Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Gaston and Jaspers.

God how I loved Tales From The Crypt! I'm somewhat suprised there don't seem to be any other keepers though.

Yes to Gaston funny how any character with that name immediately draw Beauty and the Beast references even if they have nothing to do with it, kind of like how Jafar was a character before Aladdin came out but now he's basically always seen as a Disney character. Also yes to Jaspers and his quote.

Atlantis, I think it's that others who are heinous enough have some redeeming quality, while those without redeeming qualities (Uncle Ezra, Forever Ambergris dude) aren't bad enough.

Another unapproved Complete Monster pothole I found, this time on one of the characters subpages for the Trails Series. This entry refers to Black Alberich from The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel. I cut the entry and linked to the thread. Anybody interested can do an EP if they want:

  • Complete Monster: Falls into this as one of the few villains in the series with absolutely 0 redeeming qualities whatsoever. Frequently lampshaded by the cast in Cold Steel IV as his depravity outright fills them with disgust.

I mean I did reserve the rights for it but I'm not trusted with talking about Joker (well at least trying to make removal proposals for him) so someone else can take it if they want. Consdering there are multiple different outcomes I doubt I'd be able to EP Joker the right way since you can stop him from killing Jason. So if anyone else wants to get the rights from me feel free.

I found an error on Crossovers: For some reason "I have no wings and I must fly" is called on the page "I Have No Wings and I Must Scream"

For the Batman movie, What form of media is it, A web original on DC Universe or something else? cause if the former, than I can take it.

[down]Where in the writeup should we mention that?

Whoops. For a change like that, feel free to request it.

Also, slight rewrite for Mongul?

  • Mongul was a deeply nasty piece of work, particularly given the time period. In his first appearance, he kidnapped Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Steve Lombard in order to blackmail Superman into giving him the keys to Warworld, then tries to kill both Superman and Supergirl with the weapon. He later traveled to Prince Gavyn (one of the Starmen)'s homeworld, murdered Gavyn's sister, and tried to force Gavyn's girlfriend into marrying him so that he might take over the planet. Beaten by Gavyn and Superman, he seized control of a Sun-Eater and unleashed it on Earth's solar system, seeking to wipe out all human life. It was in his last appearance, however, in the iconic For the Man Who Has Everything storyline that Mongul showed just how low he could sink. Ambushing Superman on his birthday, Mongul used the Black Mercy plant to trap him in a fantasy world, from which Superman could only escape by sacrificing his heart's desire; in Mongul's own words "It must have been like tearing off your own arm." While Superman is occupied with this, Mongul tries to beat Wonder Woman to death, while gloating about how women are too weak to stop him. Eventually trapped by the same weapon he had used on Superman, Mongul dreams of a galaxy awash in bloodshed, with himself seated on a throne, orchestrating it all.

Just removed "The Bronze Age" from the beginning and potholed "fantasy world" to Lotus-Eater Machine.

Also, do we wanna mention that DCAU rape thing for Darkseid?

I mean it's basically in the same universe as Under the Red Hood but you choose the outcome. Like how we decided if Jason Todd died or not and like how we decided what will be canon in the Three Jokers comic miniseries (Lighty said we weren't going to discuss this since it's just another retcon which I agree with because according to it the Joker that paralzyed Barbara isn't the Joker that killed Jason Todd). But I think it's Western Animation. Also yes most surely we should mention the rape for Darksied sorry I didn't respond earlier.

I seem to remember that. It seemed there just weren't enough victims alas. Although I do remember Sebastian from the Undertaking Parlor episode being quite nasty. He and some corrupt chemist ran a scheme where they poisoned vulnerable people with botched medicine and he kills his partner and then attempts to gun down several children before being stopped. Lighty, did you have a look at him? I can't remember if he meets the standard met by Gaston or not. (I would look myself, but I don't want to muscle in on someone else's series.)

Also, I just wanted to give people a heads up: Me and MGD 107 have collaborated together in the past couple of months and have been working our way through the long running crime series Silent Witness. This is a very long running British crime show that's been going since 1996, giving it the distinction of being the fourth longest running crime show that's still ongoing.

