Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

'Yes' to Dogerth, Xaphan, and Hydra.

'Np' to Sport

Keep Bile

A hearty welcome back to erazor, as well!

Now then, myself, Lighty and Scrags have a special treat to discuss....a collab betweenst the three of us!

What's the work?

We all know Disney, that lovable animation studio that has grown into a corporate empire of world domination proportions. Disney is creator to many a childhood memory, primarily in the form its bevy of animated films, many classics in their own right.

Well, a couple years back, a series of novels began to be published....titled A Twisted Tale, these novels are the equivalent of DC Elseworlds or Marvel What Ifs...? Taking place in alternate (and considerably Darker and Edgier) versions of the classic Disney films, the novels always have a simple premise that differentiates them from the mainstream movies, such as "What if Aladdin had never found the lamp"? or "What if the Evil Queen had poisoned the Prince?"

To kick us off? I will be discussing the Sleeping Beauty novel in this series, titled Once Upon a Dream... it's tagline? "What if Sleeping Beauty never woke up?"

Who is she?

The malicious Mistress of malice herself, Maleficent, serves as the Big Bad of the story. The same cruel sorceress with a heart as black as her attire we all know and grew up hating, Maleficent is given a....bit of an upgrade to her villainy for this wicked tale, so without hesitation, let's dive right in!

What has she done?

So, much like her original film counterpart, Maleficent is neglected an invitation to a magnificent party thrown by King Stefan and Queen Leah in honor of the birth of their daughter, Aurora, for the simple fact that Maleficent is evil as fuuuuuuuu

Maleficent, taking this as a personal insult and disrespect, decides to crash the party, appearing in a puff of green smoke and placing a curse upon baby Aurora that, upon midnight of her 16th birthday, the girl will prick her finger on a spindle and die. Not exactly the best baby shower present for the old King and Queen...

Luckily, three fairies are in the vicinity, and manage to alter the terms of Maleficent's curse, instead changing it so that Aurora will "merely" fall into an unending, unaging slumber until she is kissed by her true love.

When the time comes, Maleficent orchestrates events to get Aurora's finger pricked, and the teen falls into her deep slumber. To spare her parents the pain of their daughter's state and to prevent Aurora from feeling out of place when she finally awakes, the three fairies also cast a sleeping spell over the whole kingdom, so that they may only awaken when Aurora does.

The rest of the story is pretty much as most know...a prince named Phillip tries to save Aurora, and though Maleficent first tries to imprison him, later transforms into a flipping dragon and tries to kill him, Phillip stabs Maleficent through the heart, kisses Aurora awake, and the kingdom is saved.

So, where does our story come in? Well, in this variation of the tale, Maleficent had a little backup plan in store...when she cast the curse on little infant Aurora, Maleficent tied their life forces to one another, hoping for Aurora's death on her 16th birthday to transfer her life force over to Maleficent. Instead, as Maleficent is stabbed through the heart, she uses what is left of her life force to plunge Phillip into a sleep like Aurora and hop into Aurora's mind, dragging the minds and life forces of the rest of the kingdom inside a massive Lotus-Eater Machine based in Aurora's mind.

Leaving only Aurora's parents Stefan and Leah aware of the truth and locking them in a dungeon, Maleficent puts Aurora in a dreamworld where Maleficent overthrew the "evil" King and Queen Stefan and Leah, and now rules the kingdom alongside her teenage "niece" Aurora.

The dream passing by as mere hours outside in the real world, but nearly 16 years inside the dream (meaning poor Stefan and Leah were kept as completely sane, aware prisoners in a dream dungeon the whole time for that long, with Maleficent taking plenty time to emotionally torture them...), Maleficent bides her time, having functioned out a new curse that, when the clock strikes midnight in the real world, she will be able to take full control of Aurora's body and use it as a host for good, thus able to continue her evil ways.

In the meantime, though Maleficent has to work to keep Aurora placated and under the illusion that she's in a truly happy world, Maleficent maintains her powers and life force by regularly taking an innocent person aside in the dreamworld, stabbing them through the heart, and using their blood in a ritual that sustains her. And when she kills them in the dreamworld? They die in real life, too.

Having killed many of the kingdom's citizens this way, Maleficent, by the time Aurora is 16 in the dreamworld and the clock is growing ever-nearer to striking midnight in the real world, is just about nearing completion of her plan...only for Aurora to accidentally witness one of Maleficent's brutal killings, sending the horrified girl on the run from the castle.

Dropping all pretense of being a benevolent ruler, Maleficent begins ritualistically and routinely slaughtering the citizens of the kingdom to sustain her powers as she continuously uses her magic to try to hunt down Aurora, amassing literal piles of corpses all around her throne, with the poor folks dying in the real world even as they slumber with each stroke of Maleficent's knife.

