No more Mr. Nice Guy / No more Mr. Clean / No more Mr. Nice Guy / They say, "he's sick, he's obscene!"But could you not also argue that many people do view music less as a creative outlet and more as a an objective thing you have to do a certain way to be good at? The people who view it less as a form less subjective and more objective?
Obviously that’s not the only way you can view music, and I personally don’t really, but I’d argue it is a valid way to appreciate music on its own.
HuzzahI'm just gonna leave this review of Whiplash by a NY jazz musician here...
yeah, you could view it as objective (I also do not and I feel that viewing any art as objective is something of a folly), but that wasn't really my point.
My point is that the film leads on the idea that "suffering is necessary to preserve art", which ultimately makes Fletcher's abuse of Neiman, in a warped way, valid. And in the end, I end up hating both of them because Neiman himself is so narcissistic, it seems like by the end of the movie he doesn't even care about the music, but spiting Fletcher.
Fucked up presentation of jazz aside, it feels like I'm watching one of the sports film where the coach just pushed his players to their emotional limits just to reach this imagined peak as if kindness and nurture makes people soft and stagnant.

And I still wonder if they could ever include Scarlet (Ben) into the Marvel Super Hero Adventures thing. I mean, the Jessica there is the clone one, so why not Ben too?

If there's a book you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. Toni Morrisonthis video does a great job in putting into words one particular reason why I like Monsters University as much as I do: the narrative is particularly resonant for people who have to grapple with challenges put upon them by something they have no control over (like, say, being neurodivergent, or having a physical disability), and it doesn't pretend as if having such a condition secretly puts you in an advantageous position or makes you better than anyone.
I've always loved that it's a movie where Mike doesn't actually get what he wants in the end, but he ends up with something that we know eventually ends up being much better for him. The place he ends up plays to his strengths rather than amplifying the one particular flaw he can't help (perhaps even moreso when taking the end of the original film into account too). Thinking back on it there's been a bunch of times in my own life where for whatever reason I've had to readjust and figure out what works for me vs. blindly following what other people do. S'only natural that I'd find a lot to like in a character with the same kind of journey.
funnily enough I have my Mike shirt on as I'm typing this out. we're LOYAL dammit

@Taco
I've heard that before, but the way the film presents certain moments (the bleeding on the drum set and the final performance at the end) shows him in a state that seems almost as if he's at some sort of peak performance like although Fletcher is abusive, it was somehow worth it order to keep jazz alive so to speak. Like the film is to ambiguous to actually take that side and in the end people with no knowledge of practice or performance will see the abuse as a worthy trade-off for the sake of skill.
