Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

  • The Saga of Beta Ray Bill: Asteroth is an Omnicidal Maniac of a demon accidentally broken free in a violent clash between Bill and one of Galactus' heralds. Asteroth immediately proves herself worse than even Galactus himeslf, ravaging dozens of planets and their populations to drain the life from them and attempting to annihilate every possible facet of reality, up to the megaverses, to reduce existence to an "orgy of chaos." Even struck down, Asteroth reclaims her form in an especially cruel way; devouring the souls of Bill's fallen people, the Korbinites, and gloating that to strike her down now would be to erase Bill's people forever.

  • Potema Septim, the Wolf Queen of Solitude, has the dubious honor of being one of the few “unambiguously evil” figures in the history of Tamriel. Potema was responsible for the War of the Red Diamond, having her bastard niece on the throne executed to install her son Uriel Septim III as Emperor in her place, plunging the country into a war so brutal it nearly tore the Empire to pieces. Dabbling in necromancy and daedra-dealing toward the end of her life to the point has become a “land of death” from his bloated it is with resurrected corpses of her enemies and her own servants alike, Potema’s evil was powerful enough to live on into the Fourth Age as a hateful spectre. Unspeakably petty as well, Potema once condemned a servant to the eternal torment of the Soul Cairn for an unintentional insult. Suspected to have even been responsible for the fall of her grand-nephew Pelagius the Mad into irrecoverable insanity, Potema is one of the few characters in Tamriel’s inconsistent lore to be exactly as evil as she's claimed to be.

  • Mecinar was once one of the Clockwork Apostles of the “tinkerer god” Sotha Sil, and his ambitious intellect brought him to intellectual depths that horrified even Sotha. Mecinar turned many unwilling innocents into abominations, fused by steel and flesh, causing Sotha to exile Mecinar. Biding his time until after Sotha had died, Mecinar manipulates a wandering party into letting him regain access to the Clockwork City, before seizing the New Heart of Lorkhan that powered the city to make himself into a god. Mecinar attempts to reduce the entire population of the Clockwork City into mindless grotesqueries to serve him forevermore, and resurrects one of the hero’s fallen companions to force them to fight their former friend out of nothing but spite and dark scientific curiosity.

  • Spartacus: Marcus Licinius Crassus, first consul to the Roman Republic, is vile and ambitious even by the standards of the Roman elite. Crassus first demonstrates his cruelty by personally finishing off a gladiator slave named Draba who attempts to defy his captors, regularly preceding over all the usual atrocities of the gladiator games with bored scorn at best. When Draba's own friend Spartacus is inspired to foment a slave uprising in response to the cruelty of the Romans, Crassus walls him and the thousands of slaves he's liberated into an attack they can't avoid, before ordering the slaves slaughtered. Chafed at the continued defiance of the remaining slaves, Crassus opts to have them all crucified alongside the Appian Way, and invokes Exact Words on a horrified ally to whom he had promised the sale of "survivors" to. Crassus forces Spartacus to duel his last remaining friend to the death out of spite and kidnaps his beloved Valinia and his newborn son as slaves. Continually unable to grasp how beloved Spartacus is, even after he threatens the life of Valinia's son to try and force her love toward him, the only answer Crassus ever gets to his question is that he'd simply never be able to understand.

So this is something I put off for some time because I don't usually watch these kind of channels. This one is going to be a double effortpost.

ZMDE Animations is a Youtube Series of animated short stories. Unlike most of their kind, there is examples of continuity between episodes and there's even a few story arcs. Set mainly in Toronto, Canada, they all focus on the misadventures of the fictionalized narrator Steven, as well as his friends and family; more often than not take the turn for the dramatic or horrific. From these episodes, there's two villains I think might stand out.

First I'm going to talk about a predatory neighbor named Jay.

Who is he ? What does he do ?

