Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up]It says here. He wants to reorder the universe to his will. It's been so many years since I've seen it that I can't remember what that meant.

Anyway my batch.

  • Jonathan is a leader of black circle who tortures vampires for days even weeks, bringing them back from the edge of death, only to resend them to near death over and over again in order to gain power to rejuvenate himself. Desiring to return the gods in order to increase his power, Jonathan over his long run in the series, Jonathan attempts to kill the pregnant fiance who carries the possible heir to faerie in order to start a civil war between the fey which could kill thousands, tortures Louise-Cesare to near death, unleashes zombie vampires to kill the north american vampire senate, tries to crash magical Hong Kong into normal Hong Kong which would kill millions in order to create an energy wave to exterminate the various vampire senates which oppose the gods and tried to unleash the ancient horrors in order to conquer all. A complete sociopath only interested in himself, Jonathan is eventually revealed to graft the skin and ghosts of creatures and people to himself in order to gain their powers, keeping them in agonizing pain all the while.
  • "The Best Laid Plans": During the mass arrests, Professor James Moriarty gleefully guns down several of his associates as hes being arrested either for trying to escape or just to tie up lose ends. It is revealed that Moriarty has experimented on dozens of people, fusing them with animal parts and leaving them in agonizing pain and later uses a failsafe to dispose of them before making his way to Reichenbach Falls in order to duel Holmes to the death.
  • "The Deadly Sin of Sherlock Holmes", by Tom English: Brother Moriarty is fiendish monk who communes with the devil in order to create a magical book inked with his own blood. Moriarty enchants it so that anyone who reads it will become mind controlled with the need to murder and mutilate people in the most horrific ways possible, with it even leading to the creation of Jack the ripper, over two centuries after his death, ensuring a legacy of evil.
  • Mycroft Holmes: Adam McGuire is a racist businessman who plans to re-introduce slavery to the world. After discovering oil across the beaches of Trindad, Mc Guire uses slave labor to illegally mine it and in order to scare away the locales, murders their young children and has their bodies placed on the beach in order to frighten them off. Mc Guire contrary to the facade he puts on to his investors, treats his slaves horrifically, having them beaten, chained and starved into submission and chains them to the island's defensive guns to be used as cannon fodder, before detonating a failsafe to kill them when they get rescued. Mc Guire captures Cyrus Douglas and tries to murder him in front of his best friend Mycroft Holmes before trying to beat Mycroft to death persoanlly for foiling his operation. A total sociopath out to fuel his racist beliefs and get rich, Mycroft sums up Mc Guire well as "a human being devoid of the common thread of human decency."
  • The Lost Husband: William Gatherford is a fiendish adventurer and scientist who discovers a way to make zombies during a trip to Haiti and decides to use it to enrich himself. Gatherford persuades hundreds of poor, disenfranchised workers into signing up with him, before having them experimented on and tortured to death and brought back as undead puppets which he uses to increase the profits of his business enterprises by decreasing costs of labour. His zombies kept in an eternal state of pain, Gatherford sics them on Holmes and Watson and reveals that he intends to spread this operation across the entire world, killing the world's poor and disenfranchised in order to maximize profits for the rich, all in the name of his smug elitism.

A handy yes to Ivan. And yes to Haruka, too. The idol singer business is pretty fucked up—maybe not necessarily to those levels, but I'm not surprised we got a full-on deconstruction of the business.

One other I want to get up tonight. I shot this guy down way back, but on a rewatch I think I can make a case...

What's the setting?

The 2015 The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a spy thriller based off the old 60s show, which in turn was actually based off a minor character from an old James Bond novel. Napoleon Solo, played in this film by the impeccable Henry Cavill, a quick-thinking, smooth-talking American agent from the CIA, paired up with Illya Kuryakin, a cool-headed and stoic USSR agent from the KGB, teaming up to stop a deadly pair of lovers named the Vinciguerras from threatening world peace. Hijinks ensue.

Neither of the Vinciguerras—mostly Victoria, as her husband is mostly just a playboy loaf who only gets serious toward the end—count. They genuinely love each other. There is one minor villain, though, who may be worth a look: Rudolph von Trüsch, or "Uncle Rudi."

Who is Uncle Rudi? What has he done?

The German uncle of one of our protagonists, Gaby, Rudi seems to be nothing more than a racist jackass at worst with a history with the Nazis, only because Rudi was forced to work with them. This, of course, is bullshit. Rudi is not only working with the Vinciguerras in their nuclear warhead plot, he was a very much willing Nazi, and one of the most sadistic out of all of them.

His methods very clearly based on Josef Mengele, Rudi's methods and artistry were so tireless his vile methods were mistaken as the work of three separate people. Earning title as lovely as "the Dark Angel of Ravensberg," "the Butcher of Belsen," "the Fifth Horseman" and the "Doctor of the Apocalypse," Rudi is a Torture Technician par excellence who lived a life as a bullied kid and resolved there were two masters to life: pain and fear. Seeing the World War as the perfect canvas to paint his art, Rudi tortured countless people to death during his time with the Nazis. When Napoleon Solo ends up into his clutches, Rudi gleefully shows him a scrapbook full of pictures he's kept as memoirs of his artwork—pictures showing everything from piles of severed fingers, depictions of medical torture, injecting foreign substances into eyeballs—while concluding there are two types of torture. For information, and for fun. Rudi is intending the latter on Napoleon.

Rudi gets to work torturing Solo with the electric chair, and when it starts to break down Rudi simply decides to move onto some "old-fashioned" torture, remarking he'll start with the pliers. Illya comes to the rescue and ties the wicked bastard into his own electric chair, where Rudi without a second of hesitation betrays his employers and sells them out, happily willing to inform on anyone, even his own niece. Illya and Napoleon excuse themselves to debate what they should do with him...just as the "glitch" in the electric chair fixes itself. When Illya and Napoleon look back, Rudi is already burning to death.

"Damn," says Napoleon. "...I left my jacket in there."

Any mitigating factors?

I dismissed Rudi offhand years ago on concerns of Offscreen Villainy, but rewatching his scenes I don't actually think that's a fair assessment. This is a PG-13 film, so there's no lingering on the visceral details of Rudi's torture, but Rudi's scrapbook shows us literally all the evidence we need to confirm Rudi's very prolific history of torture. He's miles worse than the Vinciguerras and he's the one villain in the film notably lacking anything close to a redeeming quality, even his own daughter.

TBH, my only slight hesitation is his Karmic Death is played for a slant of black comedy. My counter to this is that Rudi himself isn't. Man from U.N.C.L.E. is mostly standard, lighthearted spy fare with nothing unusual for the genre until the moment Rudi reveals his horrific history of torture and death, which is easily the darkest moment in the entire movie.

Conclusion?

I say...keep him, after some reconsiderations.

Not gonna say it, but I’ll pothole it though. So of course, [tup] to Rudi. Sixth for a Guy Ritchie movie now? Wow. Also, along with Uncle Rudi and names like Brick Top, Jafar and Dry Eye, Guy Ritchie villains (specifically CM s) also seem to have the tendency to mostly go by short names.

Thanks ACW. I think I’ll try to get to it tonight...if I can get out of work on time.
