Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So this seems like a slow day, so how about a quick discussion topic - what are the most common occupations CMs have? I'm gonna guess noble/monarch/conqueror probably tops the list, with corporate executive, spy, military person, and crooked law enforcement person having good showings as well.

Before we answer that, I should note that I created an Ask the Tropers thread about how this thread goes off-topic way too much for silly reasons. Any responses to that query belong there. Do not reply to this post.

One other Lighty and I are splitting to get us back on topic.

What's the setting?

Demon Hunter Mitsurugi is a forgotten, ancient tokukatsu show from the early 70s. Never officially translated or imported in anyway to the West and swept quickly under the rug in its native Japan, Mitsurugi challenged conventional toku standards at the time by employing very elaborate (for the time) stop-motion animation for its kaijin fights. Said fights also chewed up the budget something fierce, leading to an early death at only 12 meager episodes. The story itself is as basic as toku gets; in feudal Japan, ninjas who dress in contemporary bicycle helmets cross swords to create a giant samurai god called Mitsurugi, in order to fight the wicked Scorpion Army.

Scorpion lieutenants were nasty to a tee, and the stop-motion Monster of the Week always had a large bodycount, but aside from Big Bad Lord Demon Scorpion himself (Lighty will cover him when he's better) there was only one named Scorpion mook with enough individual personality and atrocity to qualify. From the tenth episode we have Bachibachi.

Who is Bachibachi? What has he done?

The most wicked Scorpion lieutenants we see, Bachibachi is the commander of the giant, rampaging kaijin Kabuton. For the glory of the Scorpion Army, Bachibachi directly commands Kabuton to lay waste to entire caravans, towns and villages, amassing an insane body count of civilian lives through it as a matter of course. Bachibachi focuses on one specific village, spiriting away countless people to feed Kabuton's voracious appetite, until only a scarce few, terrified survivors are left in hiding. Bachibachi is also unique among every other Scorpion lieutenants in that he's a terrible boss; at one point, trying to kill the heroes, he runs through one of his own men without a care in the world.

Bachibachi introduces himself capturing his latest batch of villagers, mostly kids, to feed to Kabuton, while cutting down everyone in his way. When a mob of angry parents try and march up Kabuton's mountain to get their children back, Bachibachi gleefully has Kabuton flatten them all with a flaming boulder.

The villagers, to defeat Kabuton, have prepared a special poison to kill the beast in its sleep. Two children are sent to deliver this poison, whereupon Bachibachi intercepts them and throws the poisoned bottle into the vicinity of his own men, whereupon a bunch of them choke to death on the poison gas—to his apathy. Bachibachi decides to have the two kids fed to Kabuton, using them to goad out the three Mitsurugi ninjas. After the halfway point of the episode, Bachibachi steps up his game even more. Invading the village disguised as a child, Bachibachi exposes the old man keeping after the survivors to his own poison, resulting in the old man horribly dissolving alive.

Bachibachi tries to feed everyone to Kabuton, heroes and innocent villagers left alike. Bachibachi gloats about his master plan; he's going to use the poison to contaminate the region's entire water supply, and between that and Kabuton's vicious rampages, Edo will be left as a land of death when he's through. Bachibachi even spitefully murders one of the last remaining villagers in the episode's final battle, immediately preceding Bachibachi's death when Kabuton accidentally blows him up with a wayward fireball.

Any mitigating factors?

None. As a rule, Scorpion mooks are nasty, but seldom did they ever get names, let alone independent characterization. Bachibachi stands out for a multitude of reasons, between Demon Scorpion's minimal influence in episode 10, him directly controlling the Monster of the Week (and said Monster of the Week probably has the highest onscreen body count in the show), and having an actual name compared to all the other no-name guys? Bachibachi keeps, solidly.

Conclusion?

Keeper. Demon Scorpion will follow relatively soon.

Here's Demon Scorpion:

who is Demon Scorpion?

The head of the Scorpion Army from outer space, arriving to take over the world and destroy Edo, Demon Scorpion dresses in a crimson onmyoji outfit, and celebrates his freedom by unleashing the Scoprion army. Now, in a word, everything he does? Centered around destroying Edo and killing tons of people. Demon Scorpion promptly summons one of his monsters and sics it loose on Edo to destroy the city...killing loads of people in the process.

The next few episodes? Follow this pattern, with him unleashing members of the Scorpion army to destroy vast swaths of civilian territories while cackling like a madman...and getting new schemes, like distributing money that carries a plague to infect the people of Edo and kill them that way. In another instant? He unleashes a pterodactyl-like monster to raze down civilian buildings filled with people...or kills a group of kids out of spite.

Now, the Mitsurugi siblings continuously save people, prompting him to get more and more vicious and desperate in his methods. Demon Scorpion decides to take his operation further, threatening all of Japan as he calls up the 'Perfect Monster,' by the end...deciding to annihilate Edo (again) before slaughtering his way through Japan....thanks to the sacrifice of their mentor, the Mitsurugi siblings are able to finally defeat him and in one of the most hilarious ends to a Tokuvillain, they rush up, gang stab him and blow him up with a grenade.

Mitigating Qualities?

Zip. He's gloriously over the top and murder happy, and constantly plans for massive amounts of murder and death explicitly targets civilians to do as much damage as humanly possible and is set to keep this going as much as possible.

Conclusion?

Easy keeper.

[tup] Bachibachi/Double Bachi and Demon Scorpion.

As for common CM occupations, not much discussion to be had- Evil Overlord is the obvious answer. Hell, Scorpion looks to be one.

Now, least common- that is another story. For example, I can only think of one Idol Singer CM (that being Sing Love/White Rock Shooter).

By the way, I am only about halfway through the fic, but I feel comfortable giving a super late [tup] to fic!Mark Jefferson. The nightmares, which seem to be flashbacks, more-or-less show him in the act of sexual defilement, and he is given the crime of killing Rachel Amber and pinning it on Nathan, whereas in the game this was only implied and officially Nathan killed Rachel. Also we actually see him torturing Victoria, so there is that as well. Overall, I would say he does just about enough different stuff to qualify.

I know this is long overdue, but I just wanted to get that out of the way.

Based on the EP, [tup] to that version of Kaa.

Feel better Lighty.

Welcome back Bullman.

I'm planning to possibly do an EP for someone who may have a valid FE, but now I'm not sure that reason holds up now. It's Mrs. Mott AKA Peyton Flanders from The Hand That Rocks the Cradle for the record.

Planning to see The Gentlemen ("The Gentlemen!") tomorrow night.

As for the FanScription on The Last Jedi, Palpatine has a posthumous action: leaving a recording demanding the destruction of the galaxy in the event he is killed. Kylo nearly follows through with that. That is the extent of the Emperor's role. Very bare bones for its own entry. I know they're different versions, but maybe add it to entry for the Return of the Jedi one (since they're both FS)?

Realised I never did a proper EP for The Escape Artist. I said I would, that was five years ago. Added that to my to do list.

In regards to Slum King (as i finished all of Violence Jack now), here are the pages from final chapter with the reveal about Slum King's true origin and how Satan made him, so that people can judge (quick recap for couple of pages missing, after Satan destroyed all humanity in the finale of original Devilman, angels restore the Earth, but without all life on it, Satan was able to recreate humanity and all life on Earth based on his memories and recreate Akira in the form of Violence Jack himself):
