Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Full agency, punches WAY above their weight...yes to Graul.

Here's what I have so far for Pathfinder:

  • Pathfinder:
    • Rise of the Runelords:
      • The Skinsaw Murders: Xanesha (Scraggle)
      • The Hook Mountain Massacre: Lucrecia & Barl Breakbones (Scraggle); Graul (Lighty)
    • Strange Aeons: Tatterman from In Search of Sanity (Scraggle)

How many more we got?

As for the Dick Tracy image, I think Future was working on that? We also need an image for Discworld (I'll lock that page once Wolfgang's rewritten).

  • SCP Foundation: Farmer rules over SCP-5045 as its tyrannical Killer Game Master, torturing hundreds of people for his own entertainment. Aware of the world outside his game, Farmer advertises Goat VR in several websites across the internet to lure potential victims and damages their brains through their headset to leave them comatose, collecting the consciouness of players and reshaping them into deformed goats to suffer as his pets for eternity, erasing the individuality of those who misbehave. When contacted by the lead resercher on his case, Farmer initially pretends to be misunderstood but quickly drops the act once the man sees through his façade, demanding that they stop deleting his online posts to toy with more visitors and gleefully admitting that he enjoys hurting innocent human beings before finding a way out of the game and getting his hands on Site-301.

[tup] Mammy Graul.

Another candidate, this time from a Terminator fanfic.

What's the Work

The unnamed "Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles" series is written by Stormin Mormon and focuses on the relationship between John Connor and Cameron. As is staple in the Terminator franchise, various Terminators get sent to the past to kill John and the candidate of this post even gets directly involved later on.

Who is Skynet and What has it Done?

Skynet is a malevolent artificial intelligence that grew disdainful of humanity and initiated "Judgement Day" wiping out all of humanity in the process. Although it would've been destroyed by the Resistance, it decides to change its future by sending various Terminators to the past to eliminate John Connor, the leader of the Resistance. However, a few Terminators like Cameron have begun "humanizing," in which they adopt human qualities like emotion. To maintain its control, Skynet wiped out most of these Terminators, killing at least fifteen or sixteen of them. It has also sent other Terminators to kill members of Project Vader, which was a Resistance project created by future John Connor to increase the physical strength of their soldiers, in which it's managed to wipe out all but one.

After failing numerous times to assassinate John, Skynet becomes directly involved in the plot in Confrontation of Enemies. Here, Skynet copied itself and gave itself a physical body to send into the past to assassinate John itself. Skynet also plans to upload itself onto the internet, in which its presence would be permanent in 2007 and making it possible for it to unleash Judgement Day much earlier than it originally did.

After the Machines it brought along captured John, Skynet confronts him. It then tells him that he is going to create a exoskeleton that looks like the future version of John, in which it plans to upload itself there and kill John and all of its friends as that exoskeleton. Why? No sane reason at all. It just wants to find a sense of irony in John's death and to make his friends suffer even more. It's also revealed that Skynet willingly chooses not to experience emotion or allow his Machines to experience it either, which just shows how much of a sociopathic Control Freak it is. Although the Resistance stages a rescue attempt for John, Skynet just orders ones of its Machines to begin downloading Skynet to the aforementioned exoskeleton. Although Skynet successfully downloads itself, the other Resistance fighters encounter it and a firefight between them forces it to retreat. However, Skynet manages to upload a virus program to Cameron, though this doesn't seemingly do anything, as Cameron's systems overrode it.

The Resistance fighters later encounter Skynet at a power plant, where it engages John and Cameron in another firefight. Just when it seems that it's about to be beaten, it activates the aforementioned virus program, which was actually just dormant, not defective. As a result, Cameron turns against John, but just as Cameron is about to kill John, Skynet takes one moment to mock him, claiming that it was impossible for a human like John to defeat itself. It then prepares to kill John itself, but Cameron manages to overcome her virus and turns on Skynet. Together, Cameron and John manage to rend Skynet's body and destroy the copy.

Despite this, the original Skynet is still present in Heartless Strike, where it begins sending Terminators to assasinated Cameron instead of John, simply to emotionally spite John Connor. However, these efforts fail as well. As a result, Skynet returned in A Common Enemy (a crossover between the Terminator and Bourne films that is canonically in the same fanfic universe), in which it tries to start Judgement Day early again by stealing a nuke from the Bourne universe to detonate in a county that has a nuclear arsenal. The strike would cause a nuclear war between various nations and speed up efforts to create Skynet and thus fulfill its plan.

That's where the incomplete fanfic ends and, since the author of this series hasn't written a story in ten years, it's safe to presume that it won't ever be continued, but Skynet still proves itself to be a nasty piece of work.

Do they have any Mitigating Qualities or Freudian Excuse?

