Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Had a thought. Lost it though.

That said, thank you again to Beast for passing this on to me:

What is the work?

Freaky is a 2020 Blumhouse Horror Comedy in which teenaged Millie Kessler is struggling in high school and to figure things out about her life with the passing of her father a year earlier. Things don’t get any simpler when she’s targeted by a serial killer the night before the Homecoming dance is supposed to happen. Then things go even more out of left field thanks to a cursed dagger being used in the attack.

Who is he and what has he done?

The unnamed Blissfield Butcher is a psychopathic middle-aged and apparently homeless man who is rumored to have targeted high school students for decades or at least more realistically since the '90s. He starts the movie on the night of Wednesday the 11th by breaking into a teen girl's house, stealing an ancient mask off the wall and murdering her and three of her friends while stealing an ancient dagger called La Dola used for ritual sacrifices her father collected that the Butcher doesn’t realize is cursed. His killings are committed by means of grisly impalings in the head and torso areas.

The Butcher the next night then attacks Millie at the school and stabs her with the dagger, but it doesn’t kill her and instead ends up causing the two to switch bodies at midnight. The next day, Millie awakes in the Butcher’s dilapidated residence where multiple violently slashed and bloodied mannequins and images are shown. Meanwhile, the Butcher wakes up at Millie’s house and after savagely eating the breakfast given to him, attempts to stab Millie’s sister Charlene "Char", a cop, to death in the back only for Millie’s widowed/alcoholic mother Paula to unknowingly stop him by taking the knife and peak his interest by bringing up the school.

Questioned about the attack at the school by the nosy and vapid Ryler, the Butcher tricks her into a Cryotherapy chamber and freezes her to death and then goes after Millie’s Jerkass wood shop teacher Mr. Bernardi by splitting him down the middle with a buzzsaw. Millie shows up and is able to convince her best friends Nyla Chones and Josh Detmer of what happened to her and then they happen to find the Butcher. He fingers Millie as the Butcher and Millie is forced to flee with Nyla and Josh to avoid being caught by the police.

The Butcher then cozies up to a bunch of jocks (one of which treated Millie harshly as well) and lures out Booker Strode, the nice one who Millie is in love with, to the alley so he can kill him. Millie and her friends save him, capture the Butcher and Millie recites a poem she wrote to Booker that convinces him she’s who she says she is. The Butcher taunts Millie about how pathetic she is and Nyla sticks a gag in his mouth.

The Butcher ends up escaping and nearly killing Josh and his mother, but then goes to the station and steals La Dola away from Millie, Nyla and Booker (intending to let the body swap become permanent). He goes to the Homecoming dance that the students set up when the other one was canceled. The Butcher goes to another alley with the Jerk Jock and two of his friends show up so they can all have their way with "Millie" only for the Butcher to lead them on and then kill two of them with a whiskey bottle and the last one with a chainsaw.

After killing another jock who comes onto Josh, the Butcher is incapacitated and time seems to run out before the switch can happen (has to be before midnight), after which the Butcher gleefully laughs. However, the watch was five minutes fast (Booker’s idea to help Millie not be late to class anymore) and Millie stabs him with the dagger and they switch back. The Butcher is shot and apparently killed by the cops.

Except no...because he fakes dying in the ambulance and ends up escaping (any killings he commits here are not seen or brought up). He goes to Millie’s house and attacks her while taunting her some more and also tries to kill Char and their mother too. After a struggle, Millie gains the upper hand and ends things by viciously running the Butcher through with a broken table leg, killing him for real this time.

Redeeming qualities? Mitigating factors?

Putting it simply, that’s a hard no. He targets other people besides anyone who’s an Asshole Victim and is clearly looking to kill whoever he can at any moment. The Butcher’s clear personality is established with all the scenes he speaks and it’s not just when he’s in Millie’s body, but later back in his own when he taunts her about how pathetic she is. As for the potential motive of wishing to purge away impure teenagers (while being given no indication of being mentally-ill), it’s far more clear that he’s truly just in it for the carnage and nothing more.

