Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I'm fairly certain we discussed and said no to Clockwerk before. [tdown] to Clockwerk.

No to Clockwerk. I brought him, and the other possible keepers from the series up last summer. Not one of them make the cut.

@Beast even Neyla? the person who nearly caused the entirety of Paris to go into a hate induced rampage to gain immortality didn't make the cut?

@Godzilla: Neyla was the second one I brought up. She fell flat due to the Hate Plague not being treated with enough of an impact, nor does it really present anything special.

Two fantasy RPG posts tonight. The first is from Greyhawk, from DND. I give you Ivid V

Who is Ivid?

The king of Naelax, fifth of his name, Overking of the Great Kingdom, a massive empire...Ivid has 123 siblings, but murdered them all to take power....save his elder brother. Ivid fought a war against his brother from the shadows, a battle of intrigue and clandestine operation until Ivid won. He then hired a concubine to pour acid into his father's ear, and the Malachite Throne of Naelax was his. A civil war began almost immediately and Ivid showed his brutality: massive amounts of death, savage campaigns, torture, rape, mass-murder to bring the Great Kingdom to its knees. Ivid had massive public tortures and executions, just in case anyone thought about ousting him.

The worst? Was the Screaming Column, a giant spire where...victims are beheaded with a blunt axe and the head is treated by magic priests to stay alive and sentient, in permanent agony, frozen in the stone for all time. Because he was kind of a prick, Ivid laid a tax on anyone worshiping non-evil gods, bringing about massive religious strife and persecution with again, mass murder....unofficially, of course. However....Ivid is kind of incompetent and his military campaigns took a toll, leading to him growing more paranoid, ordering slaughters on places that verged more on genocide, having entire castes of nobility slain and raised as undead to serve him. Surrendering to paranoia, he instituted mass bloodbaths. Like...his population is half the pre-war total. Ivid launched numerous attacks, massacring people and...another little twist of his? The Endless Death.

People tortured horribly in the dungeons, given rings of regeneration and healing by priests...and the process starts all over again. Ivid, however, was struck down by an assassin, and revived...but the process wasn't perfect and he was poisoned, growing more insane as he was atually dying from it. However, at last, the heart of his city is obliterated and Ivid vanishes, presumably obliterated in the conflagration, but gone for now.

Heinousness?

He's almost as bad as Iuz and Vecna. Warlords in Oerth aren't really unusual, but Ivid? Okay, the Screaming Column and Endless Death are almost bad enough themselves. This level of mass murder for an unempowered, normal tyrant? Hell yes, pass.

Mitigating Qualities?

Nope. Not a damn one. Ivid is just a ravenously cruel, paranoid, nasty tyrant.

Conclusion?

Keep.

My other next from Pathinder...the Red Bishop from Sandpoint

Who is the Red Bishop?

A mothman cleric of the demon god Pazuzu, in truth a servant of Pazuzu's son Urvgalor who seeks to bring his master to Golarion by creating a portal to Urvgalor's realm. Problem is, there's an artifact barring him from doing this and the person who set it up is long dead. Even worse, it can only be destroyed by non-evil mortals. So, he needs a plan. And this plan involves a lot of atrocity so he can appear to be a holy man and manipulate the heroes into destroying the ward.

The red Bishop installs demonic cultists in the area, having them run amok, murdering and sacrificing. One local fellow named Jervis Stoot is driven insane by the Red Bishop to become a serial killer called the Chopper, claiming over 25 victims. The local island, Grubber's Hermitage? The Red Bishop intends on having it totally massacred to draw Urvgalor's attention with the book noting this is "but his latest atrocity." To lure nonevil mortals, he has a ton of evil committed so he can arrive and pretend to be a friend....if the PC's don't help him? The Red Bishop attempts to raze the whole region of Sandpoint to ashes and kill every living thing there, saying it's the heroes' fault. Should they assist, though...it'll allow Urvgalor to invade the material plane and turn earth into hell. The heroes need to figure a way out and slay the wicked priest.

Heinousness?

For one cleric of Pazuzu? Mass amounts of murder, sacrifice, attempted turning the world into hell, turning a man into a prolific serial killer, having a small island nation slaughtered and attempting to wipe out Sandpoint? For his place in Pathfinder, pretty easy pass.

'Mitigating Qualities?

Not a thing. He's not even fully loyal to his own god. He is mentioned as having followers of Lamashtu destroyed, but Pazuzu and Lamashtu haaaaate one another to death and he needs to stay on Pazuzu's good side to cheat with Urvgalor (given Lamashtu is Urvgalor's mother...doesn't seem she or Urvgalor care overmuch either.)

Conclusion?

Keeper for such a minor villain
