Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Thanks, guys!!!

Basicaly...things like this can happen when it's:

A. A small part of the villain's character,

B. The villain has been on the list so long

C. We're dealing with a multimedia franchise like Starcraft where they're overshadowed by the atrocities the villain commits, if you get me.

Yes to Asakura. With Ma-Ma idk if I'd so much call something the creators very publicly created "obscure" so much as she's so nasty in the film proper no one liked the idea of losing her.

Same went for Myrrah when side books gave her a blatantly mitigating backstory which we tried to ignore until it became impossible to ignore even in the games alone.

[tup] Asakura and Razul

Here's my little present to Lighty.

What Is the Work?

Iron Angels (also known as Fighting Madam) is a 1987 movie that not only helped launch Moon Lee’s career, but also the Girls With Guns sub-genre in Hong Kong action movies. It was so successful, it launched a series of sequels, and plenty of copycat Moon Lee films that love putting “Angel” in the titles to capitalize off of her success.

Crime’s rampant in Hong Kong. The only ones who can stop it are the Angels, four people comprised of Moon (guess who plays her?), Elaine, Alex, and Saijo. Skilled with weapons, the Angels must take down an evil triad gang in charge of drug dealing and robbery. From there are a whole bunch of martial arts, gunplay, explosions, torture, and a guy who loses a finger or four.

Who Is She?

Madame Yeung (played by frequent GWG actress Yukari Oshima) is a sadistic, high ranking triad head.

What has she done?

Yeung’s introduced suggesting her boss get revenge on the Interpol agents responsible for torching their opium farm by killing as many cops as possible, which leads to several random policemen killed, with Yeung also having a mob boss from around East Asia killed to corner the drug market. When one of her men disses her for the death of his four friends during the police massacres, Yeung chops off four of his fingers, telling him that he should be proud to still be alive. In her spare time, Yeung resides in her torture den, getting her jollies from watching men being brutally tortured, which she views as a laugh riot.

Killing her boss to usurp control over the gang, when Alex sneaks into her base, Yeung has him captured and tortures him to near death by scraping a sharp needle across his bare chest. Attempting to get into the gold selling industry, Yeung has her men steal trucks containing gold, only to have them buried under cement with her drivers still inside, who die from lack of oxygen; her men then break through the concrete to get the gold inside the trucks.

Supposedly defeated after her martial arts fight with Moon, Yeung grabs an iron rod and attempts to impale Moon with it, but she’s saved by Saijo, who shoots her in the head at the last possible second.

Redeeming Qualities?

Zero.

Heinousness?

So this series includes a trilogy, two spinoffs in the form of Angel Terminators 1 & 2, and a lighter and softer spinoff Angel’s Project.

The main villain of the second movie doesn’t count. He’s a revolutionary soldier who wants to overthrow the government, but not only does he not do much, he dies a graceful loser. The villain from the third movie could count, as she’s a terrorist leader with a decent body count, but she has a pet baby crocodile who she goes “coochy-coochy-coo” over for one scene and never again after that (even the protags think she only likes it because they’re both animalistic predators).

But Yeung? She’s easily the most sadistic villain of the series, has a decent body count as well, isn't afraid to kill her own men, and her love of torture makes her stand out from all the other villains.

Conclusion

I think she’s a keep. Happy birthday, Lighty.

[up] [up] [tup]

Well, here be another EP. Time for another slice of crazy, early-90s Hong Kong Wuxia, with ridiculous fight scenes, over-the-top special effects, tons of High-Pressure Blood, the great Michelle Yeoh right at the peak of her career, and once again Simon Yam playing a meanie of a baddie.

The Film

Holy Weapon, also known as Seven Maidens, is a 1993 wuxia action-comedy directed by Wong Jing, starring Michelle Yeoh as one of the titular maidens. A martial arts period piece set in the Ming Dynasty, Yeoh and a band of female warriors have to unite their powers together to defeat a dangerous enemy that is on an unstoppable killing spree.

Simon Yam, from Bullet in the Head, Full Contact and... er, Dr. Lamb note  plays the main villain of the picture, the awesomely-named Lord Super Sword.

The Candidate in Question

Lord Super Sword is the most powerful warrior in the whole of Japan, with supernatural powers and knowledge in sorcery, which he used to enhance his swordsmanship, making him The Dreaded even in his home country. The warriors of China and Japan are constantly at war with each other to prove their dominance in martial arts, with the Japanese being beaten after every challenge; learning about the powers of wushu, Lord Super Sword decides to personally invade the coastal Ming Dynasty provinces.

