Think I saw that a while back. Liked the video - it shows that actually there is nuance there. It does seem to posit that people critiquing the issues in F3 either had a lot of nostalgia for F1 / 2 or didn't really look beyond the surface.

Now, F3 had its issues, but I loved it as a game. And I think it did definitely carry the love of the former games with it.

I like FO 3 just fine, my only problem is that I just can't get into the sidequests for the game. I just end up finishing the main plots of the game and DLC.

Yeah, there were a few issues - I agree with the common issue that it should have just been set AFTER the war. 200 years feels too long, without more of the Capital Wasteland being wrecked.

The sidequests felt more incidental, less tied in. I find a lot of FO 4 like that. But the main story and characters I actually enjoyed a fair bit.

Also anyone know how I can get FO 3 to run on my computer? I run it on Windows 7.

It's a bit of a problem considering as soon as I load any mods, the game crashes.

Yeah, damn the old x86 architecture. It's why I'm eagerly awaiting my favorite Skyrim mods to be converted to Special Edition, because damn, Fallout 4 is extremely stable even with all the mods I've loaded.

Okay tried that, and it still won't work. I'm getting the feeling I'd have to turn off all my mods.

Okay tried that and suddenly the game runs smoother than silk.

I used to be able to run Fallout 3 with a lot of mods on my old computer when I still used Windows 7. You're using Nexus Mod Manager, right?

Well, other than using Nexus Mod Manager and Fallout Script Extender, most of the work is just figuring out load order. I guess if you want to get mods to work you can always try the old "load one mod at a time, run the game to see if it crashes or not" method.

Okay I found the problem, there was a load conflict for files that didn't exist.

Nice. Once you've had your fill of Fallout 3, I'd recommend A Tale of Two Wastelands, which is basically New Vegas with the entirety of Fallout 3 modded in, so you can have your Lone Wanderer go from the East Coast to the west.

I'd prefer keeping my Lone Wanderer and my Courier separate.

I so want TTW and all the other mods... Just a little bit longer. Worried about weird mod conflicts but Fallout is supposed to have a couple things to keep everything in order. Plus I have only a handful of mods I care about. I have seen load orders that go on forever.

As for "it has been 200 years, that is nothing. Radiation is around forever so far as I know. DC would have been the biggest target and received the most damage. New Vegas had House.

Nuclear Radiation would've disappated to near harmless levels due to nuclear explosions having short half lives.

All the nuclear reactors however.

I didn't watch the video. Two hours is too long.

But I mean, obviously Fallout 3 is going to be compared to the previous games. It was styled as a sequel. And while it's certainly not a bad game — I've poured enough hours into it to agree with that, and it doesn't just feel bigger, it is a lot bigger than either of the previous games — but I do think the main conflict is kind of dumb (just not very self-aware), and a lot of the writing and voice-acting for the NP Cs has that blandness I associate with Skyrim. The sheer size of it makes up for a lot, though, and gameplay-wise it is fun.

The nuclear radiation I can live with because Fallout explicitly works on the 50's understanding of nuclear physics, where radiation was this dangerous thing that would last forever but is also safe enough to put in cereal. The much bigger problem is the ridiculous amount of Ragnarök Proofing. Even if DC wasn't bombed and people just stopped maintaining the buildings, pretty much everything would be dust two hundred years later. The state of the city works fine if it's ten or twenty years after the War, but not two hundred.

And that decision to have the game set so long after the War followed into New Vegas and 4, where people are still living in ramshackle ruins and shanties that a: would have naturally been long gone by then and b: would have been torn down and replaced with new (albeit simple) buildings.

Hell, the extent of the destruction in the first game was such that people were basically doing that already, 80 years on. But it's definitely cooler to wander around inside the ruins themselves, and I guess the 200 years thing is because they really, really wanted to reuse the Enclave and Brotherhood. If they hadn't used the Enclave, though... Well, I would have liked that better for a couple of reasons.

I understand why they wanted to follow after the first two games, I just don't think they should have bothered. They probably could have found a way to use the Enclave no matter the timeline. In fact, that could have added some interesting moral gray to the organization, as they are the last of the legitimate American government. Two hundred years later, that doesn't really matter, but ten or twenty years after the War, when most of its members used to be senators and CIA agents and all that? There's a strong argument that they should actually be in charge. Obviously they're assholes and everything is their fault, but they'd still have more legitimacy than the bunch of wackos who think bloodline matters in a democratic government.

They wouldn't have been able to use the Brotherhood of Steel, since there's no way they got all the way to DC in just twenty years, so they probably would have ended up using a Suspiciously Similar Substitute. Which... I probably would have been fine with. 3's BoS was interesting enough, but it wasn't the fascist organization from the first two games.

I think they just liked the names. "Brotherhood of Steel." "Paladins." "Scribes." The BOS does have that going for them. But given the direction F3 took them in, they could have been any group of ragtag powered-armoured soldiers. The United States must have been lousy with them by the time of the war.

Oof, is it a general CTD or infinite loading screen bug?
