A Transformers Thread

Man that Beast Wars finale hit hard.

Especially Depth Charge's & Rampage's deaths. A perfect end really to two individuals with nothing left in their lives but hate.

The last two episodes of Beast Wars are basically awful. Functional, but just a big ol' GEEWUN wank at the expense of Beast Wars' own ongoing storylines.

I wouldn't call them awful. There's some good bits. Depth charge and Rampage's death for sure. Waspinator finally having his fill of being the chew toy of his own team. Even Clone Dinobot regaining OG Dinobot's memories.

It's just that like Prime's ending, it's rushing so fast. Tigerhawk is immediately killed (after having just been introduced, but Hasbro is blame there). Inferno and Quickstrike as comically written off. Rattrap, Blackarachnia, Cheetor and Silverbolt basically do fuck all.

I also wouldn't really call it Geewun fanwank since the Nemesis wasn't even named before that episode. Taking it for the finale wasn't a bad a idea.

I mean, what the fuck did happen to the Decepticon's original ship? It's a good question, and we got an answer.

The good parts you mentioned are good (I would have liked more done with Depth Charge to develop him out of that "grim revenge obsessed warrior" mode like they played with but at the end of the day it was still a decent end, if pointless), but the whole spectacle of Megatron flying around with the Nemesis and trying to blow up the Ark is based in "Woah this Super Important G1 stuff is happening! Again!"

They weren't going to top Megatron disrupting space and time by shooting Optimus Prime in the face and they shouldn't have tried. Granted things played out the way they did because Wars was getting cancelled for Machines, and we all know how that turned out.

Mostly I'm just mad that the Vok got sidelined.

Well technically we DO see the Nemesis in G1 in the episode Microbots. It's just unamed.

Meh, the Vok never were more than obstacle. Like a big rock or an excuse for the plot thingy du jour. So I sort of never expected them to go anywhere.

The key is watch beast machine on its own and ignore its attempts to be a sequel to Beast Wars. If you divorce it in your mind (just tell yourself it's on another universe), it's actually quite a good show. Not flawless (Nightscream exists), but it's quite deep and has a very mature environmentalist message, especially for children's television.

The pointless is the beauty.

Depth Charge was actually recovering & growing as a bot but when he saw Rampage by sheer chance that one final time nothing could stop them from finally settling things.

Tragedy at its core.

Yeah its a lot better to think of it that way. Especially if you don't like Cybertron turning into a techno-organic planet cause of the words of some unknown spiritual being.

x2 The problem is that I live in a universe where Beast Wars had a rushed conclusion where they killed off some of my favourite characters in favor of Beast Machines.

And Beast Machines is boring on its own. It's all ambition, no pay off.

I get that, but at the end of the day it renders Depth Charge's growth moot. He starts out a grim determined hunter and ends the same way.

It's bitterly cynical for a kid's show, and I'm not sure I like it. Granted I don't think Depth Charge would have survived the show either way.

I think the saddest thing about Depth Charge's end is that he didn't even go down there with the intent of fighting Rampage. The latter forced that battle. He really was trying to move past it, because the situation was too big for him to focus on revenge.

You could say Rampage got what he wanted in the end. I always got the feeling he wanted things to go that way.

Woof. Reading up on the Characters page for the Autobots in Robots in Disguise/Transformers Vol. 2/Optimus Prime got me to realize...

Pyra Magna is a real witch.

So much so that I kind of wish something will happen and she gets broken or forced to eat Humble Pie. (Maybe a surprise encounter with Overlord, who by the way, has never fought Optimus and is currently just roaming space for all we know, thus totally making an encounter between the two totally plausible?)

Also, honest question, does anyone else think Jazz might be partially overreacting towards Optimus after the former got duped into a G.I. Joe trap and Optimus texted him to run for it? I mean, I get that Jazz is steamed that Optimus didn't go out of the way to save him (Jazz) himself, but wasn't Optimus kinda busy with more pressing matters? At the very least, Optimus was considerate enough to give Jazz the heads up to get out of Dodge. So...

I'd be more bothered if it was something like DBZ. Albeit, it helps that SF is low-level for character skills, enough that it feels fitting. Transformers are very down to earth power-wise(no pun intended considering where many of the shows take place), but still semi-stronger. Street Fighter has characters with some superhuman powers that aren't extremely high level at all, so it feels like it could mesh well.

What might be weird is the story instead. Not the specific franchises crossing over.

Well, if that's not a Weird Crossover, then this certainly is!

It's Fan Art, obviously, but it does make a guy wish they did more with the Disney Label (although it would be an absolute nightmare to market...)

I'm glimpsing at Transformers Power of the Primes and...

...is Megatron the protagonist this time around? What series of events led up to that? Who is Megatronus?

Haven't seen it, but I believe this version of Megatron has become The Atoner for his part in the war. Megatronus is The Fallen, as that's what his name was before he betrayed the Thirteen Primes. Modern continuities tend to have Megatron name himself after Megatronus once he formed the Decepticons.

Spoilers time;

At the end of Prime, which had a movie, Megatron outright became an atoner for his sins and went good after being enslaved by Unicron. Starscream was flabbergasted. He overall disbanded the Decepticons. It's quite possible for him to become a protagonist for that reason alone.

So was the audience. It was one of the most poorly written Heel–Face Turn, thanks to the movie's rushed script.

I like the idea, but the execution was awful. So abrupt, out of nowhere, and motivated by a Captain Obvious Heel Realization.

Nonono, Power of the Primes is the follow-up to Transformers Combiner Wars, not Transformers: Prime. Combiner Wars is set in it's own continuity and mostly takes elements from the IDW comics. It's also notorious for being considered the worst Transformers series since Transformers: Energon. Having sat through all of Energon, that's not a statement one throws around lightly.

Combiner Wars wasn't great but energon will always be way worse. I didn't have to sit through over 50 episodes of CW, and the script, while not good, was competent. That and I'm more willing to forgive a small net animation than an anime produced for the mainstream. CW got the bad end of the hype machine and no, it's not the hot awesome thing people wanted it to be (and the creators wanted it to be).

It's got lame animation, dubious writing, uninteresting to unlikable characters (except Megatron), and other dumb shit. But it's also got an art style that's easy to appreciate, a neat take on Megatron, and some fairly decent voice work, especially from non-major voice actors.
