Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Zandramas doesn't need the clarification that she's the Big Bad "of The Malloreon", it's implied since she's under it's heading.

So remember The Folk of the Air and Balekin. Seems it's not the end as he's to appear in a companion novel / prequel called How the King of Elfhame Learned To Hate Stories centered on his little brother Cardan. So I'll keep an eye on him.

Alrighty, with the go ahead, let's get things back on track with a good ol' fashion Ravok proposal, one that wouldn't be too far from home in one of my trademark crime novels...

What's the work?

Becky is a recently-released action-horror-thriller film starting Lulu Wilson of The Haunting of Hill House fame.

When young, troublesome, titular teen Becky is brought out to her family's lake house by her dad Jeff, who reveals he's marrying his current girlfriend Kayla, Becky runs off in a rage, still feeling the pain of her mother's death barely a year ago.

While Becky is off in her fort in the woods, she is quick to realise things have taken a turn for the even more sour, as a gang of four escaped convicts have broken into the lake house and taken Jeff, Kayla and her son Ty hostage. As the thugs scour the area for a mysterious key in Becky's possession, the young girl decides to put her boiling turmoil and anger to good use, as she begins picking off the thugs one by one...

Filled with gore and blood splatter galore, the film is a pretty fun romp, all things considered. Made all the more fun by our candidate.

Who is he?

Dominick—played by Kevin freaking James—is the ruthless, soft-spoken leader of the escaped convicts. A hulking Neo-Nazi decked out in more Swastikas and Schutzstaffel tattoos than you can shake a stick at, Dominick spends the film hunting Becky in search of the aforementioned key, for reasons known only to himself. And though in prison at the start of the flick, that.... doesn't last very long.

What has he done?

Dominick kicks the film off by sneaking a shiv to one of his partners and getting a black inmate stabbed to death. Put on a prison transport with 4 fellow inmates, Dominick gives his loyal right-hand man and resident giant Apex the signal for him to strangle one of the other inmates to death. Using this to get the vehicle stopped, Dominick murders the guards and escapes with Apex and his two other cohorts, Cole and Harrison, in tow.

Using the prison guards' outfits to flag down a passing car, Dominick asks the driver to step out of the vehicle, noticing the man's two children in the back of the car. After learning that the man lives a half-mile away, Dominick casually remarks "Gunshots would carry for a half-mile, don't wanna alarm your wife," and proceeds to beat the man to death before giving a hesitant Apex the order to kill both of the children with his bare hands.

Using the vehicle for transport, Dominick travels to a lake house to find an important key. Manipulating his way inside the house past Jeff and Kayla, Dominick not-so-subtly insults Jeff for "mixing breeds" with Kayla, and has his men attack. Taking Jeff, Kayla, and her young son Ty hostage, Dominick realizes quickly that the key is missing, and questions the family about its whereabouts. When they insist they know nothing, Dominick shoots Kayla through the leg, threatening to then do the same to Ty but noting that "his leg's so small, y'know, might blow the whole thing off."

Deducing that the final member of the family, young teen Becky, is missing from the scene, Dominick is contacted by her via walkie talkie. After shutting down her lies that she has called the cops and realizing that she has the key, Dominick grabs a poker fresh out of a firepit and presses it to Jeff's face, broadcasting his screams to Becky while ordering her to bring him the key. When Becky hesitates, Dominick stabs the hot poker into Jeff's gut, finally drawing Becky in.

Though Jeff manages to break free of his bindings and beg Becky to flee as she approaches, Dominick shoots the man dead in front of his daughter's eyes and tries to attack Becky. Becky manages to stab Dominick in the eye with the key and run back into the wounds, leading to Dominick having to cut his eye out (leading to a humorous scene of Harrison trying in vain to use safety scissors to do the cutting).

Sending Cole and Harrison out to kill Becky and bring him the key, Dominick confronts Apex over the man's growing horror and regret at their crimes, testing his loyalty and cementing his control over the man, before ordering him to get out there and find Becky when she brutally kills Cole and Harrison.

While Apex shows mercy on Becky and leaves the lake house in regret for his crimes, Dominick is called out by Kayla on what the point of this home invasion was all about, and when Dominick responds with a bullshit Motive Rant about how the world has muddled "her kind's" divine purpose and more racist garbage, she insults Dominick's intelligence...Dominick reacts by smacking the woman and trying to strangle her son, and though he's distracted by Becky calling him outside, Dominick remarks with cold glee that when he's done with Becky, he's going to kill Kayla while Ty watches.

Confronted by Becky and one of her dogs (the other dog having been killed by Cole earlier), Dominick viciously mocks her over the fact that she's now an orphan, throwing her father's death at his hands in her face and cruelly noting she's going to bounce around foster homes, never loved by anyone due to the fact that she killed Cole and Harrison. Dominick then tries to lure Becky to his side, promising to "mold her" to her full murderous potential....to which she responds by telling him to "shut your face."

Attacking Becky and finding the key on her, Dominick cheerfully tries to shoot her in the face, only for Apex to tackle Dominick, having come back to stop the man from killing Becky, Kayla and Ty. Refusing to let the witnesses go despite Apex's pleads, Dominick fakes compliance in letting them go....only to grab a gun and shoot Apex in the chest and open fire on Becky.

