Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Nemesis.

[tup] Totentanz.

Alright, time for an update for Austin's fic Revival, a crossover between The Loud House and The Cthulhu Mythos, which features the Loud siblings saving the world from an apocalypse orchestrated by Nyarlathotep.

The Loud House: The King in Yellow picks up three years after the previous story (which has one or two issues, but I'm not here to nitpick). In this story, Nyarlathotep has a daughter named Mia, who is being raised to be good by his former slave Patrick Stark. Mia doesn't have a good time functioning as a normal human girl, and turns to the Loud family for help in that department. Meanwhile, Cthulhu's half brother Hastur is planning a world domination bid in the wake of his brothers death, and Yog Sothoth is grooming a reborn Cthulhu for his/her/it's own schemes.

There's two candidates I am planning for today, Hastur and Yog Sothoth. Cthulhu is sapient in these stories but he, or at least his reborn self, is sympathetic and ultimately leaves humanity alone. But first I have to give an obligatory Nyarlathotep update.

Now Nyarlathotep...is still dead. But he has a few posthumous crimes to his name. See, he sires a daughter in the form of Mia with the help of a woman suggested to be Kesiah Mason. Mia has Nyarly's power, but is taking an opposite path of Wilbur Whately. Nyrarlathotep himself exists as but a shadow in her dreams, who is communicated with through with one of Lisa Loud's inventions. No real Freudian Excuse or Redeeming Qualities, aside from the mention that Azathoth was a bad egg himself before he lost his mind, and his claim that he became evil upon witnessing two primitive men killing each other. Lincoln shoots these excuses down, and Nyarlathotep pretty much agrees with him.

Nyarlathotep doesn't have that much in additional crimes save for two flashback chapters from his days as Maya Lottie; one flashback has her/him killing an ice cream vendor who refused to sell to him/her because the Voice of the Outer God's does not carry money. Another posthumous crime reveals he offered to resurrect a grieving girl's dead kitten, and integrated himself into a group of kids, and developed a small following. When their parents came to collect their children, Nyarlathotep warped the kitten into a mammoth sized monster to slaughter the parents, and has the children walk into oncoming traffic. So just another Monday in the life of Nyarlathotep.

Now onto Hastur, who I've been told doesn't have the same kind of media influence as his kin; I know him best from his role in Carmilla the Series best as Inanna's posthumous husband, or the basis of the Hanged King in the SCP Foundation Mythos. I also learned he was a Doctor Who villain.

Hastur also has the honor of being a pre Lovecraftian Eldritch Abomination (along with Dagon), who was canon welded into the mythos.

Also fun fact. If you go to the first page on this thread, you will notice that Hastur's image is used as the pic in the first post.

Who is Hastur ? What does he do ?

Hastur, taken from the mythos, is Cthulhu's half brother and greatest rival. As with many in the pantheon, he is portrayed as sapient in these fics, and is a disgruntled god king wannabe, envious of his brothers power. As with the rest of the pantheon, Hastur was among those summoned to wreck havoc on the world and among those thought to be killed when humanity fought back. The truth of the matter is Hastur was simply taken back to his home world, and returns to Earth after the dust settles.

In the wake of Nyarlathotep and Cthulhu's deaths, Hastur comes up with a plan to Take Over the World in their stead, and knows of Cthuhlu's contingency plan to be reborn through his daughter Cthylla. He spent a lot of his time seeking Cthylla out to kill her and his brothers unborn reincarnation, attacking his kingdom and laying waste to a civilization of Deep Ones, slaughtering his way through Cthylla's personal guards before she ultimately escapes. Cthylla is taken in by Yog Sothoth (who later kills her as she gives birth).

Hastur soon hides out in Royal Woods, setting up shop in a shopping mall, where he lurks in the shadows for the most part, but gradually reveals himself to onlookers to drive them out of their mind. He also builds a secret cult following, painfully turning his followers into brainwashed, mutated and disfigured Unspeakable Possessors. Throughout the first half of the story, he painfully and brutally kills his followers for the smallest slight or failure.

Hastur's goal throughout the story is to spread his sigil to humans and force the world under his influence. In the second half, Hastur learns of Lisa Loud and her many inventions (and is amusingly unfamiliar with television), and approaches Dr. Moist...a mad scientist who is actually an Elder One in a meat suit. Hastur plans on using Moist for his plans (killing the staff in his laboratory) and eventually has Moist approach Lisa with the offer of being her mentor. Yog Sothoth also approaches the Loud's after Lisa is taken, and plan a rescue mission for her when Hastur's plans are revealed.

