Wow, we're still talking about that stupid Lady of War crap?
Can't we just wait a few weeks or something? :V
@hamburger I don't think bankai is a gimmick per se but I agree with the gist of your statement.
The gotei was caught off guard by the quincies and it was pretty pretty dumb for four captains to go bankai against opponents that they taught could seal them.
With Gaara of the rukon district Zarakid (good nickname Wander), we have four in story child prodigies: Zarakid, Hitsugaya, Gin, and Kaien. But how Zarakid got his zanpakuto is interesting.

"We" aren't. I am, because I haven't yet, and wanted to spell out why we should shut the fuck up about it for the moment.
I know I might sound full of myself, but (O-Ren Ishi-i mode on) "As your Leader (only like 2 people call me that) Role Model, I encourage you from time to time, and always in a respectful manner, to debate issues and tropes. If you're unconvinced that a particular application is the wisest, speak up, but allow me to convince you and I promise you right here and now, no subject will ever be taboo. Except, of course, the subjects banned by FastEddie. The price you pay for bringing up extensive negativity or derails no one gives a crap about is... I collect your fucking head. Just like this fucker here. Now, if any of you sons of bitches got anything else to say, NOW'S THE FUCKING TIME!"
Where people who don't go through the academy get their swords from is really the biggest question I have about this chapter, and actually ties in well with it going on concurrently with Ninja Ninja.
If the sword is something someone focuses their own personal latent power on, could something else be used in its stead?

The sad, REAL American dichotomyCan't Zaraki just materialize his Zanpakutou like Ichigo did with Zangetsu?
I'm tsundere for Sui-Feng.That still doesn't answer jack.

The sad, REAL American dichotomyIchigo was a special case. So I guess Zaraki may be a special case too.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIts possible he just stole a Zanpakutou and imprinted himself on it...but that's hardly as awesome as actually making one on his own.
EDIT: That's Holo? But she looks like a child as your avatar!

I'm tsundere for Sui-Feng.Goddammit! I'm agreeing with you again.
Actually I think the reason Ichigo had a Zanpakuto is because he's a Substitute Shinigami. In order to become one, you have to be pierced by a Zanpakuto, so it doesn't surprise me that he got an Asauchi in that transfer. Even after unlocking his own Shinigami powers, he still had the Asauchi that Rukia gave him.
Actually, the whole process of someone becoming a substitute shinigami could possibly explain that person getting a sword. I do wonder how he got his own sword though. I forget how he went from Rukia's stuff and his bigass sword to Urahara's training and the War Cleaver.
Still doesn't explain Zarakid having a zanpakuto that's apparently his, and that he kept.

The sad, REAL American dichotomyShe didn't after the transfer.
And no, it wasn't, but I wasn't saying she gave him an exact copy of her sword. Just that because a Zanpakuto is needed to transfer Shinigami powers, it might transfer a piece of itself which became Ichigo's Asauchi.
To me, that makes more sense than spontaneously creating an Asauchi.

Ichigo lost the powers that Rukia gave him when Byakuya cut him down. He then 'awakened' his own powers when subjected to Urahara's training. He then lost them when he used the Final Getsuga Tenshou. It kinda makes me wonder though: did he really get his powers back, or is he just using 'borrowed' power from the Gotei 13. If so, that sword Haschwald broke isn't really Tensa Zangetsu? He has to rebuild Zangetsu and his own powers in Ouetsu's version of the shattered shaft.

I'm tsundere for Sui-Feng.She had already achieved shikai by that point, so wouldn't give him her sword give him that ice thingy she has?
I think he just used her power on top of his own to create his own sword. It never had the look of the generic unreleased sword right from the beginning. Isn't that an indication that it was never an asauchi? I think he just spontaneously created it and what Ouetsu or whatever did was just make a mass produced sword that anyone could use.

If I'm right, then Haschwald did Ichigo a favor by breaking 'Tensa Zangetsu'. It actually makes sense in the context of what we know he's undergoing at the hands of the Royal Guard: Kirinji brings his body back to peak condition, Hikifune optimizes his reiatsu, and now Ouetsu is rebuilding Zangetsu. They're actually re-awakening his powers.
EDIT: The fact his 'original' Zanpakutou remained broken and was so easily destroyed by Benihime is symbolic of the fact he was only using borrowed power that was gone by that point.

I'm tsundere for Sui-Feng.

It will be when I say so!
And... it actually isn't finished yet. Considering the trope is based on her personality when and how she fights, and we know she's specifically fighting a certain way now that isn't how she normally fights, we would have to see her fight basically anyone else to establish it properly.
It also is something that could be much better conveyed in anime.
So basically, at the moment, it is definitely too early to call, and shouldn't be applied until it is actually known.