Dominick meets his end when Apex holds him off long enough for Becky to drive an ATV over Dominick....and park the attached push mower directly on top of the man's head, leading to his face, skull, and pretty much everything above the neck being shredded to pieces.

Apex then reveals how sorry he is for everything he did and how he hopes that maybe he can start seeking redemption....only for Becky to shoot him in the head as revenge for Apex's hand in her suffering and Jeff's death.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no.

Dominick likes to refer to his gang as a "brotherhood", and even calls Apex his "son" several times. Hell, when Dominick sees how Apex is becoming hesitant and distasteful towards their crimes, he hands Apex a gun and tells him that if he's not going to help Dominick's plan, he may as well just shoot and kill Dominick where he stands.

This all is....pretty well subverted the more we see of Dominick. He callously insults Harrison and threatens to kill him if he outlives his usefulness, he never shows anything in the way of genuine affection towards Apex, and, in the end, when Apex stands in his way from killing Becky? Dominick acts friendly and agreeable....only to grab a gun and shoot Apex without hesitation. Dominick values his "sons" for as much as they are loyal to him, even explicitly recalling how his best memory of Apex was when he realized how loyal and devoted he was to Dominick.

Now, what Dominick's master plan is....we never actually find out. He wants the key to use it for an undisclosed reason....all we get is Dominick remarking to Kayla:

"I wouldn't expect you to understand this, but I'm doing it for your kind as much as mine...you see, the races all were created with a divine purpose, but our modern world has blurred and distorted that purpose. But that's all about to change."

Dominick's obviously hoping to put the races 'back where they belong' as it were, and though that's iffy in terms of how he hoped to accomplish it, there's really nothing at all potentially well-intentioned or some shit. Dominick's just a racist shithead who obviously wants whites reigning over others.

Heinousness?

For a home invasion movie, hell for an action-horror in general...Dominick is pretty damn bad. Kills two inmates and two guards to break out of prison, beats a man to death and has his two very young children killed, shoots Kayla in the leg, tortures and kills Jeff while making Becky watch and listen, threatens Ty several times while planning to kill the boy and his mother both, and tries to kill them all even after he's gotten what he wants, rounding it off by shooting Apex when he stands in the way.

It's pretty shockingly nasty, especially Dominick's propensity for threatening children.

Final Verdict?

Paul Blart breaking bad? How can he get anything but a 'Yes'??

[tup] to Dominick

Okay I guess I can understand keeping Riff Tamson, I just wasn’t sure if he heinous enough (I guess Riff is like a Grings Kodai situation). With that there is a candidate from Star Wars: The Clone Wars that I would like propose. I’m not entirely sure on him, but he was mentioned a few times and I think that he is at least worth a proper EP. With that here’s Admiral Trench

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Admiral Trench is a ruthless military commander who introduces himself in the Season 2’s “Cat and Mouse” by laying wastes to the planet Christophsis during his occupation of the planet causing destruction and countless deaths in the process. However he was stopped by Anakin Skywalker and his clone troopers using a stealth ship to destroy Trench’s fleet.

Thought to be killed in the fleet’s destruction, it would soon be revealed in Season 6’s "The Unknown” that Trench has survived Skywalker’s attack albeit now a cyborg and is ordered by Count Dooku to Tup for him to kill since his inhibitor chip malfunctioned, to which Trench did while also killing everyone else in the transportation carrier that was holding Tup captive.

He would make his final appearances in Season 7 serving as the Arc Villain for the Bad Batch Arc, alongside Wat Tambor, where he has collaborated with Wat in exploiting Clone Trooper Echo’s agonizing And I Must Scream fate for Trench’s strategic uses to win him countless battles against the Galactic Republic.

Trench later tries to use a bomb to blow up the planet Anaxes, which would kill around a million to billion of lives while sending his army of droids to kill the Jedi and Clone Troopers that were trying to disarm Trench’s bomb. However Trench’s bomb is successfully disarm foiling his plan to blow up Anaxes, while Anakin personally kills Trench before blowing his armada again

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

All that known about Trench was that he was thought to be dead during an attack, only to reveal to have survive, that its and Trench is never portrayed sympathetically and has no redeeming qualities only concerning himself with winning victories against the republic to fuel his own ego and committing any kinds of atrocity to ensure his victories.

Heinousness

I thought to EP Trench was because of his willingness to cause destruction wether it be oppressing the planet Christophis, exploiting Echo’s And I Must Scream fate for his own purposes, and trying to blow up Anaxes, which would kill millions, if not billions, of lives, which would really add to his high body count.

Now I understand that the heinous standard for the Star Wars canon is pretty high which is why I’m not completely sure on wether or not Trench meets it. That said seeing his crimes made me think that it would at least warrant a neutral EP to see what everyone thinks about Trench (especially since everyone has decided to keep Riff Tamson)

Final Verdict?

I will leave that decision for you guys.

[tdown] Admiral Trench. Trying to destroy Anaxes is the only thing that comes close, but the show is never clear if Anaxes even has a civilian population. It's a pretty barren place and the Republic bases are the only signs of intelligent life. Killing that much Republic personnel would still be bad obviously but not the same as destroying a planet with innocent civilians.