Jay is the villain of the episode It Wasn't Worth It. In this episode, Steven's sister Tabitha, who gets Jay as a new neighbor; Jay as it turns out is the rich son of a powerful yuppie. Jay takes an unsettling attraction to Tabitha, but she avoids his advances. Tabitha meanwhile is looking to get a job at a banking firm, and as it turns out, Jay's dad owns the company and Jay uses nepotism to get Tabitha a job. Deciding to put up working for a douche and having said douche as a neighbor, Tabitha is kept up at night for several days by the sound of women crying/screaming and Jay attacking them. Tabitha tries her best to ignore this, before deciding to spend time at Steven's house. Steven becomes suspicious when Tabitha is acting too nice to him during her stay, and he overheard the violence occurring at Jay's house. Tailing Jay as he drives to a hospital, Steven witnesses Jay get into an argument with a civilian whose car he bumped into, throwing his money at the guy and calling him a peasant.

When Jay leaves the hospital, Steven investigates further and see's Jay's seeming girlfriend, who he has brutalized and intimidated into silence. Steven then learns the truth; that Jay uses his money and position in the company to rent out a house in the lower class neighborhoods, where he would take girls who apply to his company to beat and/or rape them. As this is happening, Jay corners Tabitha in her house as she's getting out of the shower to conduct a "job interview", where upon he tries to sexually assault her. Luckily, Steven arrives at the nick of time and confronts Steven about his dirty hobby; Jay brags that people like him are above the law, before Steven reveals he caught a video of Jay coasting a civilian, threatening to leak it online. Despite successfully blackmailing Jay, Steven decides he might just expose him anyway, and sends the video to his victim, with the suggestion that she will leak it.

Redeeming Qualities or Freudian Excuse ?

None given. He's this arrogant, predatory yuppie who thinks his money and position in the company means he can walk all over people. He mentions his dad, but there's nothing that indicates he cares for him aside from using him for nepotism. Other than that he's a brutal predator behind closed doors.

Now for the second one, Noah, who also gets involved with Tabitha.

Who is he ? What does he do ?

The villain of the episode My Sister Helped Kill 6 People, Noah is Tabitha's new boyfriend; a handsome, charming and seemingly empathetic individual, Noah was once a powerful businessman who sold his company and decided to use his wealth to become a philanthropist. On one date, Steven joins Tabitha and Noah to get to know him. Noah brings up that he is putting his money into working to help the homeless. Tabitha brings up Noah's "extravaganza" a monthly event Noah hosts where he and his workers feed homeless people warm meals across the city, and Steven gets invited to join. After an unsettling encounter with homeless junkies on their first outing, Steven hears on the news how six homeless are dead and many others are hospitalized from an unknown substance.

Hearing the news, Steven calls Tabitha about his suspicions on Noah (he recognized one of the victims as the junkies they encountered). When they sneak into his house to investigate, they are soon caught by Noah, who is seemingly understanding when they explain the situation. Noah walks Steven to his basement, and quickly reveals his true colors and a drug lab he operates. Noah has Steven locked in a cage and explains he has developed a very addictive and fatal substance, and he uses his "extravaganza" to distribute his drugs, talking about how they're desperation makes them the perfect customers. Noah confidently thinks he's going to get away with it and prepares to leave Steven to die, while he plans to kill Tabitha. Unfortunately for him, Tabitha discreetly calls the police after catching him in one of his lies (which website he sold his company too) and Noah is arrested.

Redeeming Qualites or Freudian Excuse ?

Notta. He's got this faux understanding and empathetic front about him, seemingly cares for Tabitha (who is genuinely earnest in helping the homeless), deceives her and plans to kill her to eliminate a witness. His puts up a public front about wanting to help the homeless through a month charity even, but it's really to push an addictive product of his and he has no remorse over the deaths he's caused by it.

That said, for how otherwise seriously he's played, his arrest at the end comes off as a little comedic seeing how quickly his plans have gone up in smoke and the episode ends abruptly as he's about to be arrested.