Naturally, this being a crime show, we've found quite a goldmine of potential keepers. We've looked at each one and are fairly confident that the ones we're going to propose qualify. We're currently over halfway through our overview at the moment and will hopefully have our first effort posts with you shortly.

As for where we should mention it in Darkseid's writeup: FWIW, it was the last episode(s) of Superman before Justice League, so I'd say somewhere after mentioning Dan Turpin's murder. Let me try:

  • Darkseid, who later appeared in Justice League and was the top threat of the entire DCAU, is the Evil Overlord of the wasteland planet Apokolips, and ultimately desired total dominion over all life in the universe. To achieve this end, he forever seeks the cosmic power of the Anti-Life Equation to use as the ultimate weapon. Incapable of love or empathy, he abused his loyal son Kalibak, handed over his adopted son Scott Free to be tortured and brainwashed by Granny Goodness, and attempted to murder his other son, Orion, for opposing him. His servants are likewise subjected to torture or death should they fail or even question him. Setting his sights on conquering Earth, Darkseid launched a full-scale invasion, only relenting when the planet was declared off-limits by Apokolips's sister planet, New Genesis. To compensate, Darkseid murdered Dan Turpin solely to spite Superman. He would make numerous more attempts to conquer or annihilate the planet, including attempting to destroy it with an comet and brainwashing Superman into leading an attack on his adopted world, turning the Man of Steel into a pariah for years—but not before Darkseid had the brainwashed Superman basically raped. He later attempted to use Brainiac's programming to collect the Anti-Life Equation and bend the universe to his will, leading to his death in a battle with Superman. Upon his resurrection, Darkseid immediately launched another invasion on Earth, not out of a desire for power, but solely to make Superman suffer. Ruthless and tyrannical, Darkseid is Superman's greatest enemy, and one of the few villains he has outright tried to kill.

EDIT: Also, 4TH-longest? What are the other 3?

  • "Edmund Kemper Had a Horrible Temper": After being released from prison for killing his grandparents, Edmund Kemper decides to kill random women to sate his hatred for his mother. Picking up college girls he finds hitchhiking, Kemper takes them to the woods at gunpoint. He then stabs them to death and cuts off their heads. Taking the severed heads home, Kemper keeps them as sex objects, maintaining a large collection from his many victims.

I know it's short, but so's the song.

So Duck granted me permission to propose some Macabre songs of my own. I figured since I proposed some a few months ago, I might as well propose some others while there’s still more songs from them. Don’t worry, I’ll only be proposing three of them, and Duck is almost done with his share of candidates, so we’ll try not to bore you guys with constant Macabre EPs.

These songs I’ll be covering are taken from the album Murder Metal, released in 2003.

Who Is he?

Peter Stumpp, from the song “Werewolf of Bedburg” (Lyrics here), was a Serial Killer from 16th century Germany.

What has he done?

400 years ago, Stumpp terrorized the towns of Bedburg and Cologne with murder, leaving body parts around in various lakes and land. These murders would earn Stumpp the nickname of “The Werewolf of Bedburg,” as he would continue roaming the countryside ripping “innocent victims apart,” and eat their still-warm hearts. By his side was his daughter Sybile, who Stumpp had an incestuous relationship with. Once she gave birth to Stumpp’s son, Stumpp took his newborn child and ate him, remarking how “the brain tasted the best.”

Once Stumpp was finally tracked down, he was “tied to a wooden wheel,” had his flesh peeled off, used a hatchet to break his arms and legs, and then finally burned him after decapitating him. Overkill? Sure, but this was 16th century Germany, and he was a psychopath.

Redeeming Qualities?

None. He doesn't actually love his daughter, only valuing her for sex and newborns to feast upon.

Heinousness?

Cannibal, murderer, child eater, and had a sexual relationship with his daughter, who may I remind you was also his wife. Easily passes.

Conclusion

Easy keep.
