I didn't expect to identify with Nutt so much... But we really are alike...

I think the book would have been a lot funnier if I knew anything about British football.

Yeah, I identified with Nutt quite a lot.

Anyone else think that the best part of the book was the reference to Rincewind and his Sock from Sourcery?

I remember getting into argument with a bunch of crazy people who thought that Nutt was a Captain Ersatz of Wolverine. How messed up is that?

For me the best part was Stibbons laying down the law to the senior staff. I've never found Rincewind to be particularly interesting, his books all put me to sleep(although I did enjoy the movie adaptation of Colour of Magic).

This is still a signature.

I was actually disappointed enough with Unseen Academicals that I wrote a negative review of it on a livejournal community, which is not something I'm in the habit of doing. Pterry is still one of my favorite authors, and even given the Alzheimer's, I think he still has better in him.

This was the only Discworld book in my school library, and the only thing by Terry Pratchet that I have read, other than Good Omens. I really liked it. Nutt was an excellent woobie, I identified a lot with Glenda,I loved Vetinari and I loved the way the world was built. I also liked the tone of the book, which I understand is lighter than most of the other Discworld books. Which of them do you think I should read, based on the fact that I really liked this one?

It's... not really lighter in tone than most of them. It's about the same, maybe. Heavier than the early ones by a long shot.

It's lighter than some of the more serious ones (Monstrous Regiment or Night Watch, maybe), but there's plenty of other reasonably light ones.

In terms of recommendations - maybe the Moist Von Lipwig books, Going Postal and Making Money. They're reasonably similar in tone, have some fun Vetinari stuff, and demonstrate a lot of the pseudo-Steampunk Victorian Ankh-Morpork. Or The Truth, which is similar but has a different lead.

Beyond that, it really depends. The Rincewind/Wizards books might be good, though some of the early ones aren't the best. If you like Good Omens, maybe the Death and Susan books?

I think Guards! Guards! is a good one to show off Vetenari. Also Feet Of Clay.

Honestly? I would still love to know why some people see a good, well-developed character in the orc instead of a downright sue/stu. Please folks, tell me. I'm waiting.

Oh joy, someone necro'd an old thread just to complain. There is such a void to be filled.

Oh look, someone who prefers to people either keep their opinion to their own if he does not share them or open new threads en masse just cause the relevant one is a itty-bitty too old.

How's about you actually answer what my question? If you can.

^^ Sorry, I haven't read the book yet.

And, if you want to discuss Discworld, I have made a thread about the series in general. Feel free to join if you want.

Well, I had thought it better to go to the specific thread for such a question (Hey, on other boards I'd likely have gotten a response similar to yours if I would not have used a specific thread. The net is weird). Might join your thread, too perhaps.

Personally I don't think UA is too bad a book. as for Nutt being/not being a sue, I'm of the opinion he isn't. Oh, sure, he's got all the characteristics of a sue, but is also angsty as hell for most of the book, and just about capable of going orc-crazy.

I feel a bit bad about digging this thread up, but let me state this: After a bit of thinking I have come to the conclusion the thing that bugs me so much about the book and especially about Nutt is/might be that there's too much story for the book as it stands. Perhaps if the whole orc-business would have been removed from UA and giving its own book, set entirely in Überwald, things might have turned out better. Mainly as there would have been more space to develope the characters. As it is the books feels a bit as if, to stay with football, you have two matches being played at the same time on the same field.

Not to mention the crippling self-worth issues.

Though is it crippling. It never actually stops him from doing anything. He usually just asks it after he did something and the text told us how impressed people are. *shrugs* To elaborate: Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that he does not have a self-worth issue. But it's not really crippling. Yes, he does do things because he thinks he needs to do them to achieve worth, but it is a bit fuzzy, isn't it. As stated above, it might have worked better if he would have been given his own book instead of feeling rather out of place here.

yeay, a flame war.

I liked UA. Maybe because I am German, and therefore know a little more about Football than americans (who complain about the book being about football all the time)

There wasn't enough football if you ask me. Yes, Pratchett is british, but that should not have kept him from importing some of the wonderfully odd quotes from german players and trainers. And have some shout-outs to things from outside the isle. It's a pity. (The part that is about football actually just takes up about a fifth of the book.)