At the mall, Hastur forces Lisa to work on a new invention, revealing his face to brainwash her. The plan is to use this device to broadcast the sigil around the world. Once it's activated, people all over the world are forcibly mutated into the unspeakable possessed, causing mass death and destruction. Hastur also seeks Mia, planning on using her (or Nyarlathotep's) power to open portals across the universe, and let the Outer God's lay waste once again. When the Loud's siblings reach the mall, Hastur's minions manage to capture Mia and attach her to another device, torturing her as it drains her essence. Just as the portals are opening, Cthulhu bursts though the entrance and fights with Hastur while the Loud sibling fight the Unspeakable Possessed, backed up with the Night Gaunts. The fight culminates with Cthulhu ripping off Hastur's face and stabbing out his eyes, killing him.

Redeeming Qualities or Freudian Excuse ?

That's a negatory ladies and germs.

Hastur is given full sapience and agency in this story, and honestly he's even more of a two dimensional mustache twirling bad guy than Nyarlathotep. His characterization I can best sum up is if Joffrey was raising a child who was mentored by Scar. He's got the brutality, the arrogance, envy, ambition, everything, although he feels like a watered down Nyarlathotep in those regards.

He's pretty much a cosmic psychopath who knows he's not as powerful as he says he is, and is angry about the fact. The closest he has to an excuse is that he believes he is entitled to Earth, and is murderously jealous of the power his brother has.

Heinous Standard

Clears it in his own way; his forcing transformations on people in to inhuman, disfigured abominations are painful and horrifying, and he plans to force these transformations across the world, causing mass death and destruction in his wake. In addition to this, like Nyarlathotep before him, Hastur intends to have his brethran and Outer God's rip the universe apart. Also through the story he kills just about everyone who slights him, and goes as far as to wipe out a civilization of Deep Ones, shown to be a sapient species.

Easy pass for Inanna's husband.

Now for Yog Sothoth, whose more on the "Quality vs Quantity" side of things.

Who is Yog Sothoth ? What does he/she/it do ?

One of the top Outer God's in the Cthulhu Mythos (either next too, or second to Azathoth, depending on who I ask). He is such a Top God and influence on the mythos, that the only reason that they are considered Cthuhlu's Mythos is because the High Priest became more famous.

That all being said, he gets a dose of Adaptational Wimp in these stories.

In these fics, Yog Sothoth is far more active than Asathoth, who is still sleeping, and has been passively watching Nyaralthotep's destruction of the world. When Nyarlathotep himself is destroyed, Yog Sothoth manifests and declares that he shall continue where Nyarlathotep left off in destroying the universe. He goes on this rant about how he's waited for eons about reclaiming the world from humans for his kin, and begins his conquest by picking off the Loud siblings. He uses his power over Space Time to slowly erase the children, youngest to oldest from existence, and tries to tear Patrick Stark's body apart as he uses the power of the Necromonicon to banish Yog Sothoth, and restore the Loud siblings.

Then comes the sequel, where Yog Sothoh manifests on earth, taking the form of a humanoid woman. Hastur asks Yog Sothoth for the location of Cthylla, but she refuses to answer. Yog Sothoth allows Hastur to continue on with his plans, before she finds the pregnant Cthylla, killing her by Traumatic C-Section. Yog Sothoth takes the newborn Cthulhu into the woods to raise, and groom into a new champion to defeat Hastur. It is pretty clear that Cthulhu is a case of Children Are Innocent, and Yog Sothoth bombards him with a series of attacks by ungodly creatures called the Soggoths. Day in, day out, Yog Sothoth subjects Cthulhu to these treatments to get him to fight, always healing him when he's on the verge of death. Cthulhu has received all kinds of scarring and mutilations as the cycle repeats. Over time, Cthulhu is protected by the Deep Ones, who all raise him as a surrogate family. When the time comes, Yog Sothoth tells Cthulhu that one of them is betraying him to his brother, and forces a reluctant and remorseful Cthulhu to butcher dozens of Deep Ones, striking him when he objects.

Towards the climax of the story, Yog Sothoth approaches the Loud family to reveal Hastur, his plans for the world, Lisa and Mia. Proposing an Enemy Mine, when he time comes for Cthulhu to fight and kill Hastur, Yog Sothoth soon reveals that he only wanted Hastur dead to have Cthulhu lead the apocalypse in Yog Sothoth's stead. After Cthulhu kills Hastur, Yog Sothoth orders him to kill the Loud's, but he refuses. After Yog Sothoth tries to do the deed himself, he is overpowerd by Mia, and with a final strike from Cthulhu is either destroyed or cast back into space time. Yog Sothoth is left mystified as his defeat as it was unforseen.