Heinous Standard

The reason I decided to EP them together is because the heinouness that occurs in ZMDE Animations is reaching, and I wanted to avoid writing this section twice. In Fictional!Steven's misdadventures, he and his people encounter quite a lot of bad people.

Among the other villains in this series, there's a crime organization that goes after Steven's family; a attempted terror bombing occurs on a plane they're on; Steven has an encounter with an alleged serial killer; he and his friends have a Wendigo encounter during a ski trip; an animal abusing "sanctuary"; Steven's girlfriend has two stalker encounters; Steven nearly gets involved with a mob boss (also Offscreen Villainy); Steven at one point saves his infant niece from a child trafficker; Steven is caught by an attempted murderer who plans to cannibalize him. And finally, there's an ongoing story arc involving a conspiracy of mass murder Steven became a target in.

Out of them, Noah and Jay are some of the few villains who have an explicitly explored and reaching crimes; Jay being all but stated to be Serial Rapist (albeit a censored for monetization one), who's given an established pattern; while Noah is a drug boss pushing an addictive product that kills at least six of his customers. Out to the villains on the show thus far, these two are the ones I think are the more likely for this trope.

I was actually wondering about Beta Ray Bill; I don't think Thor's actually in that comic, so I can go either way.

For the Elder Scrolls stuff, Mecinar I'm guessing goes at the end of the page? And what should we do with Septim? If franchise-wide, please pothole the stuff to the appropriate games, and before or after Mannimarco? If just Skyrim, where?

So for any one curious Jay's video

Is anything confirmed. I'm not sure being just a Domestic Abuser is enough.

Like I said, they come just short of saying he's a rapist, and I'm pretty sure the only reason they don't outright state it is for monetization reasons. Otherwise they don't beat around the bush with his attempted assault on Tabitha and a implied discretion shot with another woman.

Potema goes right after Mannimarco above everyone else. The only work pothole you need is a wrap to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim around the part of her living into the Fourth Age.

Have one example from the works of Hideyuki Kikuchi:

What's the work?

Yashakiden: The Demon Princess is a story set within the demon-haunted city of Shinjuku. Setsura Aki is a warrior who lives in the city, a sort of uneasy ally of the ruthless Dr. Mephisto, a sort of Anti-Hero...Aki, however, finds his world changed when a figure of myth shows up in Shinjuku...enter "Biki" or...Princess.

Who is Princess?

A Chinese vampire of legend, also Da Ji, with a legacy of horrific atrocity behind her, Princess is a vicious killer and a coldhearted monster who becomes obsessed with Aki. During the past events with her, Princess was renowned for largescale massacres, flashbacks showing the atrocities she inflicted on China, such as having a multitude of pregnant women disemboweled, peasantry starved, massacred, burnt alive, etc. Arriving in Shinjuku, with intent to take it over and make Aki her slave, Princess arrives with her servitors Kikiou, Ryuuki, and Shuuran, on a ship where they kill the crew, and their ally Kazikil Bey (Or Dracula)...Princess? Sets out with murdering tons of people, turning multitudes of others into vampires.

She then initiates a full war in Shinjuku, while also fighting from the shadows. Little by little, tons of people are converted to vampires or killed. Knowing that the government might 'sterilize' the city, Princess plans to spread, while also seducing Aki and his allies, plotting to convert Aki's love interest to a vampire and see him drawn to her. Princess proceeds to be put on defensive when Dr. Mephisto betrays her group after joining as a mole, but she rebounds quick...as things reach the climax, even her own minions turn on her for their own purposes and she massacres all her vampire minions on a callous whim.

Gloating over how Aki is hers, for his power and beauty, Princess ends in a fight with him and his love interest. With Shinjuku saved, and Kikiou betraying her, she decides to simply allow herself to perish, beheaded at the end by Aki.

Heinousness?

Really, really high. Princess has an atrocity count in six digits, probably higher, from all she's done historically, turning Shinjuku into a vampire metropolis, butchering countless people throughout history, the carved pregnant women open to remove the unborn children etc. Easy pass.

