"Excuse me... Miss Sune was it?" Earl said excusing himself with a slight bow, as, sensing fighting imminent, he readied himself to get up at a moments notice, "Commander, he hasn't given us just cause. Upon your request, I am willing to notify security before he does."

Federation Command Conference Room, Earth, Sol

President (Or Commander-In-Chief, depending on who you asked) Adrian Altwood sat at the head of the table. It was traditional, after all, even if he didn't have any involvement in the current matters. This was a military meeting, after all.

There were at least four others at the table with him. 'At least' because assorted figures kept popping in and out, occasionally taking their own seat nearby, with only the nod of one of the four Admirals to indicate approval.

The four Admirals... Altwood had to admit they were more important than him at this point. They'd taken on an almost mythical status lately.

Admiral Salisar lead them, as the oldest and most experienced of them. When Altwood himself was only a lowly crewman onboard the original Aterion, Salisar had been commanding fleets as one of the youngest Admirals ever. By now, having ascended to Major-Admiral, his position at the top was undisputed. His ability was unquestioned as well- The Lamia Incident had proven that... The first one, anyways.

Admiral Lean was next in seniority, a thin, pale and smooth-talking former politician. People equated him to a snake, and that was accurate in the extreme- Lean, despite his facade of being a caring but stern leader, was more calculating than anyone Altwood had ever met.

Admiral Burton was the third of the group, and one of the least known. He'd been known more for lucky breaks than tactical genius, although his skill at three-dimensional thinking was on par with computers at times. While he was terrible at attacks, no one could hold an atmosphere like him.

And the last... Altwood didn't know much about Admiral Zazeal except what rumors came with his morning coffee. The man had either methodically eliminated every single possible bit of evidence for his existance, or had simply never existed before joining the Admirals. Nevertheless, rumors persisted that he'd been one of the Generals on Aeris... The ones who had been willing to do anything for victory. Since no concrete evidence was available, and Altwood wasn't willing to question the integrity of one of his own officers during a war, nothing could be done.

"We know for certain that the Confederacy fleets are amassing somewhere in their space. And we also know their probable target," Salisar was saying. "Prolomar's the only place they could be headed at this point."

Zazeal shook his head. "A drilling platform? They wouldn't send their entire force for something like that. If anything, an attack on Prolomar would be a diversion, away from the Federation systems bordering the sector. What would they hope to gain otherwise?"

"A supply of mythril?" Salisar hazarded. "I understand your reasoning, but hear mine. The station being constructed over Prolomar is being built to hold cargo freighters- Easily convertable to warship docks." Burton, who was in command of the area's defense, looked guilty. "As an obvious staging point, it's the highest value target in the area right now."

"But if we commit fully to defending it, they could move on any of the surrounding outposts that we possess," Lean mused, steepling his fingers. "So couldn't that reasoning be their entire plan? Of course, once you start thinking like that..." The corners of his mouth lifted. "You start going in circles, yes?"

Zazeal nodded. "Dividing our forces might be the only option."

"Keeping them hyperspace ready, yes."

"It will take much mythril to power them for that many quick jumps, if the Confederacy does indeed strike at multiple points." Salisar looked at Altwood, the first person to do so. "Would you approve its use?"

"Yes," the President or Chief said, "Although we'll have to start requisitioning it soon..."

Shinus, The Capitol of Shahal

Dor stepped out of the car that had brought him this far. His injuries had been patched up, his crew returned to their units or home for leave, and he himself had been debriefed. To put it simply, the Inspiration hijacking had never occured, or at least never failed. Instead, Dor had somehow managed to attacked the Federation's elite Frame pilots and steal one of their transports.

He wondered how he felt about that.

The streets of the capitol were as empty of cars as usual when he walked through them- Remnants of old machines still littering its sidewalks. The passerby recognized him from the news, and steered clear, only staring briefly before returning to the swirls of motion on these city sidewalks.

Dor's home was one of the original hab-domes, built so many years ago. He'd been given it along with the status of 'Captain', and he'd lived here for almost a year now.

When he opened the door, a smaller figure literally covered in coats tackled him. Dor looked down at his sister, who was stared back with admiration written on her face... and maybe a trace of fear. "Brother! I saw you on the TV!" She pointed at the small screen mounted on one of the walls. It was still showing pictures of himself and the captured transport. "Did you really do all that?"

Dor paused. "Would the Council lie to you?"

A frown. "Yes. They lied about the wheat farms working."

"They did work, just badly!" Dor was surprised at the annoyance he felt. "Anyways... Would the Emperor lie to..." He paused. "Would I lie to you?"

The girl giggled and started listing off various occasions where he had, in fact, eaten her dessert when they were children. "But... you did, didn't you?" she asked. "You fought those jerks off, right?"

Dor nodded. "Yes, I did." He bent down to talk on her level. "Remember, you're safe as long as I'm in the army. We're safe. No more scavenging, eh?"

She nodded as well. "Pork!" she exclaimed, the almost precious meat that she'd become infatuated with.

"Pork indeed. I think there's some left in the container." Dor walked away, leaving his sister to go watch the screen again.

He couldn't back out now. Fanatical loyalty was what they wanted, and what he gave. He couldn't go back to what he'd had before. Even if that meant getting shot in the foot again, he wouldn't abandon his position, not for all the freedom in the world.

