Postin it here because all the old threads were locked. The Image Picking thread on this trope pointed out some some issues I have with the new name.

The Cavalry has this

When it is specifically a vehicle with heavy firepower, it is also a "Gunship Rescue moment".

But Gunship Rescue should just be about getting rescued by a gunship with quick extraction.

The dead examples (not fitting the name very well) are those who get a "Gunship" or other vehicle (singular) coming as backup.

EDIT: I am thinking the trope name is just far to specific than the trope description itself.

Well, if it doesn't have any firepower, how's it a gunship? Gunship Rescue does say in the description that the rescue craft is "carrying enough firepower to turn the tide in favor of the heroes."

It is shameful for a demon to be working, but one needs gold even in Hell these days.

Yes but the fact that its a "rescue"  *

implies that they get in the picked up and evacuated to safety, while the trope is anyone who gets backup with a vehicle with guns and can continue to fight.

The Trope Name is just too specific for the trope description. So maybe split? Dead examples is a bad title... sorry.

No, it doesn't. Rescue also implies being rescued from an impossible situation by someone arriving to help you out; as with the "to bring something out of danger" and "to save" meanings. Getting rid of the danger is rescuing just as much as getting away from it. You can rescue people from a burning house either by carrying them to safety or by putting out the fire; the word isn't as specific as you're implying.

Think of it as "Gunship to the rescue!" Makes perfect sense with that version of "rescue," no?

I guess, every time I hear "rescue" its more like "get this guy to a doctor".

I guess I am stupid. (and tired)

No, you're just wrong. Being wrong does not make you stupid, it makes you honest. smile

Hmm, It's more like this

  • The protagonist and his Nakama surrounded by enemies.
  • Gunship comes, doing a strafing run so that enemy's advancement halted.
  • Gunship rescuing the Protagonist and his team.

So Firepower comes into play, it's called a GUNship for a reason...

About the difference with The Cavalry

  • Choice 1: the Heroes SHOULD RETREAT BY THEMSELVES instead while the cavalry is stalling enemies.
  • Choice 2: Heroes join The Cavalry to beat enemies.

So, Gunship Rescue, more than anything FOCUS with team extraction, while the Cavalry AREN'T, their main task is to attack enemies while giving the heroes option what to do next.

Pardon if I'm wrong

So this thread seems to be forgotten. Can we lock it up and remove that banner on top of the article?