Redeeming Qualites or Freudian Excuse ?

Ultimately none. He brings up how he has fathered numerous children, and devoured the ones he deemed unworthy. He feels a brief moment of compassion towards baby Cthulhu, but goes back to seeing him as a weapon.

He has the same omnicidal goals as Nyarlathotep, but lacks his sadisitc personality. Instead, Yog Sothoth is portrayed as having a more controlling personality, and total god complex, as he believes that destroying the universe means taking it back from those he sees as beneath him. The closest thing he has t actual sadism, is when he tries to erased the younger Loud siblings in a deliberately slow manner.

As a parent to Cthulhu, he's an abusive groomer all the way. Ever since he was a baby Yog Sothoth would subject him to daily mutilations and attacks at the hands of his minions, trying to get Cthulhu to kill them in self defense. He then goes on to force Cthulhu to kill the rest of his surrogate family against his actual will.

Heinous Standard

As with Nyarlathotep, he has the same omnicdal goals and wants to destroy the universe, and his first deed on screen involves disintegrating small children (starting with a baby). That's pretty bad on its own. The bulk of his crimes are not as widespread as Nyarlathotep's or Hastur's, as he spends his time putting Cthulhu (whose newborn form is clearly made out to be an innocent child) through daily attacks and mutilations, sacrificing as cannon fodder just to make him stronger. Yog Sothoth also forces Cthulhu to kill his friends and surrogate family, something that makes the High Priest tear up.

Yog Sothoth's crimes may not be wide spread, and a little more on the personal side, but even so, his ultimate goal is to wipe out the world and once again rule the universe with the Outer God's.

Yes for William the Just, unequivocally. The actions of the Nemesis are a horrific force throughout Blood Omen 1, with the sheer levels of atrocity almost unmatched...it takes supernatural powerhouses to punch above, like Kain himself and the Hylden, but William's level of Rape, Pillage, and Burn is a class of its own.

Yes to Totentanz as well. Vykos is far more powerful and is far older. She's akeeper for her penchant of torture, while Totentanz simply goes into ferocious "kill everything" modes in ways the Sabbat itself would be leery of. It's also shown that the Clan itself considers Totentanz something fo an embarrassment for her adherence to Nazism which they consider beneath them.

Now, did someone say....rewrites?

  • Punkapocalyptic: Cunnilingus Igni is the wicked leader of the Children of Black Blood. Once a peaceful religion that worships Tex'co and views oil as a gift from their god, Igni usurped it after the death of the original leader. Converting the rest to violent fanatics, Igni launches raids to burn countless people alive and wipe out anyone else in 'preemptive strikes.' Leading many such raids himself to demonstrate his fanaticism, Igni savors the death and immolation of others, described contemptuously as just a scumbag seeking to impose his cruelty on the world.

  • Mage the Awakening
    • Aaron Murphy is a Banisher who leads the Huntsmen Cabal. A former soldier and lifelong misogynist who hates and fears women, Murphy used his Awakening to join the Banishers, whereupon he was given the chance to torture a female mage for over twelve hours. With the Huntsmen, Murphy hunts down and slaughters Mages under the pretense of defending the world while only using the hunt to gratify his sick desires, becoming a Serial Killer who savors the death and torture of as many women as he can, so consumed is Murphy with his desire to hurt others.
    • Joe Beal, "the Blood Of the Lamb." A Scelestus who was entranced from a young age by the story of Jesus, Beal grew to believe it made Christ the 'apex predator' upon his Awakening. Beal hunts down anyone he can, torturing them in every way he can think of, psychologically and physically while considering them his 'prey.' Eager to even worship the Abyss for more power, Beal's one joy in life to torture everything he sets his mind to, giving them all manner of pain he can conceive of until they beg for death.

  • Legacy of Kain: The Elder God is an ancient parasite upon the wheel of souls. Playing at being god to the ancient vampires, the Elder God orchestrated a catastrophic war between vampire and Hylden that saw innumerable members of both, and humanity, death. Upon the vampiric curse of immortality, the Elder God callously abandoned the vampires, leading to the suicide of most of the race. Later swaying Moebius to his side and inspiring him to his vampire purges, the Elder God manipulates almost every conflict in Nosgoth's history to kill countless people in order to satisfy its gluttony and desire for control. Hijacking Raziel's resurrection and manipulating the former vampire as its champion, The Elder God sends him to satisfy its plots and kill Kain with no concern for the slaughter left in the process so it may continue playing god and feasting upon the Wheel of Souls.
