Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Okay, I've been kicking up my feet on some effortposts for too long now. Firstly, I wanna open with one Lighty generously recommended:

What's the setting?

Usagi Yojimbo is a famous, long-running comic about a Funny Animal version of feudal Japan. Our protagonist is Miyamoto Usagi himself, a rabbit samurai whose liege was slain in combat, leading him to wander the land as a roaming samurai. Usagi's ruthless—he's a samurai, after all—but he's generally a pretty nice guy, and through his adventures he meets a variety of colorful characters, some noble, some very much not.

We have three keepers up already, but the comic has been running for so goddamned long there's been a veritable trove of one-shots. I'm gonna talk about possibly the worst of these one-shots today: Katsuhige, the Arc Villain of issues #66-68.

Who is Katsuhige? What has he done?

A vain, bitter artist whose skill was not up to par with his motivation, Katsuhige's jealousy of his contemporary artists led up to make a deal with dark forces to become a masterful artist. His wish was granted, but his soul was bound into an inconspicuous art set. Anyone who uses this art set will end up possessed by Katsuhige, who uses their bodies as his hosts until they burn up.

Katsuhige's art set literally has the power to bring art to life, which Katsuhige is using through his current host to create monsters and have them wreak seemingly-indiscriminate havoc on the land. This belies a more sinister purpose; children have been disappearing in droves from the region, and all of them end up in Katsuhige's grasp. See, Katsuhige's art set needs the blood of children to act as ink in order to produce its cursed artwork, so throughout the ages, Katsuhige has acted as a prolific serial killer of children, bringing kids in batches to his lair whenever his ink is running low to butcher the kids and refill his ink. Over half-a-dozen children have been corralled by Katsuhige's simplistic dragon, who promises a very slow death for every kid involved.

Thankfully, Usagi and his ally Sasuke, a relentless hunter of evil (whose appearance generally portends some of the wickedest Monster of the Week villains in the comic) manage to stop Katsuhige and free all the children from their horrible fate. Katsuhige's host ends up killed by a wandering bandit...but when the bandit pilfers the body and finds only the cursed art set, Katsuhige takes over the poor schmuck, ready to start all over again...

Any mitigating factors?

Absolutely laughable. Villains in Usagi can get nasty. The Funny Animal world doesn't change the fact Usagi is about as brutal as the average Mirage TMNT comic; torture and mass murder isn't exactly uncommon. What easily distinguishes Katsuhige is the dense amount of child murder. Not many villains deliberately seek out children, and certainly none murder dozens for years on ends in order to facilitate their cursed artwork. We never get an exact victim count for Katsuhige, but it's clear it's through the roof—he's been active for years and children have been disappearing for a long, long time.

Conclusion?

Keep him.

Wait, but I've had my copy for about a week now. How'd it only release today? Unless Barnes and Nobles sent me my copy early...

I found another unapproved Complete Monster wick, this time on the Characters subpage for The Mask referring to Big Head. I cut the wick and linked to the thread. I'd say anybody familiar with the Mask can do an EP, but I have a feeling Big Head doesn't count.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The Mask is usually a naughty trickster who likes to mess with people and while not evil he's certainly kinda of a jerk. Despite this he's ready to do good for people and saving others when they're in danger. Now Big Head on the other hand is a Complete Monster through and through.
