Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

  • Ashiya Douman, Caster of Limbo and the "Beautiful Carnivore," harbored an intense drive to surpass his lifelong rival Abe-no-Seimei that led him to commit numerous atrocities for the sake of becoming all-powerful. Manipulating Amakusa and corrupting the Heroic Spirit Swordsmen in the Shimousa Epic of Remnant, he indirectly causes all the mass murder and sacrifices done there as an experiment for his true goals. He later manipulated Arjuna Over Gods in the Indian Lostbelt into accelerating the cycle of destruction and recreation to cause constant misery, death, and suffering for the inhabitants out of sheer sadistic delight. Allied to the Foreign God and the Crypters, once they're compromised, Ashiya slips away to Hell Mandala where he repeats many of his deeds from Shimusa upon the new denizens. Creating his own means to become a Beast, Ashiya Douman stopped at nothing, not even constant genocide and the destruction of worlds over time and space, if it meant proving his superiority.

Just so it's not longer than Gauron I can do this:

  • Mr. Gates, aka Mister Kalium, is the assigned to head of Amalgam's Execution Squad and a lunatic who kills his own followers for insane jokes or questioning his orders. Attempting to ambush the heroes, Gates targets a public place, uncaring for the innocents caught in the way. Sexually depraved as well, Gates holds twins Yu Fan and Yu Lan under his thumb, possibly subjecting them to assault and when one is killed, uses her body as a puppet to viciously mock the surviving sister.

I'll add now.

What's the Work?

The Trees is a Web Original story that focuses on Thomas Martin, a surgeon who has found a mysterious tree in South America and quickly uncovers a legend that turns out to be real and threatens the entire world. Simultaneously, a tree grows in the middle of Los Angeles that is related to the legend Thomas uncovers and jumpstarts a sinister plan from an ancient entity. Speaking of whom...

Who is Yum Cimil and What Has He Done?

In the 750 A.D., an unnamed commoner rose to power in the Mayan city of Tikal, labeling himself as the son of Yum Cimil, the Mayan god of death, and even adopting the name for himself. During his reign, he was a vicious conqueror and brutal tyrant who would often execute people for petty reasons, such as killing a guard who voiced a complaint against his conquests. Eventually, a civilian uprising rose against him, but it failed and Yum had all of them dismembered and hung around trees to serve as a warning to future rebellions. This strategy worked for a time until another revolt occurred, this time deposing Yum, where they dismembered and hung his head on another tree to get a sense of poetic justice. Unfortunately, Yum conjured a spell to bind his spirit to the tree he was hanged him, allowing him to return as a spirit on Earth. While he couldn't harm anyone physically anymore, he could possess others and unleash plagues onto the world.

To spite his enemies, he conjured a black plague that ravaged the region he controlled and even reached to Europe, killing thousands, if not millions. However, the locals burned the bodies of the infected to ensure that it wouldn't spread further. These fires eventually spread to the tree Yum was hanged on and it was destroyed and while the tree can't be destroyed permanently, it did seal Yum away for a time. In the present day, the tree grows back in the middle of Los Angeles and with it, Yum returns. Since his previous plague failed because it wasn't contagious enough, Yum devises a new and even more potent strain of tuberculosis, which kills its victim within days, if not hours.

Its only known cure is to receive the aura of another tree called the tree of life and since Thomas previously made contact with it, he's safe from the plague. Unfortunately, not everyone was so lucky, so the plague quickly spreads throughout Los Angeles and the rest of the United States, killing thousands. One of Thomas' friends, Anthony contracts the disease, hut Yum decides to possess his body to take a physical form on Earth. In spirit, he takes over Thomas' mind to mentally torment him, largely to spite him for coming into contact with the tree of life and thus being immune to his plague. He even informs him of his plan to use the plague to decimate most of the global population and then rule over the remains.

