Watching the show, I'm reminded that I still don't get why Littlefinger fucked everything up.
At the beginning of the series, he's a ridiculously minor lordling who managed to claw his way to being the royal master of coin through sheer ability. As of the end of A Feast for Crows, he's Lord of the Eyrie, one of the most powerful men in the Seven Kingdoms. So, basically, ambition. By destroying the status quo, he created opportunities for advancement.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

I've long had the theory that Littlefinger was in cahoots with Mance Rayder, and that, in exchange for some gift or favor from him, Littlefinger caused all sorts of chaos in the South so that no one would pay attention to the wildling army crossing the Wall in the North. We do know that Mance Rayder has travelled south of the Wall personally in the past; he must've been up to something during that time.

Littlefinger may be a minor lord in Go T, but his plan was already in motion even then. The man is crazy prepared and a fantastic manipulative bastard.

You will never love a women as much as George Lucas hates his fans.

I was always quite fond of Robb. As well as that mercenary of Tyrion's whose name escapes me at the moment. Did the Hound ever get a POV?

[down]Bron! He is awesome. I'd like to see a Hound POV (since no way in hell is he actually dead).

The First Sword of Braavos, Syrio Forel. He didn't last long but damn if that man wasn't awesome.

Nothing short of actually seeing his death occur will convince me that Syrio Forel is not still alive.

Honestly, I'm kinda torn on Clash of Kings. My first impression is that it's not as good as the first and third, due to Jon and Dany's chapters sucking, plus Jamie and Littlefinger basically being no-shows.

On the other hand, it has so many great moments to make up for these; Tyrion ruling like a boss, Arya as the ghost in the castle, Theon's decent into hopelessness, Catelyn having half-decent chapters. And of course, the mindblowingly epic battle of the blackwater.

I hope the TV show does that scene justice.

Too bad everybody who was there has died. Of course, that does mean he can say "You thought I was dead? You should know better, killing the First Sword of Braavos is not so easily done!"

I haven't read the series (but have followed the write-up of the books on the site and am watching Game Of Thrones religiously).

Anyway, there was a comment on the HBO site about how Syrio is given a line in episode 6, about death being the only true god- and how that makes it sound like he and that Faceless Man with the J name are one in the same.

I get the impression this scene is original to the tv series, but assuming Martin has control of what's going on, it could foreshadow a reveal in the books.

Pretty sure Martin has at least implied that Syrio is dead.

Also, I seem to recall some people analyzing the timeline and determining that it would be impossible for Syrio to become Jaqen, but I suppose that's still not a guarantee — the timeline does have a couple problems, such as Tyrion having to travel very fast to meet Catelyn at the inn. I never paid too much attention to that, though.

I think that the Faceless Men are pretty important in Braavos, so it could just be because Syrio is from there. I don't think that most Braavosi share the Faceless Men's religion though. According to the Ice and Fire wiki the most important religion in Braavos seem to be the Moonsingers, who founded it. They seem to be separate from the FM. I wonder why I haven't heard of them. :/

Yeah, that scene is original. The moonsingers, well, there is a mention in book one, but they get a bit more coverage in book 4, when the guy is talking to Arya about the city. Not much detail other than they are the ones who lead the people to Braavos. Plenty of other gods in the city though. They have an isle of the Gods where all the temples are.

...how? We last see Syrio fighting Lannister guardsmen (and a member of the Kingsguard, IIRC) to let Ayra escape. We first see Jaqen with Yoren and the rest of the Night's Watch recruits after Yoren takes Ayra out of King's Landing, and it's said that Yoren found Jaqen (along with Biter and Rorge) in the black cells. It's been days at least, and possibly weeks, between those two appearances.

But Jaqen had to be in the black cells when they were emptied out, which was earlier, when Eddard was still Hand. In ACOK Yoren says that Eddard gave him the «pick o' the dungeons».

He got permission to do so, but he didn't necessarily do it immediately. It makes sense that he would wait until right before leaving the city to pick up the prisoners — less time that he has to watch them so they don't try to escape or something, and less time that he has to feed them.

Hmm. Possible, or at the very least I'm tired of searching through the book for clues. :P But I did notice that when Ser Meryn comes to take Arya, after Syrio defies him he specifically orders for Syrio to be killed. That makes it rather less likely that Syrio was instead captured and put in the black cells.
