Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Just found out HBO’s producing a TV adaptation of Hellraiser. If nobody’s put their name down for it, I’m putting my name down for it. If anybody wants to collab, go right ahead.

One more since I'm on a roll, before my final Werewolf duo: White Wolf's Changeling: The Lost

From the new World of Darkness: "Player characters are Changelings, humans who were stolen from their lives by the True Fae of Arcadia and kept as slaves or servants. Changelings are no longer entirely human, having been tormented in positively Lovecraftian ways until they were broken in either body, mind, soul, or all of the above, and then rebuilt according to the True Fae's whims. The player characters, and many non-player character Changelings, are those who managed to fight, sneak, run, or trick their way back to freedom and the mortal world, but even when they return they bear the scars of their experience. Their very bodies have been changed into inhuman shapes. Their eyes have been opened so that they can see the truth of things, but they are also beset by hallucinations and tricks of perception. Worst of all is the constant, nagging worry: what if I never escaped? What if this is all a trick... or if I was allowed to leave?"

So...you are Changelings, taken by the fae...and there are some dark Fae out there. Chief among those...The Shrike and a thanks to Dragonfire for pointing this out:

Who is The Shrike?

A 'Charlatan,' that is a Fae living in exile in the mortal realm who have to bond with a human...like many Fae, the Shrike loves to steal children away. Unlike other Fae, she doesn't make Changelings out of them. No, rather, the reason for her nickname? She takes them to her home in the realm known as 'The Hedge' where she keeps many thorns spikes...and impales them there. Said mortals are hung there, dying in horrible agony before she returns to feast on them. She entered the human world one day...and found a kidnapper named Earnest Market, who fascinated her, as one who didn't eat his 'prey.' The Shrike decided to bond with him and was infected with his mindset, seeing humanity in a new light...she had the mind of a killer. And she loved it. Her mindset shifted from that of a Fae to a monstrous killer...

The Shrike proceeds to, with Earnest, go on a savage killing spree, hunting down others and dragging them to be tortured and murdered, with her now knowing how precious human life is and enjoying destroying it all the more. She keeps up a Larder in the fae world and human world and plans to go to new heights of murder. If encountered and exposed? She'll just make Earnest a new addition to said larder, to be tortured and murdered just like any other....but the Shrike persists,a ferocious serial killer until the PC might encounter her and put her down.

Heinousness?

Oh, lord yes. This sort of serial killing monster? There are loads of True Fae and nobody comes close to her sadistic depravity in torture and violence...what's more, by fusing with a human, she gets even worse. There's no issue here, for the New World of Darkness, she's as bad as a Fae serial killer can get.

Mitigating Qualities?

Interesting case...she was a sadist beforehand, when she was 'only' a killer. Now? She understands humanity, she touched a human mind...and it broguht her a greater understanding for the lives she takes, and she loves it. As for Earnest?

Earnest and the Shrike are not lovers. They do not possess feelings of lust or desire that can be expressed in the usual ways. Their lusts are expressed through causing misery and terror, and thus, the Shrike hasn’t changed too much. Her sadistic personality has simply shifted from the alien outlook of the True Fae to the pathetic and warped outlook of a human serial killer. Regardless of her motives, however, her victims will suffer just the same.

...Need I say more?

Conclusion?

A keeper for the New World of Darkness.

New proposal, from Hellbenders.

Who's the candidate?

Surtr, an ancient Destroyer Deity.

What does he do?

Thirty years before the start of the film, Surtr arrived to Earth to murder it. He possessed a six-year-old boy in order to do so (demons are incorporeal when not possessing somebody), but a priest caught him. Unable to exorcize the demon, the priest locked him away in the boy's body.

In the modern day, after the priest has died, his widow contacts the Augustine Interfaith Order of Hellbound Saints to try another exorcism. Surtr taunts and torments the agents sent after him, Macjen and Elizabeth, beating Machen's face against a wall and deliverately triggering his trauma from being molested before possessing him. He then posdesses Elizabeth, throws Machen in front of a moving car (killing everybody inside and nearly killing Machen), and drives the widow insane before going forth on his quest.

Surtr's very presence is a disaster for humanity. Mass possessions lead homicides to spike, with some surveillance footage showing mass riots, throats being ripped out abd cricifixions. But even wirse are the disappearances. 200 people vanish in a week's time, all with signs of a struggle. They were attacked by Surtr, who needs warm bodies for his ritual, and possessed by his demons.

The ritual in question? Surtr wants nothing more than to kill God. This will wipe out Heaven, Earth, and Hell. Pure Cessation of Existence for all that has ever existed. The Hellbound Saints arrive to put an end to the madness, while Surtr torments a couple of inexperienced priests trying to do a similar exorcism. The God-Killer briefly abandons Elizabeth's body to possess one of the priests, bites the eges out of the other priest, and tosses him into a Hell vortex that the possessed are leaping into. After returning to Elizabeth's bidy and biting the remaining priest's nose, Surtr briefly imitates Elizabeth to throw off Larry, a Hellbound Saint in love with her, before trying to possess him. However, the Order's leader Angus manages to bind Surtr to hinself, and has Larry kill him, sending both to Hell and averting the End of Days.

... Except Elizabeth lost a finger, which got caught in the virtex and kept it just open enough fir a Sequel Hook. It's been 8 years with no seqiel in sight, so I'm gonna say Surtr's arc is done.

Heinousness?

Big Bad, sets it.

Mitigating factors?

The film is a Horror Comedy, but Surtr is played seriously.

Nothing indicates gods lack agency.

Surtr does reference the paedpphilia scandals of the Catholic Church, but he's psychologically tormenting a couple Catholics at the time, and intends to destroy every child to ever exist.

Verdict?

[tup]. I believe this is the fifth incarnation of Surtr to qualify.
