a... bug? Building over an Airbase kills the Squadron Commander that you used to make it. I thought it killed the airplanes based there, too, but they get displaced to a (random?) Airport. No warning, either.

I was watching Jesse Cox's complaint video on VII and he came up with an excellent idea I hope Fireaxis goes with: the ability to tune how strong the end of age crisis is, maybe even make it worse than what it currently is, kinda like how disasters do.

Hmm. I've seen the Plague crisis several times and only once was it really a problem, infecting nearly every city in my empire. But when that happened, hoo boy. I struggled.

The biggest problem with Plague is that it's not clear what the rules are. Infected cities go into unrest, preventing most things from being built, but not all things, and the UI doesn't tell you which those are. My capital city got stuck trying to build a Barracks that never completed because it amassed all required Production during an infection. I finally ended up purchasing it for zero gold.

Little bugs like this will get worked out eventually, I'm sure.

Honestly I'm more annoyed at disasters, they seem to be abrupt and random.

Also wow, shifting from Exploration to Modern was something else, primarily because of how resources worked.

Completing the Treasure Fleets legacy objective in the Exploration Age is really annoying. The AI makes a beeline for it and often claims all the prime settlement spots before you can research Shipbuilding. It's also the only one with a pace that can't be easily increased... except by conquering the opponents' settlements, I suppose. Maybe that's the point. But doing that is very likely to trip Non Sufficit Orbis first.

If you are waiting for Shipbuilding to settle the Distant Lands, then it's no wonder the AI has already taken up the best spots.

Your naval units can cross open ocean at the start of the Exploration Age and Civilian and Support units can cross after Cartography, one of the three first techs of the age. It's just slow and potentially dangerous to cross open Ocean until Shipbuilding and you can't start generating Treasure Fleets until Shipbuilding.

I'm presuming that now VI will be left as maintenance-only by the company. Is it possible that they will release the source code? It would allow modders to change the game more radically and give it a bit more life.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

Yeah, why would they release the source code, especially when it's still a recent game?

I kinda wish there's a way to automate a lot of the movement.

[up][up][up] Yes, I'm aware you can settle Distant Lands before Shipbuilding, but I'm in the habit of using the first few turns of each Age to build infrastructure so I can peak later. Diverting resources for a land grab feels wasteful. Need to retrain that habit of thinking if I want to preserve my Cities going into the Modern Age.

Edit: The Modern Age is even worse, with all artifacts claimed by turn 70 or so — assuming that someone (like me) rushes Hegemony. Of course, in most games I'm through the Modern Age tech and civics trees by turn 70.

I'm kinda surprised that they didn't do more with the trapping tiles aside the one Unique Unit. I figured it was foreshadowing setting minefields in the Modern Era.

Augustus + Shawnee is kind of broken in the Exploration Age. Get a bunch of Towns set up and they can feed so many resources back to your core Cities that production is incredibly fast. Finally found a use for specialized Towns, too. Normally it seems like you wouldn't want them to stop growing.

There is an indicator, but it's hidden in menus. I would like something like the trade route system where it points to all settlements that are connected to that specific one.

Maybe even have an extra menus when selecting a specialization to show what settlements that are going to be affected.

Yeah Civ 7 hides a lot of info in weird places. Quill 18 has actually done an entire video highlighting all the hidden info locations.

and another going over a Reddit post[1] which talks about hidden mechanics

Ooh, that's a big ol' list of mechanics. Let's see...