Though employing a variety of manifested demons and psychological torments to try to hunt down Aurora—who has found the dreamworld versions of Phillip and the three fairies and regained her memories of her real life—Maleficent eventually decides for a more forward approach, and promptly executes Stefan and Leah just to cause Aurora so much pain that she'll come face Maleficent head on.

As Aurora and her friends arrive, Maleficent gleefully brags her villainy, holding the remaining dozens of kingdom citizens hostage in the room. Maleficent is a bit thrown off when Aurora asks the Armor-Piercing Question of if all their years together in the dreamworld, where Maleficent quite literally raised her, has meant anything to Maleficent, if Maleficent feels even an iota of care for her.

Maleficent, though taking a moment of hesitation and doubt....ultimately laughs at the idea, boasting that Aurora was only ever a means to an end to her before dueling her and trying to kill her friends in front of her and run the clock down until Maleficent can possess her body in the real world.

When the fairies point out to Aurora that they should take the fight with Maleficent elsewhere so as to protect the hostage civilians? Maleficent smiles cheerfully and begins vaporizing the innocent people for fun, before turning her magics onto the fairies and fatally wounding them when they halt her efforts long enough. Maleficent also takes this time to create a monstrous golem that takes on the forms of Aurora's parents, viciously and emotionally mocking and terrorizing her in all the ways Maleficent knows hurt her most.

Maleficent, proclaiming that she'll kill every last member of the kingdom before she's through as the final, ultimate spite towards Aurora and her family for their constant "disrespect", transforms into her might dragon form in a final attempt to conquer her foes, only for Aurora to fully realize her potential (since they are in her mind, after all) and pierce Maleficent's heart with a conjured spindle, killing her once and for all and freeing the minds of the kingdom from the Lotus-Eater Machine, and though the day is saved, dozens of the kingdom's populace are dead...Aurora's own parents among that number.

Does Maleficent have a Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Mmmmm.....this is a tricky one, but overall? I say no.

Maleficent is asked several times as to why she's so vile and wicked, to which she merely responds that she's getting revenge for...not being invited to the kingdom's party. This is blatantly called out as completely psychotic thinking, and Maleficent is noted to have been malicious and harmful to others long before that, so yeah, excuse is out the window.

As for redeeming features....so, Maleficent raises Aurora in the Lotus-Eater Machine, pretending to be a caring aunt who treats Aurora rather coldly and noticeably flinches and shirks away at any major affections that Aurora tries to bestow on her. When Aurora escapes, Maleficent drops all pretenses and happily tries to orchestrate her demise and take over Aurora's body and destroy her mind....all the way until Aurora explicitly asks Maleficent if she ever cared for Aurora, and if their time together as "aunt" and "niece" meant anything.

Maleficent.....noticeably pauses, hesitantly answering that Aurora was only a means to an end. But when Aurora pushes again, remarking that that's not an answer to the question she asked, Maleficent—though the narrative notes that she might have the faintest, slightest glimmer of humanity in her that cared for Aurora—coldly and unflinchingly proclaims that any feelings she may have had towards Aurora are ultimately irrelevant, and that her own power and return to life matter most. Maleficent then gleefully and laughingly tries to finish off Aurora while tormenting her with a horrific mockery of her parents and killing innocent people in front of her.

After Maleficent's defeat, her only surviving essence—Lianna, who turned on Maleficent at the very end to help Aurora due to having care for the girl—reveals that she's dying because she's just a piece of Maleficent's essence, and is using her body to speak to Aurora one last time. Lianna outright states that she grew to care for Aurora, and notes that Maleficent had the capacity to care for others too....but never did, never putting anyone else over her own power and selfishness. And when Lianna finally fades away, it leaves nothing but Maleficent's corpse, as it was before she became a dark magic sorceress, leaving only a beautiful young woman with horns touched with Lianna's smile of peace.

So yeah, ultimately, though it's a bit tricky at first reading? Maleficent shows hesitation and even semi-admits that she had grown to have some slight care for Aurora through her own avoidance of Aurora's questions....but, the thing is? Maleficent then tears down the idea that any care she might have had for Aurora would ever tamper with her own lust for dominance, and she then eagerly tortures and tries to kill Aurora. And, as Lianna herself says, Maleficent had every capacity to love and care for others, but chose to service her own wickedness and hatred instead, solidfying that, even if Maleficent might have cared for Aurora slightly? She shoved that aside and happily continued with her plans and even went out of her way to hurt the girl, because Maleficent's number one goal is herself and her own power. Nothing else.

Does the story want you to pity Maleficent for being so engulfed in her own evil that she refuses to change her ways and care for others? Perhaps, but any sort of sympathy or genuine redeeming feature Maleficent may have had is demolished willingly and knowingly by her as she chooses to embrace her own evil over anything else, and Lianna's influence shows that Maleficent always had the ability to be at peace and care for others....but never chose to.