If it meant they both didn't have to steal scraps from trash cans, Dor would gladly give up even his own life.

A secret place...

There were over a dozen of them now, over a dozen people important enough to know where this place was and a little of what it was for.

Some of them were from the Confederacy, some from the Federation, some from other groups altogether. They each had their own goals and agendas, all branching off onto different paths, eventually. But for now, it was more convenient to pool their resources.

Only a few of them were here today, the rest being need in other parts of the galaxy. It was comforting to know the wheel was still turning.

"Everything's gone as we'd hoped." The first voice, a dry female, sounded surprised. "Both factions have moved astonishingly quickly. We're anticipating open battle in a matter of weeks or even days."

"They fell for the bait." A self-satisfied, gruff male voice. "Was it really so easy?"

The woman laughed. "Not easy at all. We've got almost a hundred people in either government. It took every one of them to keep the true nature of the peace conference under wraps. Heaven knows how they managed it last time."

"Last time?" Another man, this time confused and nasally. "What's that mean, then?"

"Oh, right, you wouldn't know... Well, listen, a-"

There was a loud beep from the corner of the room. All eyes turned in surprise. They hadn't expected a remote call.

A familiar face appeared on the screen. "Oh," the nasal-voiced man said, paling. "Mr-"

"No names, please." The newcomer spoke with a smooth, charismatic voice, marking him as a politician in most people's minds. He'd been one of the first here, and nobody understood his motivations, or what he stood to gain. "I've got to congratulate you all, and everyone not present." A few of those here smiled and nodded, but most didn't move at all. "I'm pleased to report that the product has begun its distribution throughout the Lambdadelta colonies. It is, as of now, undetected, but unfortunately one shipment may be compromised, if we're unlucky. I have several of my best men and women working on keeping it safe, but I've taken the liberty of acquiring outside help."

"You're convinced they'll all make it? And be concealed successfully?"

"I know it. Before long, our seeds will be scattered throughout the galaxy, and the olive branches will grow." They were used to this, these bizarre metaphors. They'd given him the nickname the Gardener, out of his earshot. Probably.

A pause, and an deep breath. "We've chosen this path," the Gardener said, "as the ones who will come out on top. Ours goals, whether they are peace, profit, or anything, are coming closer. No regrets."

Then, a final word. "Ciao..."

Jaedong winced. Such a threat would make any man think twice about saying another word.

"Kekeke. I switch sides, your higher ups make me a Knight. I provide you with Federation technology in the form of my frame, as well as a better pilot than you could ever hope to get otherwise."

"A Knight? Don't make me laugh. A Knight is a position of honor, you? A turncoat? Want to be a Knight? You'd be lucky if you'd be allowed to shine a Knight's boots. Furthermore, how do I know that you're not just pretending to defect in order to spy for the Federation? I'm not stupid."

Good. The trashes weren't complete idiots.

"Fair enough. You're right to be suspect. Would you be suspect if I turned over one of my fellow Aces into your custody along with his frame? And also, I'm fairly certain the Confed's higher ups do not share your view on what exactly a Knight is. Search me, take my posessions, and bring me into your custody. Let me talk to your superiors at the very least."

Earl loosened slightly, a free prisoner was promising. He awaited his commander's orders and questioned the judgement of the apparent Ace.

"You will not see my superiors, trash" Lorraine balked, spitting the Fed pilot's insult back at him. "If you want me to speak plainly, the majority of people you'd call 'my superiors' are either too anti-Federation to do anything but execute you, or too honorbound to...do anything but execute you."

"However. If you're committed, perhaps we can work something out. I should warn you, that I can completely assure you that you will never be a Knight, you could serve in our military for 500 years and never be a Knight. The highest you could hope to climb on that ladder would be the rank of Honorary Frame Pilot."

"That is my only offer." Lorraine stated firmly, emphasizing "only" and hoping the Fed pilot would refuse.

Kekekeke. The girl was quite something. Perhaps she had too much faith in her superiors. Jaedong had found that most of the higher ups in any large organization, even the military, had some sort of disregard for ethics.

"Works for me. And if I'm not a Knight, it's only your own combat capabilities that will be hindered. Now, if you take my suggestion and have a plan to lure the Fed Aces in, that's fine with me. Otherwise, I have a simple plan to get both my frame and and one of the Federation Aces to your ship."

Lorraine was almost surprised. Almost.

She rolled her eyes again.

"Ugh, fine, whatever. If you can get him, her, or it aboard our ship by the time we leave, I'll fill out your paperwork."

Lorraine produced a small slip of paper and a pen from nowhere in particular and scribbled down the name and location of her crew's ship.

"Here."

She tossed the paper in his general direction, not particularly caring if he caught it or not.

Sune paused for moment. "Wait, you guys said you're Cents, right?"

"I have to warn you. You had better withdraw that offer, or whatever you do with that jerk, do it subtley. If he reaches the ears of Humboldt, the sleazeball I just met It could only mean -trouble- for all."

"That's of no relevance, Earl, wasn't it? What matters here is the consequences after you have left this planet, that might happen. Once we're outside this rock, you'll return being a knight, Humboldt will return to be a fleet lord, I'll return to be a mercenary with shady background, and what is more important, that jerk can become quite the liability.Do not be so naive" She moved a piece, different than Maxwell intended to.
