Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I have to object. The anime is just an adaptation of part of the manga. It just didn't adapt the full thing.

Have to concur with Lighty, if something just stops short it's a cheap way to get someone on and skipping due diligence for the candidate imo.

The only thing fun about it was the violence and the performance of the guy who played Max.

This is why I plan on being more selective with whom I effortpost.

What Is the Work?

Urban Chaos is a game by Eidos released in 1999, and a Steam rerelease in 2013. It has nothing to do with Urban Chaos: Riot Response, also published by Eidos.

D’arci Stern is a tough rookie cop working for the UNPD in Union City. Things are going alright, until a gang called The Wildcats starts causing mayhem. Crime rates start to increase, and it’s up to D’arci and a vigilante known as Roper McIntyre to take them down.

Oh, and a bunch of other crazy shit happens later on, but I’ll get into that later.

Who Is he?

Mack Bane is the head of the Wildcats, and a crooked politician harboring a dark secret.

What has he done?

A Corrupt Politician running for mayor of Union City, Mack Bane is the secret leader of the Wildcats, a gang of criminals whom he allows to roam the city. The Wildcats, under Bane’s orders, proceed to wreck the city. Originally a simple criminal gang, under Bane’s orders, they become a terrorist organization. Crime starts to run rampant, innocents are held hostage and executed, bombs are placed over the city, and drugs are being trafficked all across town. No matter what happens, the police can’t stop the increasing number of crime, as it keeps growing every day, the Wildcats even planning to take down the police force and run the town themselves under Bane’s orders.

So D’arci invades Bane’s mansion ready to arrest him. Bane makes a misogynistic comment about D’arci before revealing a secret of his. Turns out, Bane’s a thousand-year-old ancient warlock with ties to Satan. See, Bane’s out to fulfil a doomsday prophecy, which would mean not only the destruction of Union City, but the entire world as well. Bane plans to unleash an apocalypse and rule over what’s left. And if that wasn’t enough, D’arci tells Roper that Bane has missiles aimed at Union City, planning to destroy the entire city and skip out of town. Once the missiles have been disarmed by D’arci, Bane unleashes a demon known as the Baalrog (not that one, and definitely not that one) onto Union City that causes havoc. Once the demon’s down and the Wildcats have all been slain, Bane resorts to taking civilians hostage on the rooftops and performing a brutal ritual to complete the prophecy, hoping to unleash a Hell on Earth.

Murdering the citizens for his ritual, as well as letting his men incapacitate and injure several cops and civilians on the rooftops, Bane begins to get ready to perform the ritual… only to blow himself up thanks to D’arci tampering with the building’s ventilation system. D’arci and Roper watch from afar, bright smiles on their faces, and then the credits role.

Yeah.

Redeeming Qualities?

Zilch. One part dirty politician, another part evil warlock who plans to commence the apocalypse to fulfill a prophecy.

Heinousness?

The one behind everything, settles it.

Conclusion

Easy keep, even if his death was anticlimactic as hell.

Well, here is my promised EP

What's the Work?

Revisioned: Tomb Raider Animated Series is an anthology series of 10 animated shorts, all of which are non-canon to any of the games. Each story has its own animated style and tone (ranging from serious to completely comedic) and written by different people (like Warren Ellis and Gail Simone). Each story has little to do with each other and not connected in any way. My candidate comes from the very first story, which is "broken" into a 3 shorts, all of which has the length of 17 minutes. The story is called "Keys to the Kingdom" and it's starts with a professor giving a lecture about his theory of the Afterlife and demonstrating the power of Ankh of Osiris to the public. A religious group called "The Cabal" kills him and tries to get the artifact for themselves, leading Lara Croft in beating them by using the artifact to bring Osiris under her command to deal with the group. As the group have been dealt with, Lara banishes Osiris back and resurrects the professor, only for him to complain that he doesn't like the world of the living anymore and warns Lara about a possible "disaster" and then kill himself by jumping from the window. Unknowing to Lara, the body of a guy, who sacrificed himself to shield Lara from the bullets during that firefight, got possessed by the god, who didn't liked that humanity stopped worshipping him.

Full short can be viewed here:

Who is Osiris?

One of the Gods (among which is Zeus and a Christian God), who reside in the different realm, Osiris grow displeased with modern religions, which forgotten about him, and snatched a plan of his own to bring humanity to worshipping him once again. When Lara Croft summoned him into his statue to deal with "The Cabal" and then seemingly banished him back, Osiris manages to remain in mortal realm in the form of a little orb and possess the body of Zahir Zalat (the dude, who shielded Lara from the bullets with his own body). Using him to spread the word about the power of his artifact, Osiris then manipulated Lara into going into the realm of Gods (called Pleroma) and then lured "The Cabal" team (which hunted after Lara) there as well, leading to their spirits being trapped there. After this he lured all leaders of modern religions there as well (by calling them and telling them to go there), causing the same effect on them, after which he closed the portal, leading to all of trapped dying, due to their spirits being forever separated from their bodies. As Osiris predicted, this led to one of the groups discovering the bodies and another religious group saw this and thought that that group killed their leaders. This started a massive war between all religious factions, which brought chaos and destruction all over the city with massive number of deaths.

Using this opportunity, Osiris tries to announce to the world that "All your religions are false! I am Osiris and...", but he was knocked down by Lara Croft, whom Gods released (due to not wanting her there) and thus resurrected, Lara uses Ankh of Osiris to banish Osiris back for real, leading to him standing with all other gods in Pleroma and finishing Christian God's phrase: "As it was in the beginning. So shall it be in the end."

Heinousness

Osiris scores easily the biggest bodycount from all series. Due to shorts being non-canon, i consider only other villains from this series of shorts to affect heinous standard and all of them are really generic, most of them only tries to steal artifact and kill Lara, while the rest have killed only a couple more people, with even deeds that had the potential to be notable being completely off screen. Osiris in his turn caused a massive civil war among religious groups, that put streets of the city on fire and caused chaos and destruction all over it with massive casualties, so Osiris easily passes this term.

Mitigating Factors

Well, as I was convinced, Osiris has just enough characterization to count. He has few lines of dialogue, that do manage to show him as manipulative and his final phrase, along with dialogue from one of the Gods, does showcase that he has a clear motivation of wanting to be worshipped by humanity again.

His final scene has him finishing the phrase of Christian God, showcasing that they are chill with him, but then he doesn't showcase any care toward them and before that he outright wanted to screw them over by making humanity believe only in him.

Conclusion

What do you say?

  • The man who would become the Yōkai Wanyūdō was once a tyrannical daimyō known for mistreating his subjects, often having them drawn on the back of an Ox cart. After his assassination, the daimyō was reborn as Wanyūdō, a wrathful spirit in the form of a flaming cart wheel. Usually sighted in urban areas after dark, Wanyudou ruthlessly runs down and dismembers anyone he comes across, dragging their souls to Hell with him. One legend tells of a mother who glimpsed the creature through her window. Wanyūdō spared her, telling her to tend to her child...only for the woman to discover the infant's limbs scorched off, a sick reminder that Wanyūdō is just as sadistic in death as he was in life.