Heinousness?

As a standalone story, alternate universe, it has its own heinous standard....Maleficent stomps on it as if it were a puppy while cackling.

Maleficent is arguably at her worst ever seen here, indulging in long-term Mind Rape of Aurora and her parents, ritualistically killing dozens of men, women and children to sustain her magic, planning the ultimate massacre of the entire kingdom...and then there's the whole 'cursing a baby because she wasn't invited to a party'.... Maleficent is a nasty, vile piece of work, and one of the worst in the entire Twisted Tales series.

Final Verdict?

Maleficent's relationship with Aurora makes her a bit complex, but the final, undeniable result is that she verbally shoots down the idea that any care she has for Aurora is relevant, before mocking Aurora as nothing even worth Maleficent's time, at which point she gleefully torments and tries to bodyjack the poor girl and destroy her mind. Maleficent is a textbook example of subverting Even Evil Has Loved Ones, and she's a Keeper, IMO.

Diablo is in the story, but Maleficent never once speaks to him or does anything except idly stroke him like an accessory, and when he's put in danger by Aurora's magics, she doesn't even blink even as the bird crows frantically, so that's nothing redeeming or some such

Setting?

Super Robot Wars X is another entry of the SRW franchise. In the world of Al-Warth, the settings of Cross Ange, Gurren Lagann and Mashin Hero Wataru are one while The Keepers of Order, worshippers of Ende, god of creation, ensure peace on the land.

As Doakdar, Big Bad of Wataru invades, many people from other worlds start to appear in Al-Warth. When The Protagonist steals a mecha from the Keepers and leave the organization alongside a magical creature named Spero, the plot starts while our hero/ heroine meets different characters, fought in the new war in Al-Warth and discovers the secrets of the order itself.

Of course, the real villain is nothing more that Ende himself, who is actually a Eldritch Abomination that is a Emotion Eater that loves despair as his favorite taste.

Who is Ende The Devourer?

Ende was a divine beast that was born from nothing that created Al-Warth after taking several humans survivors from the war agains the Anti-Spiral from Gurren Lagann as refugees, however, Ende's motivation to do it was to feed in their emotions, with him taking a liking to despair. The Keepers of Order? A way to keep some conflict on-going to keep feeding in despair.

Also, Black Noir from Might Gaine? An AI that believed being Ende, Ende knew of it and allowed Black Noir to believe that he was god because Black Noir love for despair-inducing stories was good food.

During the game, many of the forces that were summoned to Al-Warth, thus bringing war to the world were summoned for nobody but the Keepers of Order themselves and also, Marianne, Lelouch's mother from Code Geass is revived for Ende to cause more struggle and when Lelouch manages to erase Marianne's memories of her beloved husband Charles—who was her motivation—Ende decides to eat the soul of the lost Marianne.

To most personal actions? Ende serves as The Corrupter for The Heavy Celric Obssidian, turning him into a more unhinged magician that eventually murders his master—who believed that was following Ende's will—to become the Founder of the Keepers of Order, the highest possible rank that no one else had, in a path that eventually lead to Celric becoming a inhuman berserker that dies fighting the protagonist in the normal route (though in the IF route, Celric survives).

After the defeat of the Anti-Spiral and when the X-Cross is returning to Al-Warth, they find the world completely broken and are attacked by the Keepers before Ende himself appears in front of the X-Cross, telling them that now he wants to taste their homeworlds and cause more disasters in them for his own enjoyment, Ende devour the entire world of Al-Warth to give despair to X-Cross...before vomiting it due to positive emotions. The fight continues and Ende is defeated by Spero, the Magic companion of the Protagonist—actually a fledging Divine Beast like Ende meant to be his second body alongside the Xelguard (the OG mecha) and the eventual Founder—thus ending Ende's reign.

Ende also appears in a DLC for SRW T where he corrupts Nevallina, Final Boss of V, fuse with her and...that's all.

Heinous stardard?

SRW X features many heinous villains, Black Noir, the Anti-Spiral, Embryo, Gargoyle...is a jacked heinous standard, with tons of mass murder.

However, Ende is the main reason of the chaos in Al-Warth, having manipulated conflicts for thousands of years just to enjoy food he likes. The Keepers, at Ende's orders, summon many factions from other worlds, thus bringing the conflict to their world with a DLC scenario showing that when the war was ending, the Keepers—now ruled by Celric—went to destroy towns at the Celric's—and thus Ende's—orders. Also, as mentioned above, Ende deliberately allowed Black Noir to mess with several worlds just to get more food.

His final goal? Allow Al-Warth to be destroyed and go to feed in the despair of other three worlds which would be at this complete control.

