During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yes to Black Shuck.
So are we all in agreement about what to do with Skynet?
Edited by Bullman on Jul 2nd 2020 at 9:03:11 AM
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI support splitting up the Skynet entry, so long as we cover the films where Skynet actually has a personality (I've only seen the first four films)
Another unapproved Complete Monster pothole I found, this time on Villain Protagonist referring to Zhuge Liang from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms fanfic, Farce of the Three Kingdoms. I cut the pothole and linked to the thread. Anybody interested in doing an EP can feel free to do so.
- Whichever way you look at it in Farce of the Three Kingdoms. Liu Bei, the Designated Hero, is cowardly, hypocritical, and self-centred, and Zhuge Liang is arguably a Complete Monster. Cao Cao is generally more likable, and frequently Pets The Dog, but he's definitely a paranoid, murderous tyrant. Sun Quan is A Lighter Shade of Grey, but he gets much less focus.
Black Shuck
Probably named after the English cryptid of the same name.

yeah, if the fic has been abandoned that's fine.
Edit: just finished The Long Earth by Pratchett and Stephen Baxter. There might be one or two candidates I have, but if anyone else wants to collaborate on it or discuss it then just drop me a PM

Okay, i already discussed this comic in MB thread, now i'm gonna talk about it here
What is the Work?
Judge Dredd is a long running franchise, based on the property of 2000 AD comic company. Starting from 1977, aside from the primary comic series and various comic spin-offs, Judge Dredd franchise expanded over video games, movies, radio plays, novels and non-canon comics from other companies (like DC and IDW). The franchise itself follows the titular Judge Dredd, one of the many Judges within the Judge system, who acts as both the poluce and the Judge, going around Mega City One and punishing criminals. Now, the subject of my EP is non-canon comic series from DC Comics, which was ongoing from 1994 to 1996 and ran for 18 issues. The comic reimagined the origin of the Post-Apocalyptic future of Judge Dredd and the first 10 issues of the comic take place many years before the Nuclear Apocalypse happened.
I have two candidates from this series and the first one is the guy, responsible for the state of the world in the future, that Dredd found himself in - Vice President (and later President) Robert Booth.
Who is Robert Booth?
Robert Booth is a Vice Presdent, who hated the President Frankowski and wanted to become President himself. Joining in on Chief Judge Fargo's scheme (in exchange for Fargo's promise to make him a President) of creating the "perfect justice system" by unleashing chaos and anrchy on the streets of the city to make the population more welcoming to the Judge system, Booth was dissapointed
to learn that Fargo's organization called "Ministry of Fear" failed to kill the president and was introduced talking about this failure with Fargo. After talking
with Fargo, Booth decided to take the initiative in his hands and simply walked
into President's house and gleefully announced that he will be taking over, before killing
the President and buying
off the loyalty of his butler, promising his a raise,if he will work for him now and noticing that he will be out of the job, if he will reveal anything (also he ask him to tell him Frankowski's password, so he could take control of the Nuclear Warheads of the country).
After Dredd, after being put in suspended animation by Fargo and waking up fifty years later, found
that all life on Earth was destroyed or mutated, aside from few Mega Cities (which were protected by the shields), he learns through Fargo about how this world came to be, we see the flashbacks of how Booth launched a Nuclear Apocalypse
(with a dead guard nearby) through a button that launched all Nuclear Warheads of the country, reducing the world to a wasteland, aside from few Mega Cities, that were protected by the shields, causing hundreds of millions of deaths and just as much people outside Mega Cities were horribly mutated. When people start rebelling against him and demanding his resignation, Booth launched an assault on them
, killing masses, before people turned to Chief Judge Fargo and his Judges for salvation, resulting in Judges starting a war with Booth and his forces. A thousand Judges died
, before Fargo could defeat and arrest Booth, giving him his final sentence.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
None. Booth is a power hungry madman, who only craves and desires more power, only sparing Frankowski's butler in exchange for his services and out of pragmaticity (since he wants Frankowski's password and didn't want to attract more attention, instead wanting butler to make up a story of how Frankowski died out of heart attack).
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Easily passes, most heinous character in the comic, despite appearing in grand total of 3 issues (and in each of them he only onscreen for like 2-3 pages). He is the reason the world turned into a Nuclear Wasteland, he murdered millions and caused millions more to suffer a horrible mutations and after that he was responsible for deaths of thousands in his attempts to remain in power.
Final Verdict?
What do you think?
Edited by VeryVileVillian on Jul 3rd 2020 at 11:54:04 AM
I'm starting to think a Dredd subpage wouldn't be the worst thing. We can use the image of Death and replace it with this one
◊ of Slough Feg. We'd need a new quote for the 2000 AD page and a quote for Dredd.
