During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

CM Incarnations Per Character lists 4 portrayals of Lavrentiy Beria from HoI4 mods and Death of Stalin adaptations. Wouldn't his portrayal in Dark Conspiracy (as Koschey the Undying) make it the fifth one?
Bored out of my mind. So might as well do this guy.
Whats the work?
Sherlock Holmes and the house of pain is a 2013 novel by Stephen Seitz.
A missionary woman has disappeared in Spitalfields, one of London's most dangerous districts. When Sherlock Holmes in called on to find her, he discovers enormous, highly intelligent rats have made their home under the streets of London. Holmes is forced to confront the horrors of his past and science gone mad. Word of this phenomenon draws the attention of rising zoologist G.E. Challenger, who decides he must meet the creatures' creator, one Dr. Moreau.
Who is Dr. Alexandre Moreau ?
A Mad Scientist with a God complex and a love for vivisection especially without Anesthia. Moreau and Holmes met years back during research into universal Blood Transfusion, Moreau though desires more. His starts to experiment with into vivisecting live animals with such creepy thrill and ferocity that Holmes teams up with reporter Langdale Pike in order to take photos of his operation. Holmes knows Moreau will move onto Humans if he's not stopped now.
Anyway being disgraced by society, Moreau plots his revenge by having someone murdered by his new pet monstrositie Nelson crafted from his vivsection in order to lure Holmes out. Their he reveals he plans to kill Holmes and do it quietly so has him come quietly, planning to make to look like a suicide. Holmes though tricks him while pretending to go along and intsend sets a fire which scares Nelson unto attacking Moreau while Holmes leaves.
Anyway a few Years pass and Holmes belief that he'd start experimenting with humans is proven true. Holmes is investigating the disappearance of a group of sailors near an island and comes to find Moreau is still alive. Moreau has given his animals Sapience and now tortures and vivisects them in horrifying ways in the so called House of pain. Anyway having captured the sailors , he's forcing them to work well beginning torture them to by cutting them of they don't go faster. Anyway Moreau reveals that he still really hates him and plans to Make Holmes his first human test subject for his vivisection and multilation and has him drugged inducing horrifying Mind Rape as the beginning. Anyway Holmes get his crew to free the sailors and H in from the torture and set to get out as Moreau loses it and starts to fire wildly into Tue crowd killing several sailors before they escape.
Anyway we discover in the modern of the book, that moreau's creations and operation is now in London leading to various deaths. Holmes investigates and arrives to discover the events of the Island of dr moreau have caught up to him and Moreau has burned to death. Kinda Anti Climactic but uh.....
Mitigating factors ?
Uh no. Moreau is a sadist. He gets his jollies off cutting people and animals up and feeling their pain. He can act reasonable and even friendly at times but it's just a cover for a psychotic madman. Holmes gets him very well. Hes a psycho with a God complex.
Anyway as far as redeeming qualities go. I don't think so Moreau is noted to be reclusive and sociopathic. We do find out he's using dead old dads funds to keep his horror show alive but Moreau himself is never indicated to care for his family and seems to just view it as a way to get his job done.
Heinous standard?
Well yeah And I Must Scream vivisection of living sapient beings , Mind Rape torture using chenicals, the House of Pain. Dude packs a lot of atrocities into the book. He gets off on breaking loving things in horrifying ways.
Conclusion
Fairly easy yes.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Oh right for the quotes page.
- Sherlock Holmes: Alexandre Moreau is nothing less than an inhuman fiend,a Frankenstein brought to life. He has no humanity. He ordered one of his atrocious creatures to kill me. Left unchecked, who knows what he might unleash upon the world? Would you really create a world of those rats with Moreau as their ruler? The mind rebels at such a thought.
Challenger: It's no surprise to me that you are as short-sighted as those dullards at the Royal Society.Could you not see? Moreau may be misguided, but certainly he will find the right path eventually. This man may have found the key to evolution! He could answer the most tantalizing question of all: from whence did men come? Perhaps he could even recreate Cro-Magnon men. What we could learn from a living specimen! Look beyond your magnifying glass, Mr. Holmes.
Holmes: Moreau wants but one thing: power. He creates servants, and he rules through fear and pain. He has no interest in benefiting his fellow man. He had foregone his research into universal blood transfusion when I first knew him; that only provided the veil for his true interests. Perhaps you have never looked into the eyes of a monster,Challenger, but I have. And now I see the situation is worse than ever. He must be stopped, once and for all. This time I shall not fail.—Sherlock Holmes and the house of Pain
