^For context, I'm 100% certain that this is from a "Tea Party" rally, many of such rallies having been criticized from various corners of society about people showing up with signs emblazoned with racist phrases and imagery.
So yeah, this picture would be two guys trying to denounce the accusations of racism in the movement by taking a photo with their black friend and asking if they're racist.
A lot of context to convey in a caption, but I think the picture is fine without a lot of it. The whole point in the picture is still that they're denying being racists by posing in a picture with a black person, which is really the important part of what the trope is about.

^You're getting your TV pundit Washington rallies mixed up. Glenn Beck held the "Restoring Honor" rally; Jon Stewart held the "Rally to Restore Sanity."

And it's 100% real.