Mitigating Qualities?

None. Princess is described as ice cold, and her interest in Aki is based entirely around using and manipulating him. She cares nothing for him as a person or her minions, casually massacring a host of her own vampire servants for kicks when she thinks her victory is sure. Through 8 books, Princess isn't shown to have an ounce of goodness.

Conclusion?

Keeper

Yes to Princess, no to Noah and Jay.

One post I got I've been sitting on for a while...this dude's a multimedia keeper. I've plucked keepers from the Krosmoz universe numerous times (a French universe that's the setting of Wakfu, the MMORPG Dofus, various manga and even movies). This post, after a hell of a lot of research and translation on my part, is of the closest thing the overall Krosmoz has to a Big Bad: Rushu, King of the Shushu.

Who is Rushu? What has he done?

One of the primordial gods that existed before the World of Twelve was truly created, the very first canonical thing Rushu did was track down his nine other demonic brothers and kill them, one after the other, so there would be no rivals to his power—only Mongrelamus escaped this purge.

The absolute lord of the destructive Shushu—the in-universe equivalent to demons—Rushu has spent his existence tempting and subverting souls into reincarnating as Shushu. Rushu signed a pact in the early days of existence to designate the World of Twelve as a sort of "neutral ground" between the gods. Rushu agreed...all, of course, so he could break the pact in the future. Rushu's overarching goal is to invade the World of Twelve and annihilate it and all life upon it. Why? He's already destroyed all life on his own world—Shukrute is a barren, hellish wasteland only because of the constant Rape, Pillage, and Burn he enforces among the Shushu. Rushu's monstrously abusive to even his own Shushu as well, incinerating them in droves for minor annoyances and, at one point in the animated series, using them as living projectiles.

Rushu's crimes are manifold. Among his more notable are, as described in the MMORPG and its lore documents are having his right-hand Djaul spread corruption in the World of Twelve via a loophole in the pact that allows Djaul into the material world; erecting a Wretched Hive known as Brakmar solely to proliferate slaughter, misery and evil, once leading to a gigantic and bloody war known as the Crimson Dawn; and, in the manga The Shushus of Rushu, hand-picking a number of Shushu to invade the World of Twelve and ravage it, resulting in bloody slaughter that was only stopped by the Iop (anti-)hero Goultard.

Rushu's most recognizable appearance occurs in the second season of Wakfu, where he's first seen forcing the Brotherhood of the Tofu—and Rubliax, a Shushu who flaked on his mostly Always Chaotic Evil kind—into a duel to the death against a giant monster (apparently a common occurrence). Rushu deals with the season's real Big Bad, Qilby, to gain access to the World of Twelve so he can erect utter Hell on Earth. The final battle of the season sees Rushu personally coming down to the field to lay waste to an entire army, and when Goultard arrives to even the odds, Rushu absorbs all of his own Shushu for a power boost and fights Goultard in an epic battle that ends with the two of them flung back into Shukrute. The OVAs reveal that battle, very much, ended in Goultard's favor, who kicks Rushu's royal ass and apparently takes over Shukrute himself.

Any mitigating factors?

Nope. There's a few slight hesitations I had—he's kinda Laughably Evil in the cartoon compared to Qilby, until the last few episodes where he goes One-Winged Angel and the narrative starts taking him as seriously as Qilby itself. The standard isn't a problem either, as while Qilby pulls Eviler than Thou on Rushu, Rushu's greater presence in the overall series and the sheer amount of bloodshed he's responsible for means Rushu has a greater rapsheet in general. He's easily the worst in the entire Krosmoz.

Conclusion?

Solid keeper.

[up][up][up] Pretty much every keeper from the series—including the final post I'll do for the series soon—is a Shushu. There's a reason for this: Shushu might not be strictly Always Chaotic Evil (Rubilax and Skribble reformed, at the very least) but they're pretty damn close. They're the one instance in the Krosmoz where they do evil for the sake of it.