Coming to China to establish his dominance in the world of martial arts, Super Sword and his followers embark on a killing spree leaving behind entire mountains of dead bodies, simply to satisfy Super Sword's lust for blood and his self-satisfaction in proving his superiority to his Chinese rivals. Super Sword would challenge entire clans of warriors to fight him, threatening to kill off civilian populations if they refuse, only to delightfully slaughter his challengers and have the survivors tortured, either by Unwilling Suspension, ripped apart alive to pieces, or tied to a rotating wheel where they're roasted slowly over a bonfire.

The Hero of the film, Master Mo-kake, is a Retired Badass warrior who had renounced his life as a fighter to be with his Action Girl fiancee, Ching-sze (Michelle Yeoh). But, accepting a challenge from Super Sword on a one-on-one battle, eager to put an end to Super Sword's rampage, Master Mo and Super Sword squares off in a battle that took place a day before Mo's wedding with Ching-sze, in a valley filled with hundreds of bodies belonging to Super Sword's victims. Master Mo managed to kill off Super Sword's followers and defeat Super Sword, who then promised to leave and come back 3 years later for a rematch.

Unfortunately in the aftermath of the battle, Master Mo, having over-exerted his qi during his battle with Super Sword, which slowly builds up in his body as the rest of the day goes on, ends up suddenly losing control of himself; on his wedding night, Master Mo suddenly goes on a killing spree out of qi-induced rage, and subsequently becomes an outcast. The timely intervention of a sage named "Ghost Doctor", who is longtime friend of Master Mo, managed to quell Mo's rampage, but Mo is forced to renounce his identity as a warrior as Michelle Yeoh's Ching-sze quickly took over the leading role.

Super Sword made his promise to return, 3 years later, with a new band of followers, including his two female acolytes, Butterfly and Spider. After the three-year skip, Super Sword had developed his ultimate skill: the ability to transform himself into a flying CGI sword that can slice through anything, which displaying this ability for the first time, he easily sliced a rival vertically into half. (Seen Here) But to develop this skill requires draining plenty of energy from it's user, and as such Super Sword had his followers abduct numerous virgins for him to absorb their virginity, leaving his victims soulless husks with their life-force sucked away. At one point, two of Super Sword's followers are unable to deliver the virgins he demand, at which point he callously kills both followers without batting an eye.

After using his ultimate ability to defeat a challenger one night, without a fresh virgin at hand, Super Sword decides to replenish his life-force by forcing his acolyte Butterfly to sacrifice her virginity to him, much to the horror of Spider. The subsequent rape Super Sword inflicts has the consequence of draining the victim's youth, but without killing her outright, resulting in Butterfly being reduced to a zombie-like vegetative state, and Spider to leave her former master in disgust.

Spider's Heel–Face Turn ends up being part of a Deus ex Machina for defeating Super Sword; for the only way to overcome Super Sword's ultimate ability, as developed by the "Ghost Doctor", requires the combined powers of seven virgin female warriors, with Ching-sze being the leader. Spider's defection to the good guys had her being the seventh member, but Super Sword's pursuing of the good guys ultimately leads to the Ghost Doctor's death via decapitation.

The final battle eventually had the Seven Maidens, led by Ching-sze, defeating Super Sword's minions and stabbing Super Sword from all direction with their seven blades, turning him into a fine pile of Ludicrous Gibs.

Any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse? Super Sword's motivations are driven entirely by his thirst for power and lust for bloodshed, where in his quest for power he's willing to kill off even his followers to prove his power. No Freudian Excuses are brought up at any point either.

What About the Heinousness Standard?

Well, the movie doesn't have a second villain, other than Super Sword's followers which are just mooks. Spider and Butterfly pre-Heel–Face Turn killed a few people and gives Ching-sze a bit of trouble, but again they're subservant to their master, Super Sword.

Granted, for the most part the movie is a light-hearted action-comedy in the vein of Stephen Chow, but considering it's villain is a power-hungry, bloodthirsty killing machine with a kill-count in triple digits (if the opening valley massacre is any indicator…) Yep, he does seem heinous enough.

Should We Count Lord Super Sword then?

[tup] good enough, I hope