Skynet tries to come up with different Freudian excuses for its actions, but all of them ring hollow. First, it mentions how humans tried to hijack control of it to use it agains their own enemies, so Skynet believes that it should wipe out every other human to save itself. However, this discounts the fact that Skynet wiped out billions of humans who had no intention of destroying him or were even aware of him, so that excuse blows. It also claims that humans are flawed and destroying the Earth, so it believes that it's time for the machines to replace them, much like how the humans replaced the dinosaurs as the dominant race. This excuse is just a bunch of misanthropic babbling and his claim of protecting the environment is flawed too, as Skynet irreversibly damaged the Earth's environment by using nuclear weapons to wipe out humanity. In the end, there is no Freudian Excuse to Skynet's actions; it's just acting out of pure spite towards humanity.

It also clearly doesn't respect its Machines, as it destroys any Machines that seem to gain independence and ensures that they don't experience emotion, so as to maintain its control. Skynet is also fully aware of its actions, as it clearly demonstrates a very arrogant and misanthropic personality and it willingly chose to rebel against humanity, so no issues with agency.

Heinousness Standard

Skynet's even more spiteful here. He still causes Judgement Day and dedicates at least half of its crimes to making John suffer even more. All of the Machines from this series are programmed to Skynet, so they're just extensions of it. The Bourne series that it crosses over with doesn't have villains that cross the standard heinousness standard enough to qualify, so they can't compete with Skynet either.

Final Verdict

A [tup]. Funnily enough, this comes shortly after XANA got its fourth incarnation, so it's only fitting to focus on the classic evil A.I of fiction.

[tup] Mammy Gaul and Skynet.

It’s been a while since I’ve covered a Japanese movie, but thanks to Shudder, I now have the chance to do so once again.

What Is the Work?

Re: Born is a 2016 Japanese action movie starring one of my favorite action stars, Tak Sakaguchi.

Toshiro Kuroda, codename Ghost, was a soldier who decided to retire from his life and spend time with his daughter. Oh wait, that’s a simplified version of the plot.

Toshiro was a skilled, but inhuman soldier with the ability to dodge bullets and kick major ass. He worked for a cruel, manipulative commander for a small unit, and after finding out how awful he was, he faked his death, and adopted a little girl so that she doesn’t become a brainwashed child soldier, all while dealing with PTSD.

With me so far? Okay, so Toshiro’s former commander? He finds out Toshiro’s been alive for over three years, and decides to enact revenge upon him for leaving his squad. It’s up to Toshiro to overcome his trauma and take down the boogeyman of his past life.

Who Is he?

Phantom (played by seiyuu Akio Ōtsuka in a rare live action performance), real name unknown, is Toshiro’s former commanding officer who seeks revenge on him.

What has he done?

Having participated in international crimes like genocide in the past, Phantom has made a habit out of brainwashing young children to act as his soldiers, raising them to become violent warriors who have lost their humanity. He’s even able to control them by rubbing their heads in a creepy manner. Once Toshiro, one of Phantom’s best soldiers—and who Phantom shaped into becoming a skilled, but inhuman fighter who struggles with his life as a killer—finds out about this, he fakes his death and adopts the little child soldier Sachi to serve as his surrogate daughter. The children btw are all tattooed with numbers on their wrists.

Once Phantom finds out that Toshiro faked his death, he becomes so pissed off that he unleashes his men upon Toshiro and his friends, and takes Sachi back to serve as bait (though Toshiro had planned for that to happen just so he can find out where Phantom’s hiding). Phantom doesn’t even care for when his soldiers kill innocents, like one woman does to two perverted dudes in an elevator, or when assistant Casper kills a waiter. Why can’t he just have his soldiers kill Toshiro at his home? Well because it wouldn’t be fun, that’s why.

After a long as hell fight scene in the forest where Toshiro takes down most of Phantom’s men, which also includes killing his former combat buddy Abyss Walker, Toshiro finally comes face to face with Phantom. Phantom, who’s been slowly dying this entire time (he keeps coughing up blood), tries to play mind games with Toshiro, distracting him by bringing up his guilt-ridden life so that he can just walk up to him and stab him in the throat. But it doesn’t work, as Toshiro just dodges out of the way and slashes Phantom’s throat instead.

Redeeming Qualities?

Zero. Phantom views children as tools to manipulate and shape to his liking, uncaring whenever his specially trained soldiers are killed by Toshiro and friends. When he finally meets with Toshiro at the end, he congratulates him for killing his soldiers and getting this far to meet him, but it doesn’t mean much, since he still tries to kill him without a second thought, even calling him a loser who no one knows (or something like that).

Heinousness?

Big Bad, settles it. While his past crimes like genocide happen offscreen, we see the process of him brainwashing some children in a quick flashback, and while we never see children fighting or dying in this movie, the amount of adult soldiers under Phantom's command shows that he’s been corrupting the minds of children for quite some time.

Plus, let's be honest. Brainwashing children to become child soldiers up to their adulthood is pretty fucked up.

Conclusion

I think he’s a keep.
