Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Flagg, evil Vanellope, Gredenko, Dr. Mabouse, Pathfinder candidates, Clone Wars queen Rajine

[tdown] child killer, reluctant same to Tor Vizla (I thought on panel was enough to establish the pattern continuing offscreen but in retrospect, meh)

[up][up] Probably are, but not so many that it's NEEDED. Plus, we may be getting at least one more from the upcoming DLC (because heaven forbid they actually put it in the base game just bugs me).

Yes to Princess Vanellope.

ACW: Yes the movie one is Flagg. And for Doom we have more than enough. 8 or 9 I think, but we decided to wait for the next game. To see if there is any there.

Sure to Vanellope and while I'm cleaning the FMA stuff, I may as well call out an old entry of mine I don't look fondly back upon:

  • The unnamed Doctor with the gold tooth created the homunculus Wrath by inserting Philosopher's Stones into the bodies of thirteen candidates, cackling when the process painfully killed the first twelve. Using the now-mindless bodies of the first dozen candidates, the Doctor unleashes them upon the heroes trying to stop Father from destroying Amestris. To force Mustang to open the Gate of Truth, the Doctor slits the throat of his Love Interest so she will bleed to death unless he opens it to save her. Knowing Father's plan would kill millions, the Doctor only strives to cause as much death as he can.

Maybe change it to?

  • The Doctor with the gold tooth was commissioned by Father to create the Homunculus Wrath and did so by indoctrinating dozens of children as potential candidates. Inserting Philosopher's Stones into the subjects' bodies, the Doctor killed all except one in his diabolical experiments, leaving the failures mindlessly only able to follow his orders. When confronted by Roy Mustang and his group, the Doctor tries to force Mustang into opening the Gate of Truth for Father's plan by slitting the throat of his Love Interest and shows only apathy to the notion his helping Father will lead to the deaths of everyone in Amestris.

I noticed on a reread the proto-Bradleys were being referred to by numbers that went well past thirteen, so there are more of them and otherwise I found my writing flowed kinda awkwardly. I think at the time I did it I was basing it on the info in the entry it was before, rather than actually recalling details from the work itself.

[down] Done.

Um...I've never seen Wreck It Ralph, does someone mind explaining in more depth what "stealing codes" actually entails? If it's killing them than sure she can pass, but otherwise it feels like she falls well below baseline and squarely in generic typical villain category.

Yes to Vanellope, my knowledge of Wreak it Ralph tells me that stealing powerups and leaving the games to not be played in some dude's basement isn't that bad (if a console is unplugged then the characters all die but I'm assuming that didn't happen). But the attempted murder, torture, and brutalizing everyone puts her over for me.

idk...maybe I'm being contrarian but "starting a war against and beating up the protagonists and trying to kill one of them" seems like very generic villain stuff to me, especially if stealing codes isn't that big of a deal and the dungeon is a "fungeon". Going to go [tdown] here.

Been awhile. I thought if the game gets unplugged the characters can just leave....Like with qubert.

I forgot to mention the game is attached to a battery when it's being moved, so that's why they're still working after being unplugged.

"rips out part of her glitch coding out of her to be kept in her scepter. A process that’s very painful and has the risk of killing the victim. (Which is dangerous since when a video game character dies outside of their game, they die for real)"

Well, sounds like it's harmful there. Going with a tentative yes to Princess Vanellope von Schweetz, albeit I can be convinced otherwise.

Does stealing powerups actually hurt the characters at all?

The fanfic portrays it does, yes.

A shockong purple bolt of electricity shot out of the machine, piercing Vanellope square in the chest She screamed, louder that she'd ever screamed before, as her digital body flashed and glitched uncontrollably. The shuddering needle-like mechanism above her blared a deafening buzz, sucking a stream of pixels out of her like a giant mosquito drawing blood.

Does that apply to all of the characters she stole the power ups from or just Vanellope's glitch power?

It could. The stealling powerups from the other characters was before the story takes places so we can only speculate from Vanellope's experience that it was this painful. Plus it was confirm she did this 57 times including Vanellope.

Edit: I meant that including Vanellope it was 57 times Princess Vanellope had done this.

Ok I guess I was confused about weather or not it was the same torturous process used for all 58 of them since that wasn't clarified in the EP as far as I saw.