Heinous standard?

10 murders over the course of the film in the goriest and most brutal ways imaginable is pretty definitive and the attempted gang rape clearly wasn’t gonna happen and aside from it actually playing more like it would be an orgy instead, he intended to kill before any of it went down to begin with. Also, the only other attempted kills that aren’t his are the cops shooting the Butcher and nearly killing him and then Millie finishing him off later. Rather than set the bar, he annihilates it, so easy pass.

Verdict?

He seems like an easy [tup].

When I say "Invincible Villain" stories, I basically refer to a story that pretty much ammounts to a villain doing evil things and being unstoppable in doing so...with nothing else in between.

Yeah, based on all I've heard of the film, the Butcher is a pretty rote and easy keeper from a fun film. Nicely done.

Sure to the Butcher.

Hey, remember when I made a proposal for someone called the Pigman, and he couldn't be approved because there wasn't enough of a substantial plot revolving around the video he was in?

Well here's one thing I just found out. The creator of the video, Horror Shorts Party? His videos all take place in the same universe, meaning that the dark web video is part of one huge anthology series of horror shorts. So there is a substantial plot.

How do I know this, you may ask? Well, one of his other videos starts with a bonus clip containing a prologue for the video about a man who calls himself "creep". Why would it be there if wasn't in the same universe?

Also, there's one about a real-life Joker, and in it you can see a "missing person" report about a girl who's in the guy's Onlyfans video. Again, why would that even be there if it wasn't the same continuity?

The Pigman video is 2-act. Some kids do a school project, they see a fucked up photo of a dismembered girl (one of 20 in total), a masked psycho comes in and makes one of them watch said dismembered woman get murdered, the guy returns a year later and abducts the protagonist's female friend, and then it ends...

But again, it's part of an anthology series. And I've seen some short vids that are only 1-act with zero continuity nods and still have a CM.

Yes to Butcher, still not sold on the pigman and I wish we'd just leave that one, as the evidence that keeps getting added to the case every couple months has never proven persuasive.

I'll concur with Beast's suggested cuts on the pastas but I'd rather see Nyarly go as well given I note the Invincible Villain thing going on in a short story, characterization seems light and the protagonist just sound like another hopeless, interchangeable figure to be tormented. Uncle Ryan I wanna hear more on. We never meet him in the story and his motives and crimes are just explained to us? That's gonna be a problem for him staying.

[down] After he was downvoted you tried fighting the decision for a bit and now you're returning to it. Unless something significant was missed, please just leave it, it's a settled case.

[up] Wait, Piggy's been brought up by more people than just me? I've only talked about him twice until now, I haven't brought him up in three months, and I only post on this subpage occasionally, so I'm rather oblivious. I mean if the general consensus is that the Pigman can't be approved, I'm fine with it and I won't talk about it again, I just thought everyone should know that his video is part of an anthology series.

And something significant was missed. AGAIN, it's part of an anthology, and I didn't know that until just recently. I mean no offense, but did you actually watch the videos? And I mean all of them?

[up][up][up] Having listened and read the stories with Nyarlathotep and Uncle Ryan respectively, I agree with cutting them. I agree with 43110's opinion on Nyarlathotep and don't have much else to say. As for Uncle Ryan, he suffers from two problems. One, as 43110 said, we're sort of just told about what he did, with no emphasis given to his personality or motives, which veers into Offscreen Villainy territory. Two, the story leaves it ambiguous as to whether Uncle Ryan is a malicious sadist who is fully in control of his actions or if he's legitimately insane who doesn't have a firm grasp on morality. So, yeah, cut him.

Woodsy I'm not upvoting him because other videos have Easter eggs hinting at a shared universe. The videos focusing on him don't have enough of aa plot. Can you let this one go?

Also with Unknown's firsthand on Ryan, yeah, 100% cut, no question.
