This thread reminds me; do we have a trope for Great White Hope yet?

Sony haven't exactly thrown out brilliant business decisions as of late, I imagine they're losing a shiton of money on the PSP Go.
Oooh, reminds me of a joke—

Stadler: "Ever heard of the Sony Bean?"
Waldorf: "Nope."
Stadler: "Neither did anyone else!"
Stadler and Waldorf: "HO-HO-HO-HO-HO-HO-HO!"

Apparently not, rjung. Unless it's under a different name, of course.

I just learned from someone commenting on a recent GoNintendo article (it's worth a read because Sony is so hilariously full of itself) that the Move has absolutely no pointer capabilites whatsoever, the IR pointer being one of the best things the Wiimote has.

Well from what I've played at GDC, it's the exact opposite of a Wiimote, with the pointing ability completely gone (the very reason Wii menus are so easy to navigate, a very very good thing for casual gaming).

In place of being able to 'point' with the thing, it basically points at you, it's like playing in front of a mirror, which isn't exactly a good core game mechanic (watching yourself play with something has very little good core applications at best). Video games, core or casual, are always played head on, not mirrored...

What.

Epic fail, Sony.

It costs $100?

This looks like a good time to bring up Five hundred and ninety-nine US dollars!

They said less than $100. Which usually means $99.99.

Technically that's true; Sony can't duplicate the way the Wii works without infringing on Nintendo's patents, so they came up with this alternate method of putting the camera on the TV and the lights on the controllers (the Wii reverses the setup). All of the Move's "pointing" capability works by having the PSEye "see" the Move's LED and extrapolating (guessing) what the user intends to point at. If that sounds terribly imprecise to you, then you're smarter than a Sony fanboy.

I also suspect the Move won't easily determine how close/far you move the controller towards/away from the screen. The Wii uses two IR light sources (in the sensor bar), so it can perform a simple triangulation to get that data. Since the Move only has one light source per controller, it won't be able to do that.

I'd like to just mention that I still find it really amusing that, on the Wii, the sensor bar is what actually sends information while the remote is what receives info.

Sounds like the patent-related bullshit that caused all non-Nintendo D-Pads to be a different shape.

Well, Nintendo knows that their competitors will try to ape whatever they were doing — they were already predicting knockoffs from Sony and Microsoft back in 2005 — so it's understandable why they'd be paranoid enough to patent everything they can. Not that different from any other tech company, really.

My negative feelings in the last post were more directed at the ridiculous patent system than at Nintendo themselves. They're doing what makes money.

$99.99. That's one cent less than $100. But OVER $100 after taxes. And That's Terrible

Well, Sony's released their ad for the Move, starring good ol' Kevin Butler, Sony's Vice President of made-up departments. (This time it's "Realistic Movements", a damn telling sign of what to expect from this ad if I ever saw one)

My reaction: Way to keep it classy, Sony.

Seriously though, if this thing bombs, this is gonna be one of the biggest Epic Fails in gaming history. (and more importantly, this ad will become Hilarious in Hindsight)

The sensor bar only serves as a infrared light source, which allows the Wiimote to judge where you're pointing at. In fact, anything that gives off infrared light (like candles) will work, too.

Huh. Now that is interesting.

Wait does that mean sunlight will get picked up as a sensor bar input?

By the way, Nintendo really needs to get on making an IR emitting helmet or headband or something, so that the Wii can start doing that headtracking stuff.

not to mention hand and feet sensors for fighting games. It would be so fun to shoryuken a guy by actually doing the motions.

Close — if you have an open window behind your teevee, the Wii remote (the part with the camera) could pick up sunlight as a source. IIRC, the Wii instructions specifically says to draw your blinds if you have a strong light source behind your TV.

By the way, Nintendo really needs to get on making an IR emitting helmet or headband or something, so that the Wii can start doing that headtracking stuff.
A good way to anticipate what Nintendo will do next is to ask, "Will <X> provide a fun and original experience for people?" I'm not sure head tracking is it, so I wouldn't expect to see Nintendo move in that direction any time soon.

It would crtainly be kind of original for game systems. You'd be able to change your perspective just by turning your head, see things in much better 3d and such and idunno, maybe.

I want a Power Glove attachment for the Wiimote, it'd be fun to have a motion glove controller that is actually GOOD.

With all the hype and revolutionary stuff with X-Box's Project Natal this does seem positively underwhelming. Coming out with a bunch of new add-ons and being "too little, too late" in the new technology is what killed Sega as a console maker.

Microsoft and Sony are bigger richer and smarter than Sega was. They'll survive unless someone high up decides they should stop making games.

They'll survive as long as their console projects are profitable—if they aren't profitable, upper management will shut their shit down. I'm pretty sure the 360 is profitable. I don't know about the PS 3.

Aside from the rather remote possibility of interesting full-body stuff, I think the Wii, Move and Natal can go stuff themselves.

I'm personally more intrigued by the Novint Falcon: Three degrees of freedom (6 DoF attachment in the experimental stages,) one-to-one tracking, no lag, full force feedback. I have yet to try it myself, though I nearly got a SpaceOrb 360 back in the day, but held off because I'd heard bad things about its durability.

The fact you have to buy sony move remotes seperate from one another and have to buy that godawful Eyetoy that no serious gamer has ever bought in the years since it was invented tells me that this is less a serious foray into motion, and more a halfbaked attempt by sony to get their rabid fanbase to buy shitloads of expensive peripherals.

Sony's realized they can make a bit more cash off gullible idiots who think anything is better in HD

Unsurprising, the PSWiimote isn't selling well.

This may not bode well for Kinect - depending on whether it's not selling because it's a casual controller for the PS 3 or just a perceived ripoff of the Wiimote.
