Ugh. When playing Portugal, don't take the Alchemical Society as your secret society. The University replacements aren't compatible. In general, this should be a warning to be careful about conflicting building replacements.

[up]Kinda. They took base Teddy's abilities and split them between Bull Moose and Rough Rider and then gave them additional abilities based on those.

Once you get the New Frontier Pass, you can no longer play base Teddy, except maybe with a mod.

[up][up] The Owls with the Ottoman are another.

But shouldn't you be playing Portugal with the Owls, since they get more Trade Routes with a Gilded Vault and a Lighthouse in a city? Or was that just a practice run?

[down] lol

On a lark, based on a recent joke in Zero Punctuation, I took the default tech tree in Civ VI and clicked on Nuclear Fission to see what I could skip to get there. Turns out it's quite a lot.

  • I never learn sailing or any form of ocean travel.
  • I skip Astrology, so no religion.
  • More amusingly, I skip Industrialization, Sanitation, Chemistry, and Electricity. Also Rocketry and Flight, so apparently I'm homebrewing this nuclear reactor from dieselpunk tech and driving the bombs to their targets.

Mentioned changes from the dev livestream (copy/pasted from a reddit thread on the subject):

  • Maya: Now +1 production for farms adjacent to an Observatory (makes up for the low production of their flat land start bias, though this bias has been adjusted slightly). Free Builder for all cities settled within 6 tiles of the capital (not including the capital itself).

  • Extra Builder for Maya (and Spain) stacks with Ancestral Hall.

  • Trebuchets at Military Engineering (thanks OP)

  • Stables now properly list Siege units as gaining bonuses from them (previously Stables did affect Siege units, but it wasn't stated).

  • Siege Tactics eureka changed - now requires two Trebuchets instead of two Bombards.

  • Sumeria: Gilgamesh's leader ability now offers +5 strength to allies in a war with a common foe (stacks with military alliance effect, I assume this applies for him as well).

  • Swordsmen back to 35 strength, down from 36. Infantry now 75 strength, up from 70.

  • Certain unique melee infantry now have a +3 strength bonus compared to before (not Legions, but including the Macedonian and Kongolese replacements, also Ottoman Janissaries). This is to make up for the smaller window of use.

  • Pikemen: 41 -> 45 strength.

  • Coursers: 44 -> 46 strength

  • Knights: 48 -> 50 strength

  • Kurgans now provide more gold and faith. With Stirrups, even more faith. Now will earn tourism based on faith with Flight.

  • Saka Horse Archers: Melee combat strength is now 20, up from 15.

  • Ottomans now have a nitre start bias.

  • Ottomans get an extra Governor title at Gunpowder.

  • Siege units now have better melee strength (all siege units have +2 melee strength compared to before, e.g. Catapults: 23 -> 25).

  • Trebuchets: 35 melee strength, 45 bombard strength.

  • Old Military Tactics U Us confirmed to replace the Men-at-Arms (previously only the Khevsur was confirmed). Similarly, Line Infantry will be replaced with Redcoats and Garde Impériale.

  • Hoplites now have a +3 strength boost over regular Spearmen (25 -> 28).

  • Gorgo: Now gets +1 combat strength for every military policy card in her government.

  • Nubia: Production bonus for ranged units: 50% -> 30% (first confirmed nerf of the patch)

  • Nubian Pyramid base yield: 1 food/1faith -> 2 food/2 faith

  • Russia nerf: Used to get 8 tiles for free with new cities, now 5. Lavra GWAM points - now requires Holy Site buildings (Shrine for Writer, Temple for Artist, Worship for Musician).

  • Explaining rationale for Khmer change: Missionaries can't initiate theological combat, hard cap on number of relics - made Khmer hard to play with. Instead doubled-down on tall/faith gameplay.

  • Work Ethic has not been nerfed.

  • Khmer new tourism bonuses: Do they count as religious tourism? Unsure - QA may tweet about it later.

  • Moksha's base promotion now grants +2 faith for every speciality district in the city.

  • Kongo: No longer gets a bonus to Great Writer Points. However, now, relics, artefacts, and Great Works of Sculpture generate extra faith.

  • Poland: Now abilities will function if she lacks a religion of its own. Winged Hussar now a Cuirassier replacement. Strength/cost adjusted accordingly.

  • Diplomatic Quarter now has a unique icon.

  • Launcher update for Epic tomorrow with the patch; if you have more issues, contact the support page.

  • No changes to Ethiopia other than the UU being buffed in strength alongside the generic Courser. No direct changes to Gaul.

  • Men-at-Arms unlocked at Apprenticeship. Costs 160 production, 20 iron, 3 gold maintenance.

  • Line Infantry unlocked at Military Science. Costs 360 production, 20 nitre, 5 gold maintenance.

  • Huge TSL earth map on display: 12 civs, 18 city-states. Japan is ~13 tiles including mountains (as a rough guide to how big the map is). Iberia is ~12 tiles. Lots of natural wonders! Spain/Morocco so close you could bridge across with it with the Golden Gate Bridge. Natural wonders are fixed, civs/city-states are random unless you use the leader/city-state selector.

  • Conquistador strength bonus now works if the unit is adjacent to a religious unit - they don't have to share the same tile any more. Unfortunately still can't link religious and military units.