With his resolve to stop Yum, Thomas confronts Anthony and fights him. However, Yum in Anthony's body holds the upper hand and begins to boil him alive with the sap of the tree in Los Angeles. Thomas' friends intervene by shooting Anthony and thus destroying Yum' vessel, but Thomas has died by then. However, his death is not in vain, as they plan to use his knowledge on the tree of life to develop a cure and undo Yum's work.

Does He Have Any Mitigating Qualities or Freudian Excuse?

Not a single redeeming quality to be found here. His whole Freudian Excuse is that he was overthrown and now wants revenge, but he was overthrown in the first place because he was a tyrant and his whole motive is "Well, if I can't rule, then everyone deserves to die."

Does He Meet the Heinousness Standard?

The only antagonist in the story and he kills hundreds of thousands in his pursuit of power, ultimately planning to cull the glohal population in his final plan. He's a pass.

Final Verdict?

Looks like we still got a few out-of-the-way keeps from Star Wars. I'm talking Legends, too, not the new Disney canon.

To start, here's one from a companion miniseries to the Knight Errant comic called Deluge. Introducing Zodoh the Hutt.

Who is Zodoh? What has he done?

A Hutt crime lord already infamous for dealing in the trade of slaves and the selling of incredibly destructive weapons to whomever can pay his price, Zodoh has more ambitious aspirations—conquering a sector already being warred upon by the ruling brother Sith Lords, Daiman and Odion. Zodoh makes a big announcement to the Sith that they can either play nice and accept his terms of surrender, or he'll start wiping them out.

To prove he's not bluffing, Zodoh unveils weapons called the Stormdrivers, which can manipulate the moisture of a planet's atmosphere and induce flooding on cataclysmic scales. Zodoh floods the small planet of Aqualaris, endangering the thousands of lives there and sweeping away hundreds to the tides who don't manage to evacuate in time. To make matters worse, Zodoh starts a drug epidemic among the lower-class of the planets Darth Daiman rules over to make Zodoh's takeover easier, lacing the food supply of large populations of men, women and children with a despair-inducing Fantastic Drug called "Deluge" to leave them too doped up and powerless to do anything.

Zodoh manages to capture a starfighter pilot named Devaad alongside her crew. Zodoh has Devaad's entire squadron captures, interrogates Devaad for what she knows by having her squadmates tortured, then after promising to let them go after Devaad tells Zodoh everything, fulfills his promise—by letting Devaad's squadmates out of the airlock.

Finally, in the final few issues, Zodoh steps up his game and tries to use the Stormdrivers on Darth Daiman's capital planet of Darkknell, intending to wipe out not only Daiman but all the billions of innocent people he rules over. Zodoh is cheerfully willing to repeat this process on every single inhabited planet in the sector, drowning world after world until the population either cows before him or "learns to hold their breath." Zodoh's Stormdrivers are ultimately destroyed and he's left in the hands of Daiman, who decides to exact vengeance on Zodoh by using all that's left of the Stormdriver technology to rip every single drop of moisture out of Zodoh's body...

Any mitigating factors?

Okay, so the one hesitation I had was that Zodoh is sharing an arc with Lord Odion, who is in the running for the one of the most evil Sith in the franchise—he literally gets high off the suffering and death of others and tries to go full Omnicidal Maniac at the end. Daiman isn't anywhere near as horrible, and though he has a callous attitude toward his citizenry and a bevvy of nasty murders (including what he does to Zodoh) he's not nearly as much of a problem.

The major argument in Zodoh's favor is that, superweapons or no, Zodoh is just a Hutt crime lord. Lord Odion is an extremely powerful Sith Lord with the influence and scale you'd expect of him. Zodoh, on the other hand, attempts to wipe out billions of lives and multiple planets despite ultimately being a Big Bad Wannabe stepping up on a Sith's turf. I don't think there's another Hutt in the franchise, Legends or otherwise, who steps this far up from the typical crime lord/slavery (which Zodoh already regularly indulges in) and attempts to destroy potentially an entire sector of inhabited planets with world-destroying superweapons.

Honestly, I think we're safe.

Conclusion?

Keeper. One of the nastiest Hutts of all time.
