Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

@nwotyzal & ACW: Eh. I've played worse games. Still enjoyed it for the most part. It's right up there with Styx: Shards of Darkness in terms of infuriating non-endings I've experienced from indie studio games. Granted Shards of Darkness is a much better game.

[tup] The Creature

Get out your smartphones, put on your best hacktivist shirt, and adopt an exaggerated British accent gov’na, because we’re going to venture into the cybernetic criminal underworld of futuristic London.

It's been two weeks since this game's release, so let's get started.

What Is the Work?

Watch Dogs: Legion is the third installment in Ubisoft’s cyberpunk hacker series Watch_Dogs.

A series of massive explosions across London kill thousands, with hacker group DedSec being framed for it. This attacks, led by the mysterious Zero Day, helps Albion executive Nigel Cass to become ruler of London, seeking to make it a city of peace by ratting out criminals and scum who stand to oppose him. Naturally this turns London into a dystopian police state. That’s where the people come in. Surviving DedSec member Sabine Brandt decides that enough is enough.

In order to take down Cass and his empire, she’s going to have to recruit anybody she can, even if it’s literally the entire city of London. With the help of everybody in London and her AI robot Bagley, the newly reformed DedSec do what they can to stop Zero Day and Albion in their ruling of London.

But Cass isn’t alone. Not only does he have the hacker Zero-Day by his side, who helped him set up the explosions, but another ally found underground.

Who Is She?

“Bloody” Mary Kelley is the head of Clan Kelley, and the biggest crime lord in England.

What has she done?

Clan Kelley is involved in human trafficking, organ thieving, drug smuggling, fight clubbing, and gun running. Kelley took over the business after the death of her father and made it what it is today, bringing it online by accepting only cryptocurrency. She has mainly illegal immigrants kidnapped to be either sold as slaves, or killed for their organs, selling her products on the black market. Some are forced to serve her as her own personal servants, with electric chips implanted in their necks that provide a shock should they disobey her. Once Inspector Kaitlin Lau starts investigating her enterprise, Kelley has her captured to be harvested for her organs, though the player character’s able to rescue her in time. The same can’t be said for former DedSec member Angel, whose organs were taken after his death.

It’s revealed later on that Kelley had supplied Zero Day and Albion with the explosives used at the start of the game to blow up parts of London, in return for being made Queenpin of London’s criminal empire. Kelley is also working with Albion on gaining more victims for her operation through Cass’ prison camps, while other gangs are killed by Albion to expand her control. DedSec later launches a servant uprising, with Kelley personally killing and stabbing her attacking servants. Willingly giving herself up to Kaitlin for a light sentencing, Kaitlin instead allows Kelley’s abused servants to personally beat her to death.

Redeeming Qualities?

None whatsoever. Kelley cares not for anybody, not even her family. Once she gained control of her father’s business, Kelley started killing not only her enemies, but her friends and family as well. She’s also one of the only villains in the game to not have any redeeming qualities, or goals of peace.

Heinousness?

Okay, let’s get this out of the way.

“Lucky” Quinn from the original game remains a keeper, as he’s still involved in human trafficking and a bunch of other petty crimes like selling one of his hitmen’s girlfriends into sexual slavery. Plus, he’s such a grinning sadist who revels in his own wickedness, that it makes him stand out.

As for this game? Nigel Cass, despite masterminding the bombings at the beginning, plus London’s dictatorship and a prison camp for illegal immigrants to be harvested for their organs, doesn’t count, as he genuinely cared for his father, his death provoking him into starting his plan of creating a utopian London without humans to ruin it. Same goes for Zero Day, aka Sabine Brandt, who thinks that starting the bombings would implant a hard reset on England and remake the country from the ground up into a better one.

But Kelley on the other hand? Thoroughly despicable. Kelley is involved in basically modern day slavery, assists in a massive terrorist attack that cost the lives of thousands for the sake of power, and has plenty of victims to her name. We see an operating room with dozens of people killed for their organs, while bodies are littered around the basement area.

And before somebody asks… the connections between the Watch_Dog series and Assassin's Creed is in mainly broad strokes. It’s like that X-Files/The Wire connection in that it’s there, but it provides little to the overall story other than a wink and a nod to another popular franchise of Ubisoft’s.

Conclusion

Easy keep. Expect another candidate from the game sometime today.

[tup] to The Creature and Bloody Mary Kelley.

ACW: Okay for a header how does this sound: "Since 1996 the forensic pathologists of the Lyle Centre have examined a variety of corpses and investigated many criminals, including several particularly monstrous individuals."

For quotes we had these three:

  • "You should have seen them running around. Banging into each other. Trying to hide like I couldn't see them, under tables, behind sofas. Shit, man they were even hiding behind each other. Pop. Pop. Pop. They're all gone now." - Shadows, Scott Weston describing his killing spree.
  • "By now, you'll know the details. You'll know how many. You might even know how. You'll know the names, but you won't know why. You'll want to know that this could never happen again...But you still won't know why. You won't Understand. You're not capable...You see, even now you don't know how big this is going to be, how far it reaches...Are you going to try and write off? "He was a loner, a depressive, a sad little psycho." Same old shit, but it keep happening doesn't it. You don't know how to make it stop. Because I am the light and you are the shadows. This will mater. Are you getting this? You see even now, you still don't know how big this is going to be. Shh, its coming!" - Shadows, Scott Weston manifesto (sorry its a bit long, we never got a chance to cut it down).
  • Clarissa: "You killed those people!" Connor: "They take up resources. They contribute nothing...They're a condemned building, aren't they? Rotting from the inside. Look at you - useless, no good to anyone. What is the point of you?" - One Day, Connor Fannery before he tries to kill Clarissa.