  • Spain now has a Geothermal Fissure start bias (instead of coast, or in addition? Implied to replace it.) This gives Spain a massive edge to using their unique advantages more reliably.

  • Old scenarios have not been updated with new features.

  • Saving configuration of game setup will no longer save your assigned leaders, but will remember leader pools/city-state pools/natural wonder selector, so you can still get the same effect by disallowing every leader except the ones you had before. Now no longer remembers map seed (though of course you could paste it back in).

  • Conquistadors are 58 strength, up from 55 (most melee infantry U Us have seen a +3 strength boost).

  • Aztecs: UB now gets +1 culture compared to before.

  • Korea: Civ ability now stacks for multiple Seowons adjacent to the same farm/mine.

  • Australia: Stronger start bias for coast than before.

  • India: Varu now upgrades to Curiassier instead of Tank.

  • Zulus: Now +2 gold and +1 science for every building in an Ikanda district. Impi strength boost to match increase in Pikeman strength.

Oh good, they fixed the issue where Barbarian Outposts would stop spawning in Clans mode. It rather made my endgame Recon units useless, as I would use them as roving barbarian cleaners. Of course, in that mode any unit that disperses a camp gets XP rather than only Recon units, making them less useful.

A thank you from the devs:

Hello, Civilization players! I am Anton Strenger, lead designer on the New Frontier Pass for Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. As the team here at Firaxis reflected on our last twelve months with Civ, the common thread is how grateful we are for you – our players and the community you have built around this game. Your passion, enthusiasm, and insightful feedback have helped us shape this game into something great.

This time last year, we started off the New Frontier Pass with the release of the Maya and Gran Colombia pack. We had just started working from home full time, as COVID-19 precautions swept the world. As hard as that was, it brought into focus the role that our game plays in peoples’ lives. One of my favorite parts of seeing your reactions to the Pass in the last year was how some of you, like me, were able to find a corner of solace and joy in Civ, amidst the uncertain times we were living through. Not being together physically heightened the importance of being together online, through games and internet communities. We had always planned to have six Community Updates throughout the year, to bring free content and balance tweaks to all our players, but these became more important than ever. They were a great way to check in with the community and see what was on your mind. While we had broad sketches early on for what to do with these updates, we stayed nimble, knowing that we would react to you playing the Pass for yourselves and sharing your thoughts. The Barbarian Clans mode, the Tech and Civic Shuffle mode, the various Pickers, dozens of balance changes, and countless other additions were inspired by your feedback, directly or indirectly.

With the New Frontier Pass we wanted to build on our game’s strengths, but also explore new directions that would benefit you, our players. The biggest change was consistent monthly updates, alternating between New Frontier Pass releases and the free Community Updates. “Instead of having our players wait through months for a new expansion,” we wondered, “what if we released an update every month, with more transparency and open communication?” The second big change was Game Modes. After the Gathering Storm expansion, the team at Firaxis was generally happy with amount of complexity and systems in the game, but we also felt a hunger to try more experimental systems. We knew that not all players would like such systems in every game, but we also knew that these systems were bigger than a standalone scenario and could flourish when mixed in with the core game. One of the things that makes Civilization special to me, both as a designer and as a player, is that it leaves room for the player to tell their own story. Replayability and fun combinations of outcomes – whether they mirror real history or diverge wildly from it – are what make our game truly unique. The addition of Game Modes was yet another dimension to add to the core strengths of replayability and player-driven story. By placing the power in your hands, we saw all sorts of fun combinations and results. We saw silly stories like Hercules teaming up with vampires to fight zombie hordes. One of my favorite moments, though, was watching a streamer play on Twitch with Heroes & Legends mode. He explored the ocean with Sinbad only to run into the Bermuda Triangle natural wonder and teleport halfway around the world, and he burst out in surprised laughter. These serendipitous gameplay moments are a joy for us to watch.

The big stars of the show though, as always, were our new leaders and civilizations. In addition to serving those same core strengths of replayability and player-driven story, they are our historical foundation. As with every Civilization release, we carefully considered which leaders and civilizations to add. We considered factors like geography, time period, gender, gameplay, personality, and familiarity. Mixing together classic favorites like Maya and Portugal with surprising newcomers like Gran Colombia and Vietnam resulted in a fun cast of characters. Our team loves to see the flurry of historical interest and research that accompanies our announcement of a new leader. For example, I was surprised to find out how many people did not know about Simón Bolívar, and was happy to play a small role in helping them discover a new part of history! We also loved to see our Vietnamese players posting their excitement about playing as their own civilization in our game for the very first time. Civilization is truly an international game, not only in its content but also in its community. We are honored to be a part of it.

From the entire team here at Firaxis, thank you coming along for the ride in this year of Civilization. Whether you bought the New Frontier Pass right at the start, or only have the base game. Whether you are new to the Civilization series, or been playing with us since 1991. You are the best fans in gaming!

Double post: A video version of the above.

I've been seeing speculation that all this thanks from the dev team means VI development is over (except for a few balance/fix patches) and I'm inclined to believe it.

I think its fair to assume if it's their last patch it means

1)They are DONE with the civ games for awhile,new projects are already been planned out

2)They're eyeing Civ 7 but its not even in development yet ,Civilization games sell well enough for them to continue making them