Mitigant traits?

None at all. In fact, the final battle has Spero deliberately poiting that Ende has moral agency, he might a Emotion Eater but his fondness for despair is a taste, Ende explicitly mentions that he can feed in positive emotions and actually is kinda happy at eating some...as a condiment, too much of them simply enrage him to the point of making him vomit. Spero himself is a divine beast and despite initially loving despair, his Character Development made Spero enjoy more positive emotions, to the point that the ending has him thanking the X-Cross for allowing him to taste many different emotions without having to cause a war like Ende did.

Verdict?

Leaving it to the thread.

Yes, delightfully, to Maleficent, the Mistress of All Evil.

Continuing our collaboration, I've got the next upcoming from the series' take on Beauty and the Beast, called As Old As Time. This one takes a very fantastical overhaul on the general premise with the main "what if" question being "what if Belle's mother was the Enchantress?" The one responsible for cursing the Beast and all of his subjects?

Our villain tonight is...not Gaston, actually. Everyone remember that creepy asylum owner voiced by Tony fucking Jay? Yeah.

Who is Monsieur D'Arque? What has he done?

Owner of the asylum up the road, D'Arque is a shifty, ice-cold man distrusted by the locals for all the going-ons inside his little asylum despite the "modern" medicine he claims to practice. D'Arque's history goes back, in this version, with Maurice, Belle's father; D'Arque's full name is Frédéric D'Arque, and he's an old friend of both Maurice and the husband of Mrs. Potts, Alaric. D'Arque is esteemed by the king and the queen of France for his miracle work and he seems to be a good enough guy, but he does have one minor problem...Fantastic Racism.

This is where the "fantastical" part comes in; there are magic people and even supernatural beings all throughout France, called les charmantes. D'Arque is actually a charmante, and despite having nothing but the patience of his "pure" friends for it, D'Arque still violently takes out the magical parts of himself in order to make himself human. D'Arque's racism came to a point that when he found out his best friend Alaric was helping the charmantes escape persecution, D'Arque murdered him in cold blood.

When the story takes us to the present day, Gaston—whose characterization is mostly intact from the original—proposes as he does in the original to lock up Belle's father Maurice in the asylum to force Belle's hand into marriage. D'Arque agrees, but only for his own relevant interests...D'Arque ends up kidnapping Belle herself, drugs the shit out of her and experiments on her to remove any trace of magic from her blood. D'Arque has a reason to be afraid; Belle's mother, Rosalind, is a powerful charmante who's lived in his asylum for years.

D'Arque hits his stride in the last part of the story where the asylum's entire population is revealed to consist of innocent charmantes D'Arque has been "torturing the magic out of" for years on end. Trusted enough by the king and queen to help employ a Final Solution across France, D'Arque has droves of charmantes taken to his asylum and experimented on endlessly; vivisected alive and screaming and sewn back up again, lobotomized, injected with iron, tortured day in and day out with techniques comparable to Middle Age brutality (literally—Belle stumbles across a book called "Successful Torture Methods of the Late 11th Century" that D'Arque literally uses as a reference). Countless have died—some give out from the stress of the experiments, and others, D'Arque cheerfully notes, kill themselves, and others experimented on until they're "cured" of their magic.

Belle stumbles across D'Arque's private office, containing the grisly remains of dozens of his victims—skulls lined in jars, some with brain matter still attached, severed torsos and gruesome medical logs on those who lived and died through his treatment—until D'Arque discovers her, Rosalind and Maurice. D'Arque attempts to murder his old friend Maurice alongside Belle to keep his operation clandestine...until Gaston suddenly stabs him in the back. Gaston, now the hero having slain the wicked beast, proposes Belle's hand in marriage standing a foot away from D'Arque's corpse.

I love you, Gaston.

Any mitigating factors?

Only one thing to note is that D'Arque seems to have considered Alaric a friend in his own deranged way. Belle takes D'Arque genuinely off-guard by figuring out D'Arque murdered Alaric and D'Arque immediately goes into self-justification mode, snarling that Alaric forced his hand when Alaric "betrayed his people."

TBH, the longer I read into that scene, the more it becomes clear to me D'Arque's care for Alaric and his response to Belle accusing him of murdering another "pure" human—of which D'Arque oh-so-sanctimoniously claims to the villagers he'd never hurt (even disregarding the whole "former charmantes" thing)—is born out of his own delusional hypocrisy. D'Arque still murders Alaric for a twisted, distorted reason, absolves himself of all blame for it and prepares to do the exact same thing to his other "old friend" and his daughter. I think D'Arque is safe.

Aside from that? Zip. D'Arque's asylum is one of the most "holy shit" vile things I have ever seen out of a Disney property. He's far, far across the standard, even for the series in general.

Conclusion?

Keeper.
