It’s fitting that your reward for serving a fucked up system is that you get sent to hell afterwards.

And now to volume two of Bleach, chapters 8-16.

    Thoughts
Holy shit this is getting REALLY fun. Now that I can see Chad in action, I immediately like him. Dude doesn't give a fuck, he up and RIPS A FUCKING UTILITY POLE OUT OF THE GROUND to beat on some Hollows...and he can't even see the Hollows! I don't care if it doesn't make any sense how he's that strong, dude is cool...and yet I'm dreading that he's probably gonna lose relevance somewhere down the line. Shame cuz damn, the goodbye he gave to the ghost kid in the parakeet was cute. Also, Rukia gets in some more ass-kicking and honestly? She's already my favorite, and I like her dynamic with Ichigo. I can see why so many people ship them. Also kinda liked seeing Chad pull a fastball special with her. But hey, the main protag is Ichigo, and...I'm liking him even more. We get a tiny bit of attention toward his siblings and...y'know, I legit didn't know before I started reading Bleach that Ichigo even had siblings. I guess I'm used to shonen protags being single children (or maybe they lose relevance later on, wouldn't surprise me), but it makes Ichigo a distinctive character to me. He's a delinquent with a chip on his shoulder, he's sarcastic and kicks butt when he needs to (or when he feels like), but he has a good heart, and his family life is kind of messy. And we get more worldbuilding here too! A shop run by a guy who looks like Snufkin from the Moomins, modsouls, and some uh...pretty shady implications regarding the way Soul Society is run. It already feels like Kubo had a bigger picture for the story planned out at this point, I'm intrigued.

[up][up]Not serving, thriving in.

Though to be fair, that also happens to strong Hollows, as well.

a guy who looks like Snufkin from the Moomins

Funnily enough, Kubo has confirmed that Urahara was inspired by Snufkin.

I assure you, I'm a completely trustworthy person.

Man Aizen losing his shit is so fucking surreal man.

Also wow everything he says here takes a whole new light with all that we've learned about the Soul King.

Indeed! I really hope they have time and opportunity to expand upon the subject of the Soul King in the anime adaptation, since most of the juicy stuff was confined to the novels and I wish it had been in the manga instead.

More important than the stuff the novels told about the Soul King is imo what they didn't tell about his grander importance and influence. Not to mention, the vast majority the novels revealed might not even be true, since Ichibee was twisting the truth to paint the picture that helps his agenda the most.

     Thoughts
...fuck. Just...fuck. The whole angst with Ichigo's dead mom and how he blames himself for her death just...goddamn. It hits pretty hard. I kind of like this angle to Ichigo's character. He doesn't want to be the greatest whatever like some shonen protags, he just wants to protect people. It's nice. And his relationship with Rukia keeps deepening, which I really appreciate. Also appreciated Ichigo's dad here. I didn't think of him as being much more than a doofus beforehand, but he's got a bit of depth to him, I like it. I also think it's kind of nice that Ichigo doesn't actually beat the Hollow here. This bastard is still creeping around for later. But damn, this was nice.

There's a reason people regarded Bleach as the most mature of the Big Three early on. I distinctly remember a good amount of elitism from Bleach fans dismissing One Piece and Naruto as being childish.

Ironic considering Bleach does have its fair amount of humor same as any other shonen

Yeah, like, Bleach has some humor, it's just not completely cartoony like One Piece...but comparing Bleach to One Piece is apples and oranges (and I guess Naruto would be bananas in this metaphor or something).

I think its more like Yu Yu Hakusho.

Both shows do star rough and tumble teenagers that give off an air of matureness.

And heavily involve the spirit world. I always saw Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, and Shaman King as its own trio of sorts.

     Thoughts
That chapter with Kon's little misadventure trying to find someone else to take care of him was funny. Bleach can be pretty angsty and serious but then you have this doofy little teddy bear with an artificial soul created by a potentially amoral experiment by Soul Society, and he's being tossed around and beaten like a dirty rug. It's hilarious. Also, Rukia...god, she is absolutely my favorite character. She's the primary source of exposition and can be very serious while serving as a good friend and partner to Ichigo, but also...she's a dork. A Soul Reaper who's been around for god knows how long and yet she's easily stumped by juice boxes and distracted by gourmet rice dumplings. I even love how Kubo swaps between depicting her on-model and off-model. The goofy off-model drawings make her look like an overcaffeinated kitty. The whole story with the goofy TV medium dude was fun, and now we're up to the introduction of a new character and a new bit of lore: the Quincy archer Uryu Ishida. Also, sidenote, there's this bit of art in Chapter 32 with Orihime and Tatsuki laying down listening to some music, and uh...that shit's pretty gay, not gonna lie. Really wish Tatsuki had become a more prominent character, I like her dynamic with Orihime.

I might be misremembering but I BELIEVE Tatsuki had a lot more development planned that was sacrificed once it became clear that the Reapers were the proverbial golden geese of the cast.

I kind of feel like the original plan to keep Ichigo’s friends as the core main cast seemed better, but that might be one of those things where it SEEMS better because it DIDN’T happen. Grass is greener and all that.

Honestly, outside of Chad and Orihime (who I already know become important players later on), Tatsuki is the only one of the students that I like. Ichigo's two other guy friends are so boring and forgettable that I don't really care about them, and I kind of shrug my shoulders at most of Orihime's gal pals. It doesn't help that their "friendship" is kind of nonexistent in practice. The closest bond Ichigo has so far is with Rukia, and I *love* that dynamic. Seriously, I get why people ship them so much, it's just too hard not to. Snarky, mutually supportive, good banter, I love it.

Bleach's first arc may as well be an entirely different series from what it would become after Soul Society.

Its interesting that Kubo did have more arcs planned with the Karakura Town residents but he was told to hurry it up with the Soul Reapers.

Though considering the series was not doing so hot and the Soul Society arc is now generally regarded as the best part of the series, it was probably the right decision at the time.

How could you not like Keigo and Mizuiro?

Of all the human characters that got pretty much dropped since they weren't part of the core cast, I wish we got something more out of Don Kanonji.

Kanonji became the protagonist of a novel series and even earned the respect of multiple Arrancar, a Quincy, and Kenpachi. And he actually drove a car through a Garganta while Cien and Kenpachi chased him.