  • Clarification on how units carry over. I have some of my own notes on this:
    • Yes, you get up to six/nine infantry units based in Settlements, plus some amount on active Commanders. However, the Commander unit numbers appear to get capped at some amount as well. This can mean some of your Commanders start an Age empty, including (irritatingly) Naval Commanders. I'll have to play around to see what the max count is.
    • While you keep all your active Commanders, you permanently lose any that are dead and in the process of respawning.
  • The only tech and policy bonuses that carry over between Ages are Settlement cap increases. So, beeline those before the Age ends or you'll permanently miss out on them.
  • Legacy buildings (those not tagged "Ageless") keep 2/3 of their base yields (Antiquity/Exploration) while losing adjacency bonuses. This can increase the yields of some buildings, especially if they give Influence. Save those for last.
  • Unique Improvements are Ageless — I knew this, and it's always good to spend your gold on a building spree to max out the carryover bonuses on rural tiles. Maxing out an Age transition is huge towards your success in the next one.
    • So-called "warehouse bonuses" include the base for improving a tile (Farms grant +1 Food) and adjacency bonuses for buildings and improvements. Building a unique improvement over a Farm will retain all such bonuses — or should. There may be some bugs.
  • Fresh Water gives a +5 Happiness bonus to new Settlements instead of altering food. Good to know.
  • Commanders stationed in a settlement reduce Unhappiness by 10%, +10% per promotion. Man, that's stronger than I realized.
  • You get a Wonder's instant bonuses, as if you had built it, when conquering a Settlement, not just its static bonuses.
  • The "permanent" War Support penalty for razing settlements only lasts until the end of an Age, so get to burnin' once the meter fills up.
  • Not all districts have roads. Yeah, I noticed that. Weird.
  • Bridges are funky as hell. They don't allow unimpeded movement for land units across rivers. Hopefully that's a bug that'll be fixed.
  • The "tradition" policies that carry over between Ages are the ones you unlock on the civilization-specific policy trees. Duh, should've realized that.
  • A "quarter" is a district with two buildings. (sigh)
  • Each specialist increases a building's adjacency bonuses by 50% in that district. For crying out... now I understand why they're sometimes really good.
  • You can see where your buildings are within the Settlement Details menu without having to mouse over every tile. Sheesh, thanks.
  • The UI doesn't tell you the rural/urban population split of a settlement, making use of the associated Reliquary bonuses very hard.
  • Unlocking a second or third Founder Belief is associated with random in-game events. (sigh)
  • Something I did figure out: bonuses that accelerate producing something multiply the cost by 1/(1+Modifier), so +50% reduces the cost by a third. Mathematically, this makes perfect sense, but the UI doesn't do a good job of explaining it.
  • You can see where your specialized Towns are sending their resources by looking at their details tab.
  • You can stack multiple copies of the same Factory resource on a single Settlement. I did not know that.
  • "Legend unlocks" in a leader's attribute trees can only be unlocked once they reach a certain level. Again, there's no UI hint of this.
  • If you force-end a turn without assigning production to a city, it stores that production up. Lets you cheese Wonders in particular.

Bugs that are noted:

  • Defeated independent powers may leave claimed tiles behind. Yep, noticed that.
  • Sometimes cities just refuse to connect themselves to your trade network. Yep.
  • Commanders don't earn experience from units more than one hex away even if they have the Merit commendation. Yep.
  • Naval units get very confused about whether they can attack at range. Yep.
  • The rural religion icon on a settlement will remain red if it's following a belief other than the one of its founder, even if you reclaim it. Yep.

Since console patches for VII aren't likely until early March, Fireaxis is allowing PC players to roll back their patchrd through Steam in order to continue cross play.

I commend this game's animations. They look slow but you can actually skip them, and the combat animations are good.

EDIT: What does "x percent food/happiness towards maintaining specialists" mean in social policies? Is it reduction of penalty?

Coming back to VI, has anyone ever got an aircraft carrier beyond one promotion?

I still can't find a mod that prevents the AI from razing cities, and I don't know the game well enough to make it. You'd think such a simple thing would be available somewhere. I've lost track of how many games I had to reload or restart because the AI wiped out a conquered city for no reason.

Basically just finished my first game. Has anyone else used any other town specializations other than food, production, or influence?

Also, the Dogo Onsen is a Game-Breaker likely due to a bug where it gives a population to every city when you enter a celebration, rather than the city that owns it like the tooltip says.

I guess you could do the militaristic specialization for any particularly strategic towns situated at chokepoints.

I played Civ IV back in the day so I thought I'd give Civ V a try, and right off the bat I thought it was weird that you can discover lost technology in ruins, I thought the series was more realistic than that.

Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.
