I know it's not exactly the main issue at hand, and I'm not sure if I should put this in this one or the Wiki Curator thread, but it's related to both- One of the rules for keeping it was that we have to show that we're making efforts to stamp out inappropriate stuff that does find its way to the pages with Adsense ads there— since we've only got the 9 or 10 mods for the thousands upon thousands of pages, would it be worthwhile to make it part of a curator's official job to keep things, not only correct and accurate, but Google safe? Or would that be giving them too much power?
They lost me. Forgot me. Made you from parts of me. If you're the One, my father's son, what am I supposed to be?@Wulf: I think the Wiki Curator project is on hold until we get the macroscopic issues resolved. We're going to install report buttons on every wiki page that will alert mods to problems, and mods will have a very simple "flag/unflag this page NSFW" button. Plus, a lot of the initial work can be done simply off of the indexes. If we need to recruit more, that's fine, but we simply don't have the room to address it at the moment.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Elle on the previous page: I've added that FAQ — it seemed like a really good idea this morning. Thank you for having your brain in gear.

If we do have a "flag this page for NSFW" button, would it have like a comment box to explain what aspect of the page is NSFW?
It would make it easier to determine which pages should be walled off and which ones could be edited to be SFW.
Reaction Image RepositoryOn another note... How long should we expect to wait before Google makes its opinion on whether Project FE-302 fits within its "family-friendly" standards?
I'm pretty sure that Eddie said they aren't, a while back.
The review needed though is not that, it's Eddie's appeal to Google Adsense asking them to reinstate the site. It has to demonstrate that we've complied with all of the policies in their Terms of Service.

But he said "On the grant idea: The paperwork for becoming a foundation is still underway."
... What is it with you and double-posting? Something must be up with your computer/network.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Pretty sure that you can have a foundation running servers in another country, anyway.
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.Out of curiosity, I understand Google having every right to yank the ads, but don't they usually say "You are in violation of our ToS, please fix your site within 30-90 days or we will disable our ads?"
Something like that? Ah well.
Also, TV Tropes will be a foundation? That's pretty cool.
EDIT: I was just at the Made Of Win page and apparently blocked a pop-up. Thought we weren't supposed to get those.

"The fact that your food can be made into makeshift bombs alarms the Hell out of me, Scrye." - CharlatanThat page is indeed getting a pop up. Below is the URL for the ad itself. Perhaps this can be looked into?
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.I got a popup just now too, and I'm supposed to have IE and Google toolbar set to block those.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!""I have a pop-up blocker. Why am I still receiving these ads? Opt MD does not deliver pop-ups, only pop-unders. Pop-ups are ads which appear over top of your web browser, blocking your view of a page's content until you close them or move them away. Pop-unders are ads which appear behind your web browser. Pop-unders do not obstruct your view of the content you are actively consuming. Pop-up blockers can not always effectively block pop-unders."
That's from the host site of that advert.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.Freaking opportunistic morons. What makes you think that if I blocked popups, I'd welcome popunders into my home with open arms?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The rest of their page is no more appealing to be honest.
We need to figure out who is doing this and kill them, if possible. I really think Pop Unders, unless they bring in dollars by the hundred per click, are a really bad idea for the site.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.Pop-unders are tricksy, underhanded inventions of the Prince of Lies.
There are four things getting tangled up here.
- The servers are in the US. I thought California, but apparently they're now in Texas.
- Janitor is working on getting a foundation set up that would own the site. She's in Switzerland, so that's where the foundation would be. It's all very legal and complicated, and there's some sort of review that the Swiss government has to do.
- Hershele offered to write a grant proposal for us to see if we could land a grant from someplace like the Paley Center. That's what Eddie was responding to with the "That should probably wait for the foundation"
- Once we have the barrier between NSFG and SFG pages, up and the pages that need to be behind it are behind it, Fast Eddie can appeal the decision by Google to pull the ads. If they decide we've done a good enough job of segregating the stuff that doesn't meet their TOS and that we've got appropriate safeguards in place, they give us our ads back. and we've got breathing space.
@Black Wolfe: What I mean by that is changing which provider is used. As in, something like Amazon associates for the SFW mode, and another one for the NSFW mode.
And with the virus issue, well, even Adsense has them. We had an issue with that a while back.
And as for Tv Tropes becoming a foundation, hell yes.

The technical reason is more specific than that. Popup blocker software doesn't care whether it's over or under. However most blockers try to have settings to allow for pop-up windows that you actually want to see, usually by way of you clicking on a link that opens a new window. So the way to get around a popup blocker is to code it so when you click on a link, it looks to the browser like you requested that popup.

We only have a partial day of information on how Casale is working out, with an important part of the day missing. So, can't have any conclusions or projections about it. It's better than Project Wonderful and Amazon Associates, this much we already know.
On the grant idea: The paperwork for becoming a foundation is still underway. Some sort of judicial review needed in the Swiss system. Better to wait until that is all settled before going for grants, I think.
Goal: Clear, Concise and Witty
